The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonproﬁt organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modiﬁcations for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneﬁciaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modiﬁcations that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a signiﬁcant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

YMCA’s Youth And Government Mock Legislative Weekend

Farmingdale High School students Evelyn Alarcon, Alyssa Chametzky, Audrey Malanga, Arwa Naveed, and Alexa Pangourelias, accompanied by social studies teachers Ms. Lauren Compitello and Mr. Paul Phelan, attended the YMCA’s Youth and Government Mock Legislative Weekend in Albany from March 24th

to March 26th.

The students had been diligently working on a mock legislative bill. Their bill was an act to mandate mental health counselors in all public schools in New York State. There is currently no law that says that a school must have a social worker or psychologist, so the group wanted to make

sure that every student had the opportunity to speak to a certified mental health counselor during the school day. The group presented their bill to students from across New York State during the legislative weekend, and it was passed by the student legislature.
