South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree

in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.

ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Runner Jasmine Parreno Lets Nothing Stand In Her Way

Jasmine Parreno was an avid runner, and it was a huge part of her day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this passion of hers came under fire when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. It was in those moments where she truly questioned if she would ever get the chance to run again. Persistent long haulers proceeded to present its symptoms with acute respiratory failure. Still, slowly but surely, she began to recooperate and has since recovered– despite some mild symptoms.

According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

Now Hiring: Summer Jobs Available For Recreation Counselors And Tennis Assistant Positions

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor

Joseph Saladino announced that there are still openings for summer employment in the Town of Oyster Bay. Positions are available for the 2023 Summer Recreation Program, as well as the Youth Tennis Program. Those interested must be 16 years of age or older to apply.

“These great summer jobs are ideal for community teens ages 16 or older who are looking to build their resume,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Our summer recreation counselors and tennis assistants have a lot of fun while receiving hands-on experience and making a difference in the lives of others.”

The Summer Recreation Program runs for six weeks, from July 5th through August 11th. Applicants must be available for the duration of the program. Sessions are Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Program participants take part in trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the TOBAY Games, making being a counselor a great first job for many residents.

Tennis Assistants must be 16+, have at least 1- 2 years of experience participating on a Tennis team, and be available for the duration of the program, which also runs from June 26th until August 11th. Tennis runs Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 3:45 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Farmingdale State College Welcomes New Chief Communications Officer

FARMINGDALE, N.Y.: Farmingdale State College (FSC) President John S. Nader today announced the appointment of Chris Maio as Chief Communications Officer (CCO), effective on April 24, 2023. She joins FSC from Stony Brook University, where she was head of communications and marketing for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

As CCO she will report to the Vice President for Development & Communications and serve as a leading member of the FSC Marketing and Communications (MarComm) team, responsible for integrated communications and brand strategy across all levels of internal and external messaging. In this role, Maio is charged to elevate Farmingdale’s overall reputation and visibility, while developing brand-specific communications among FSC’s audiences and across communications channels.

"I am elated that Chris Maio will lead the College’s marketing and communications efforts. Her experience and record of accomplishment make her the ideal person to help raise the profile and prominence of Farmingdale’s programs and people," said Dr. Nader, President of Farmingdale State College. “Chris really understands our mission and will help build a public appreciation of the College’s leading place in Long Island’s success. An accomplished communicator, Maio is experienced in developing

high-impact brandbuilding programs for higher education, iconic brands and Fortune 500 companies. Specializing in the innovation and STEM fields, she helps organizations share their story through audiencespecific integrated communications, consistent with a unified brand message.

“Chris comes to FSC at a critical time in our history as the school enjoys an incredible trajectory as the fastest growing school in the SUNY System over the course of the last decade,” said Matthew Colson, Vice President for Development and Communications for Farmingdale State College.

Maio spent the last six years at Stony Brook University, leading communications and marketing for the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She built the communications structure from the ground up, establishing and managing the web, content and social media strategies working with the Colleges’ nine departments. She fostered an interdisciplinary approach with medicine, the sciences, humanities and the arts, in collaboration with the university’s umbrella brand. She was also an instructor and student advisor in the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Honors program.

“It’s an exciting time to be joining Farmingdale,

with its unique positioning as the largest technology college in the SUNY system, highly ranked student-centric programs and expanding enrollment and capital improvements,” Maio said. “There’s a great story to tell here, and I’m grateful for this opportunity to partner with President Nader and the FSC community to build on the strong foundation they have worked to establish.”

Prior to Stony Brook, Maio worked in the tech industry, where she developed and launched a major brand campaign for Arrow Electronics, collaborated with industry and government partners on thought leadership programs at NXP Semiconductor, and managed press relations in a post-9/11 environment at Air France. Her earlier experience includes account management roles at public relations agencies, representing major brands and corporations such as Delta Air Lines and the SkyTeam Global Airline Alliance, Visa, Dupont Textiles and Interiors, and multiple consumer products.

Maio received her MS degree in Technology and Society from Stony Brook University, and a BA in Communication Arts from Marist College.
