Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that seasonal beach parking sticker sales and the free distribution of stickers to senior citizens have begun. The Oyster Bay Town Board has restricted beach access to residents only and enhanced safety measures by installing signage and pedestrian barriers.

Residents are reminded to be safe and cover their face when unable to maintain a social distance.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The summer season is nearly upon us, and many residents are eagerly looking forward to a sun-filled fun day at our beaches. By purchasing a beach sticker in advance, residents can avoid the inevitable lines that often accompany the start of the beach season and spend more time with their feet in the sand instead. We

ask residents to follow the advice of health professionals and keep their family safe by socially distancing from others while at the beach and by utilizing face coverings if you’re unable to keep a safe distance from others.”

Beach parking stickers will be on sale daily from 10am to 2pm, at TOBAY Beach, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Tappen Beach in Glenwood

Neighbor Pets’ Place

Committee (SPECPOL).

SPECPOL is tasked with a wide range of political issues focused on decolonization, peacekeeping efforts, and peaceful outer space uses. This year SPECPOL members will address the following topics: Space Debris and its Danger to International Satellites and Improving and Ensuring the Safety of Atomic Energy Production.

“I represented the Republic of India on SPECPOL, where we discussed nuclear energy and space debris,” said Farmingdale High School student Ramita Chowdhury. This year, I was impressed with how well the discussion flowed and the lack of interruptions.

The moderators were understanding and maintained a calm and fun mood throughout the conference.”

Ehsan Elminabawy was also recognized with an honorable mention for her work on the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC).

DISEC addresses and deals with disarmament issues, challenges to global security, and threats to international peace. This year DISEC members will be addressed the following topic: The Proliferation and Possible Regulations of Private Military Contractors.

“This year, I represented Iraq in the DISEC committee; I was faced with the task of solving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine,” said Farmingdale High School student Ehsan Elminabawy. I managed to work with other countries to combat this issue, and we successfully passed three resolutions. I am excited to see what is in store for next year.”

The Farmingdale High School history club is advised by teachers James Hughes and Jennifer Theo Kupstas.

Its participants include Amanda Treulich, Ramita Chowdhury, Jacquelyne Jeavons, Emily Cohen, Gina Seo, Melissa Treulich, Annabella Barbuto, Waseem Ahmad, Ehsan Elminabawy, Nadiye Pinarli, Ryan Roth, Kevin Piraino, Isabella Mountrichas, Marcin Wasiuta, Lianna Kellndorfer, Anthony Domingo, Sophia Pieri, Janese Williams, Kayla Starke, Alex Alameda, Vanessa Espinosa, Elyssa Kenney, Elvina Tso, and Sara Manandhar.

The Hofstra University Model, United Nations Conference, is a simulation that allows students to come together and discuss international affairs. High school participants hone their debate skills and network among like-minded students.

Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected.

They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations.

Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge.

Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility.

There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering.

Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need.

In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs.

Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Springs Eternal Second Chance Boutique.

This boutique is open to the public MondaySaturday from 11AM-5PM. You can expect to find beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)!

The selfless efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need.

In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed.

The Model United Nations conference’s goal is simple: to garner a greater appreciation for diplomacy and its role in solving many of the world’s most pressing issues. Participating in Model UN can help students develop valuable skills such as teamwork, debating, building consensus, and the art of compromise, all of which are vital life skills that most people do not get a chance to practice very often.

Twenty-four students from Farmingdale High School’s history club participated in the annual Hofstra University Model United Nations conference this year. Two of these students: Ramita Chowdhury and Ehsan Elminabawy, received honorable mention.

The Model United Nations Conference, held virtually this year, kicked off a twoday round of negotiating, drafting, discussions, and research with opening ceremonies on February 27, 2021. This year’s ceremony was a pre-recorded video watched before the start of committee session I. The closing ceremonies after the conference was completed summarized the debates and announced awards.

Town Honors Environmental Poster Contest Winners

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, the Town of Oyster Bay invited 4th and 5th grade students to participate in a poster contest with the theme ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms Our Waterways.’ Appropriately on Earth Day, Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca honored the top three winners of the poster contest, which saw over 750 entries.

“This poster contest was a great way to bring more awareness to a critical issue that we are facing in our environment,” Councilwoman Johnson

said. “These posters not only help inform those who view them, but the students involved can now keep their knowledge with them throughout their lives to help make a difference as they grow up.”

The contest was cosponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay, who also provided prizes to the top three winners.

Winners included: -First place: Elisa Wojnicki, 4th grader from Mrs. Ponzini’s class at Charles Campaign School in Bethpage; -Second place: Kalena Burgos, 5th grader from Mrs. Nuccio’s class at John H West Elementary School in the Plainedge School

District; -Third place: Dimitri Fragopoulos, 4th grader from Mrs. Berzler’s class at Burns Elementary School in Hicksville.

“These organizations help further protect and preserve our environment, and both of these nonprofits have been a huge asset in helping to safeguard our waterways,” said Councilman Imbroto. “I thank all of the 4th and 5th grade students throughout the Town who participated in this contest, and congratulate our winners!”

Students Building Bridges Each year, the Jewish Community Relations Council of Long Island (JCRC-LI) organizes events to commemorate Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Holocaust survivors who share their first-hand accounts of survival are invited to attend along with New York State Senators and New York State Assembly Members. High school students throughout Long Island are also present to receive the “Students Building Bridges Award,” which recognizes their work to create a more civil society. Farmingdale High School senior Shuana Champagnie was the recipient of this prestigious award.

“The Adopt-a-Survivor program afforded my fellow peers and me with the chance to speak with Holocaust survivors and hear their impactful stories,” said Shuana Champagnie. “It was a rare and valuable experience that will remain with me forever.”

Shuana Champagnie has been a member of

the Ambassadors’ Club for three years and has spent countless hours volunteering in Farmingdale’s Adopta-Survivor program sponsored by the JCRC-LI. There, she’s interviewed Holocaust survivors, listened to their stories, and gained perspective on their experiences.

Shuana will now serve as an Ambassador to keep the historical impact of the Holocaust alive.

“After four years of participating in the program, not only did I understand how important it is to learn from the past but how equally important it is to tell future generations about the past,” said Shuana Champagnie. “We can learn how to do better and not repeat those same mistakes.”

Shuana was honored for her efforts in building bridges across communities at Long Island’s Holocaust Remembrance Day virtual program on Thursday, April 15. Shuana received citations from the JCRCLI, NY State Senator Kevin Thomas, and NY State

Assemblyman Steve Stern.

During this program, listeners also heard from survivor Leo Ullman, who shared his remarkable story. Additionally, the JCRC recognized several other incredible students for their work in creating a more civil society.

“I am extremely proud of Shuana for her hard work and dedication to this important cause over the years,” said Farmingdale High School social studies teacher Matt Cillis. “She will now serve as an ambassador for Holocaust survivors to keep their important stories and experiences alive for future generations. Shuana is the embodiment of what it means to be a role model.”

The JCRC-LI, established in 2008, serves as the central coordinating body and resource organization for the Jewish community across Long Island.

It operates as a nexus between community-based organizations, religious institutions, elected and public officials, and the private sector and works to open the lines of communication between these entities.

At a time to be determined, the club will also honor Helen Norjen, who for over 20 years represented the WCF in efforts to limit use of large aircraft at Republic Airfield by attending many meetings and voicing her concerns and then reporting back to the club. In addition, Helen is very involved with supporting the Wounded Warriors Project, honoring these heroes at luncheons and parades.

She proudly supported club members when they presented the WWP with donations of handmade lap blankets. Also honored at this meeting was Loda Romanelli for her milestone 50-year membership in the WCF. In time for Mother’s Day, WCF members donated 38 new and gently used tote bags filled toiletries and personal care supplies for young women and 17 new or gently used tote bags

filled with diapers, lotions, pacifiers, etc. for babies or small children residing at Madonna Heights, a 24-hour care facility that addresses the physical, emotional and social needs unique to women and girls.

The Welfare Committee, chaired by Rosemary Emigholz, also made several donations to local charities during the winter and early spring months.

Beach Parking Sticker Distribution Continued From 6 Landing and at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa. Beginning May 29th, sticker sales will also be available at Philip B. Healey Beach at Florence Avenue in Massapequa, Centre Island Beach, Stehli Beach in Bayville, and at Ransom Beach in Bayville. To purchase a beach parking sticker for your vehicle, residents must present their vehicle registration and bring the vehicle they plan to drive to the beach since parking stickers are placed on the vehicle at the time of purchase. Only residents may purchase beach parking stickers for Town of Oyster Bay beaches. Seasonal parking

stickers are $60, which pay for themselves following three visits.

Free beach parking is offered to Town of Oyster Bay senior citizens aged 60+, the disabled and those on social security disability. To protect your health and safety during this COVID-19 pandemic, senior citizens and the disabled will simply be asked to show their driver’s license and registration from behind the window when visiting the beach for the first time this season.

A parking sticker will then be adhered to the vehicle to ensure continued free access upon future arrival through the established Express Lane. If seniors or those with disabilities choose to visit the beach

in another vehicle, they must simply present their Driver’s License or Beach ID Card from behind the window and will then receive a free day pass. Town of Oyster Bay volunteer firefighters, members of the Armed Forces, veterans and electric port vehicle owners qualify for beach parking passes at reduced rates.

Beaches are staffed with lifeguards and parking attendants on weekends only beginning Saturday, May 29th, and then daily beginning June 25th through Labor Day. Parking stickers will be checked upon entering the venue. For more information, please call (516) 797-4111.
