Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.

(Cheers to that.)

Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.

Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

To The Friends & Neighbors of The Peninsula Golf Club and Local Civic Associations,

As you may be aware, the Town of Oyster Bay is moving forward with its plan to seize the Peninsula Golf Club (PGC) by eminent domain. This plan, which the Town approved in October 2021, has been the subject of local news reports that are not entirely correct and fail to give a complete picture of the proceedings to date.

Despite the Town’s stated reasons for their action, it is hard to imagine any net bene t to the public in seizing a privately-owned golf course that is open to the general public on a non-discriminatory basis, and that is operated at private expense, to make it a publicly-owned golf course that charges higher fees to guests from our neighboring towns and counties and operates at taxpayers expense. The Town has stated that it is acting to ensure that the property remains a golf course and is not developed into residential housing, but the fact is PGC has not offered or solicited offers to sell the club, nor has PGC made any attempt to disturb the restrictive covenant with Nassau County that has been in place for over 75 years. Instead, PGC has operated the club since 1947 as a public golf course in faithful adherence to the covenant, and it rejected the two unsolicited offers to purchase the club made in 2021, including an informal indication of interest by the Town before the eminent domain proceeding began.

As noted in our counsel’s letter, PGC has offered to address the Town’s concerns by granting a “right of rst refusal” that would give the Town the options to match any serious offer to purchase the course before PGC could conclude any sale to a third party. This solution should be more than sufficient to ensure that the Town’s stated concerns are fully addressed without the time and expense of litigation to both parties.

We appreciate your consideration of these points and ask that you reach out to your local Oyster Bay representatives to stop this unnecessary and costly seizure. The main phone number for Oyster Bay is (516) 624-6350.

Very truly yours,

The Board of Directors of the Peninsula Golf Club

How A Company Achieves a 99.6% Customer Satisfaction Rating?

Hard work is the answer to that question.

Most business owners find it challenging to make every customer happy, especially if they service many customers. It takes hard work and a special staff that is committed to achieving these results. The staff must be able to work well together to make sure all customers are taken care of and all issues are resolved. Most problems originate from issues with communication. Whether the communication is between the customer and staff, or managers and the workforce, communication is key in resolving issues quickly & effectively. When customers feel they are getting the runaround, or they find it hard to talk to someone who can help them and answer their questions to resolve their problems, it makes the company as a whole look unorganized and unprofessional. When a company is able to bridge a direct line of communication for the customer with managers, staff, and the workforce it allows the customers to get the answers they require. The key to customer satisfaction success is to provide top-quality products at the best price possible while providing quality service and quick communication for customers. Unifi ed Home Remodeling has been doing this for over 30 years! With over 40 employees, many managers, and an active owner, Unifi ed is able to give customers the experience they need from a company to feel comfortable. Unifi ed has set the standard for customer service in the home remodeling industry for years! If you need to upgrade your home there is only one company to call. For a FREE estimate to upgrade your windows, doors, siding, roofing, or masonry work visit www.UnifiedHomeRemodeling.com or call 888-631-2131, and one of Unifi ed’s Experts will be there to help you.

Bike Safety Poster Contest For

Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announced the return of the Town’s Bike Safety Poster Contest, held throughout National Bicycle Safety Month. The poster contest is open to all 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our children, and many residents have shared their concerns about bicycle safety as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This poster contest was launched to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month

Fifth Graders

this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”

To enter the contest, students must digitally design or draw a picture that illustrates safe bike riding. The poster should include simple language about New York State Guidelines for bike safety, which are available online at https://tinyurl. com/bikesafeny. The top three winning posters will be unveiled to the public during an official meeting of the Oyster Bay Town Board, and featured in a town-wide newsletter. Entries will also be displayed in a “Digital Art Exhibit” on the Town of Oyster Bay’s website.

“This program not only helps fifth graders become more educated on the serious issue of bike safety, it also

helps them learn more about Town government and be recognized in their hometowns,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“Last year’s contest entries were extremely creative and informative, and I look forward to seeing this year’s designs. We encourage all fifth graders to participate!”

Submissions should be made on 18” x 24” size poster paper and emailed to postercontest@ oysterbay-ny.gov. In their submission email, students are asked to please attach a highresolution photo of their poster as a PDF, JPEG, OR PNG file, as well as a completed entry form, which is available online at oysterbaytown. com/bikesafety. The submission deadline is Wednesday, May 31, 2023.

AARP NY Joined By NYS Comptroller DiNapoli, And Rep. D’ Esposito For ‘Fight Fraud Shred It!’ Free Shredding Events

Spring cleaning isn’t complete until you safely shred the proper outdated documents after filing taxes.

AARP New York was joined by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and U.S. Representative Anthony D’ Esposito for a free shredding event today in Garden City, part of a statewide series of free shredding events to prevent scammers from obtaining personal data.

AARP New York is sponsoring 27 “Fight Fraud. Shred It!” events across New York State through Saturday, June 3, 2023, to coincide with people sorting out their finances and clearing old sensitive documents after tax day.

“There’s no better time to take stock of obsolete documents with identifying information and shred them safely. We’re empowering New Yorkers to fight back against fraudsters with these popular shredding events,” said Beth Finkel, AARP New York State Director. “In the New York metro area, there were 202,205 reports of fraud in 2022, according to the Federal Trade Commission. That is not acceptable. Criminals keep getting more and more sophisticated, but we will not back down. AARP is combatting the shame and self-blame game people feel if they fall victim to scams and fraud. A good first step is to shred documents with identifying information.”

“Identity theft is all too prevalent today and can be an enormous source of stress and difficulty for New York’s families. I am pleased to join with AARP and others in spreading the word about the importance of protecting private and sensitive information. Don’t let sensitive documents fall into the wrong hands, shred them!” said New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.

Close to 500 people signed

up for the free shredding event in Garden City.

Crime is innovative and constantly changing. To slow it down, prevention is key. And knowledge gives individuals power over scams. AARP is also providing resources to educate consumers about fraud during the events.

AARP launched the Fraud Watch Network to arm Americans with proven tools to fight back against identity theft and scams. The AARP Fraud Watch Network equips people with reliable, up-to-date insights, and a free Fraud Network Helpline is available to help you and your loved ones.

AARP advocates at the state, federal, and local levels to enact policy changes that protect consumers and enforce laws.

Those attending the shredding events must limit materials to three bags. The events conclude when the two on-site trucks are full. The sites may close early if the trucks fill up. Paper only and no magazines, newspapers, books, or cardboard. The shredding events are being conducted with support from the AARP Fraud Watch Network and the AARP Foundation.

Here’s a spring cleaning checklist from security experts to rid your home of paper with sensitive info:

Old documents: Papers that carry your Social Security number, birthdate, signature, account numbers, passwords or PIN numbers.

Banking: Canceled or unused checks. Shred deposit slips and ATM and credit card receipts

Credit Cards: Preapproved credit card applications and incentive/gift checks from credit card companies.

Medical: Unneeded medical bills.

Investments: Investment account statements.

Obsolete ID cards:

Expired driver’s licenses, medical insurance cards and passports.

More information on how to keep yourself safe from identity theft fraud, and alerts regarding other types of scams, is available from the Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org/ FraudWatchNetwork.

Shredding services are free of charge and open to the public. To find and register for a local shredding event across New York State, visit www.aarp.org/NYStopScams or call 1-866-227-7442.

Shredding services will be performed by a third party. All documents and information provided for shredding are subject to that party’s privacy and informational security policies.

Farmingdale State College Dedicates New Science Lab

Farmingdale State College (FSC) recently dedicated the Murray Pasternack (’60) Lab for Radio Frequency and Microwave Technology, unveiled during a ribboncutting ceremony to also celebrate his $1.4 million gift to FSC, which is also the largest gift made by an individual in the College’s history. Previously he provided two $500,000 gifts to support the launch of an honors program at the College.

The lab will enable students to train using industry-leading equipment including vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, RF signal generators, noise sources, mixed domain oscilloscopes, and more. RF components are the active and passive parts that are used to assemble wireless receivers and transmitters. These components are used in many diverse applications including radio, TV, radar, GPS, cell towers, and medical electronics.

“It was important to me that we build a

lab where we can train the next generation in this technology,” said Pasternack, who is the founder and CEO of Pasternack Enterprises, a world-class supplier of radio frequency and microwave components.

“The need for wireless is growing at a time when the number of engineers is decreasing. I aim to reverse the trend.”

The lab now provides students with upgraded radio frequency and microwave technology equipment and will support new course offerings for the Electrical Engineering Technology Department in the School of Engineering Technology making it a leader in educating the RF engineers.

“Murray’s gift has modernized and expanded a program that addresses the needs of today’s high technology firms, on Long Island and beyond,” said FSC President John S. Nader. “His commitment to creating opportunities for our students is inspiring, and we are grateful for his

generosity.”

Pasternack’s interests include building a pipeline of engineers needed to meet the rapidly growing workforce demands of a dynamic and growing industry including in-demand jobs on Long Island.

“One of the companies I’ve invested in is just down the street from Farmingdale, and we need excellent engineers to succeed, so this is a good arrangement for everyone. Farmingdale educates them in my lab, then we can hire them on after graduation.”

“Like every great engineer and philanthropist, Murray identifies opportunities to “fix things” or make them better and sees giving as a tool to propel the College forward,” said Matthew Colson, Vice President of Development & Alumni Engagement at FSC.

“We are so grateful to have him set an example of how extraordinary philanthropy can improve outcomes for students.

Dalers Go Full STEAM Ahead

Farmingdale School District Hosts Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, And Mathematics (STEAM) Night For Families

Farmingdale’s 5th Annual Elementary STEAM Night, was a fantastic night of hands-on learning. Teachers and student volunteers helped guide families through a funfilled evening celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math in a carnival-like atmosphere filled with games, puzzles, and activities.

“STEAM Night is my

favorite night of the year,” said Director of Science Dr. Kristen Cummings.

“As soon as you arrive, you can feel a positive energy. The most amazing part is that it is a true community effort that brings the entire district together.”

Farmingdale’s Elementary STEAM Night, attended by more than 600 people, had over 100 volunteers manning dozens of engaging stations.

Some of the more popular demonstrations were: A Shocking Development, Make your Flashlight, The Science of the Electric Guitar, Whirly Swirly Pipe Making Sounds, Make Your Ice Cream, Doodle Bots, Slinky Fall, Football Fizzicks, Fold and Fly, Anatomy Assembly, Mini Metric Olympics, Quivervision, Slippery Slime, Penny Boats, and Mix with Minions.

Several Farmingdale High School clubs played a massive part in the night’s success—Robotics, Science Olympiad, Women In STEM, Science Research Club, Real Harmony, Health Science Club, and Theatre students. Teacher volunteers from the district’s six buildings were also on hand to help the event run smoothly.

A big thank you to the Farmingdale Teacher

Center (FTC), who helped support the preparation for the night, and to the Farmingdale Federation of Teachers (FFT) for donating the STEAM Night string bags that were given to all the guests.

An event as grand as STEAM Night doesn’t happen without countless hours of planning and replanning. Farmingdale School District’s Director of Science, Dr. Kristen

Cummings, National Science Honor Society Members, their advisors Sara Whitaker, Mike Boyd, and STEAM Night Coordinators Tatiana Hakimian and Julie Bonventere can rest assured that STEAM Night was a hit with families. The Daler community can not wait for next year’s event!

Hands-On History

Unique Social Studies Workshop Engages Howitt Middle School Students

Students in Mr. Thomas Diorio’s Social Studies class participated in a hands-on art workshop with visiting artist Moriah Ray-Britt and Art Teacher Ms. Audra Donroe. Similar to Ms. Patty Caracappa, Ms. Audra Donroe is a recipient of the 2022 Peace Grant! Her goal for the Grant was to help

create an interdisciplinary art experience for students to apply their knowledge of Social Studies in a new and unique way through printmaking. As a result, students created three large-scale collaborative collages of the branches of government with their classmates aligning perfectly

with the Social Studies curriculum.

The workshop was held over two days, where students learned the art of Gelli Printmaking, made their own papers featuring symbols that represent them, and then worked together to make each branch of government. Each

collage is filled with painted papers made by each student. By doing this, students saw themselves as part of the art-making process, learned a new technique, and worked together to meet a common goal. While creating, students reflected on each branch’s role with Mr. Thomas Diorio, and in order to remember their function (how the Judicial Branch evaluates laws, the Executive Branch carries out laws, and how the Legislative Branch helps make the laws) mixed in corresponding images into the collages.

For example, the Founding Fathers, including George Washington, were added to the Executive Branch’s design so that students recognize where the President resides.

Thanks to the Peace Project Grant, students could create a symbolic representation of the three branches of government that made the content learning relevant to them. The Assistance in Art Education and the US Department of Education funds the grant. Ms. Donroe and Ms. Caracappa, whose

workshop was previously highlighted, were selected to participate in the program’s cohort year. Throughout the year, recipients engage in various professional learning activities that enrich their understanding of using art as an interdisciplinary learning tool to empower student learners. When we correctly promote art as a learning tool, we help students actively make connections between what they are learning and what they may already know.

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”

276

Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.
