Nominations are being accepted in three different categories of recognition: Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a veteran), Friend of Veterans Volunteer of the Year (awarded to a non-veteran), and Lifetime Achievement Award (awarded to a veteran or a non-veteran).

a supporting narrative describing the nominee’s on-going veterans related activities, and all nominees must be Town residents.

Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk), is a nonprofit, communitybased organization that was founded in 1967 as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “Great Society” legislation.

EOC of Suffolk promotes self-sufficiency among low-income families and individuals by revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. Formally designated as a “Community Action Agency” by the federal government, it channels block grants from Washington to meet the needs of Long Islanders.

While most of EOC’s work takes place in Suffolk County, the organization also provides a number of its services in Nassau County. Three of its initiatives that take place in both of those counties are: 1) The Housing Counseling program, which helps individuals and families achieve their dream of homeownership.

3) The Chronic Health Care Coordination program, which helps individuals manage their own physical health, mental health and social needs in a comprehensive manner.

Additionally, five of their many programs offered in Suffolk County include: 1) EOC of Suffolk’s Youth and Adolescent Services, which promotes leadership, healthy decision making, sexual health and pregnancy prevention among local youth. The organization’s after-school programs serve more than 1,000 middle school students daily, providing academic and skill-building activities that promote

vocational and educational growth.

2) The Rapid Rehousing Program, which helps individuals and families experiencing homelessness and aims to return them as quickly as possible to permanent housing within their home communities. EOC of Suffolk team members address and troubleshoot barriers to obtaining and maintaining permanent housing.

3) EOC of Suffolk helps keep neighborhood streets safe though its SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) Violence Prevention program, which functions in cooperation with residents, private industry and communitybased organizations. SNUG helps identify and defuse community “hot spots”. It also provides mentorship and leadership-oriented services to youth who are gang members or who are at risk of joining gangs.

4) The organization’s Targeted Prevention and Supportive Service Program supports people living with HIV/ AIDS. Clients are treated with respect, dignity, privacy and trust. Services include transportation, consumer advice, assistance obtaining benefits, linkages to substance abuse and mental health services, legal services, health education and testing.

5) Recognizing the importance of childcare for working families, EOC of Suffolk owns and operates three childcare learning centers: Way to Grow in East Patchogue, Montauk Childcare Center and a childcare center at the Family Court complex in Central Islip. Those facilities meet the highest standards of early childhood education.

Children participate in activities providing intellectual stimulation and fostering self-reliance and social responsibility.

“Many residents have shared their concerns about bike safety here in the Town of Oyster Bay with us, as drivers and youngsters alike are often unsure of safe biking practices,” Supervisor Saladino said. “We launched this poster contest to begin increasing awareness of bike safety guidelines in our community, especially as we celebrate National Bike Month this May and spend more time in the outdoors as summer approaches.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board recently announced that veterans and active United States military personnel are invited to the Town of Oyster Bay’s Armed Forces Appreciation Day Celebration slated for Friday, May 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, located at 7800 Jericho Turnpike in Woodbury. This free event, open to all Town of Oyster Bay residents currently or formerly active, will include a BBQ and entertainment by the singing group American Bombshells.

“The Town of Oyster Bay is committed to serving veterans and ensuring they have access to important benefits in which they are entitled to,” said Supervisor Saladino. “This is an

important way of thanking our brave hometown heroes for protecting the freedoms we enjoy each and every day as Americans.”

President Harry S. Truman established Armed Forces Appreciation Day in 1950 as a day to pay special tribute to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. This single holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

Candlelight Remembrance Vigil

Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd Please join us for a Candlelight Vigil honoring your loved ones at Pinelawn Memorial Park, we understand how difficult and emotional it is for families to lose and grieve loved ones who have passed. Whenever we have a service at Pinelawn, you and your family remain in our thoughts, which is why we would like to offer a way to honor the memory of your loved ones.

We will be holding a candlelight remembrance

vigil where you and a guest can reflect peacefully as your loved one’s name is read aloud amongst the beautiful outdoor setting of our Louis Natalie Mall, surrounded by the gentle sounds of live string music and the soft glow of string lights. The vigil will also include a nondenominational sermon before the reading of names.

Although we know the passing of someone you hold dear is a painful experience for you and your family, we hope

this tranquil evening will be the perfect setting for you to celebrate their memory.

Saturday, May 21st and Sunday, May 22nd Session 1: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm (daylight vigil) Session 2: 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm (nighttime vigil) The vigil will be held over four sessions, two on each day, and tickets are limited to two per loved one. Due to the overwhelming response for this event, we kindly ask that all families respect this

request to enable Pinelawn to support as many families as possible at the vigil. We understand that we cannot accommodate all of the families who have lost loved ones throughout this year and in years passed. However, we offer several remembrance events throughout the year, including our fall Candlelight Remembrance Vigil and our Lantern Lighting Celebration, to ensure more families have the opportunity to honor their loved one’s memory.

If you are interested in attending, please register for the session you wish to attend and add the information of your loved one.

After you register, be sure to review your confirmation email, which contains a link for you to upload a photo of your loved one for the vigil remembrance slideshow that will play throughout the ceremony. **This is an outdoor event - please dress warm. Rain dates TBD**

**Reminder: Cemetery visiting hours close at 4 pm for Mausoleums and 6:30 pm for memorial gardens. Please consider visitation closing times when selecting your vigil session.
