Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple.

In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit.

Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help.

Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator!

During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Said Robert Stadelman.” From Mom Erin’s perspective, “Michael learned a whole lot about ventilators, electronic components and a host of other scientific concepts.” Said Erin Stadelman. “It was a great science lesson with a real life application!”

How Earth Day And Environmental Conciousness Have Evolved

Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness.

An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif.

Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon.

But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet.

Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement.

This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.

Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment.

Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools.

Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change.

Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public.

Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce Establishes Dalers for Dalers Fund

Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, like businesssupport organizations everywhere, is doing everything they can to help support local businesses adversely affected by COVID-19. In addition to helping promote their member’s new business models to the community during this crisis and offering them various tools available to them through their membership, the chamber felt the need to funnel some sales to the businesses hardest hit.

As a result, the board of directors has initiated a ‘Dalers for Dalers’ program.

Farmingdale residents have been contributing monetary donations to the chamber’s Daler for Dalers to be used to purchase food from Farmingdale restaurants to be delivered to the homes Farmingdale medical personnel who work in hospitals. Volunteers Needed To Donate Blood Plasma To Help Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19 A Stony Brook Medicine research study is underway to determine if blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 can help treat hospitalized patients with active COVID-19 infection.

Stony Brook is seeking coronavirus survivors to donate blood plasma and researchers are collecting the convalescent serum to use in an experimental treatment strategy in those battling the disease.

Plasma, the liquid portion of the blood, which helps with clotting and supporting immunity, contains antibodies that can potentially be used to kill the virus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) began allowing healthcare providers to request the use of convalescent plasma in patients with serious or immediately life-threatening COVID-19 infections on March 27.

Less than a week later, on April 2, Stony Brook University Hospital received FDA approval to offer the treatment to its patients through a randomized, controlled study (the gold standard in research) and is expected to enroll up to 500 patients from the Long Island area.

The study is led by Elliott Bennett-Guerrero, MD, Medical Director of Perioperative Quality and Patient Safety and Professor and Vice Chair of Clinical Research and Innovation in the Renaissance School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology. To maximize the opportunity of benefit, 80 percent of patients enrolled in the trial will receive the convalescent plasma.

Normally, clinical trials have a 50/50 split; 50% with treatment and 50% in the control group.

“We are fast-tracking this large-scale clinical trial, as every second counts when seeking

lifesaving treatment for these critically ill patients,” said Dr. Bennett-Guerrero.

“The study will assess the safety and efficacy of convalescent plasma versus standard plasma in hospitalized adult patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis.”

Convalescent serum therapy is a century-old treatment that has been used in patients during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1918, the diphtheria epidemic in the U.S. in the 1920s, and more recently, the Ebola outbreak in 2014.

“Transferring this antibody-rich plasma into someone who is still fighting the disease may give that person the immune power to recover from the disease. This is especially important in the first several weeks of infection before one can develop high enough antibody levels to fight the virus.”

“Everyone at Stony Brook is laser focused on identifying every pathway possible to help change the course of this devastating virus,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean, Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “Having a network of physicianscientists in place allows us to contribute on both a local and global scale to accelerate the fight against COVID-19 and save lives.”

Stony Brook Medicine is collaborating with Chembio Diagnostic Systems, a public company based on Long Island.

Javan Esfandiari, Executive Vice President and Chief Science & Technology Officer who says Chembio is pleased that its unique and proprietary Dual Path Platform, referred to as DPP®, to separately and simultaneously detect and measure IgM and IgG antibodies, specifically to

COVID-19, was the assay of choice for Stony Brook.

“Our unique patented technology uses one of our two analyzers (the MR1 and MR2) produced

by Chembio, to read the test results for both IgM and IgG from finger stick blood in 15 minutes and give a numerical result related to the amount of antibody in the sample,” said Esfandiari. “This takes away the individual subjectivity of results and increases the sensitivity and specificity of the test.

Chembio has now received authorization to market and sell the DPP COVID-19 IgM and IgG assay system in the US through the FDA notification process.”

A Journal of the American Medical Association study of the treatment shows promise from a team of Chinese scientists describing the use of convalescent plasma in five patients with COVID-19.

Now, Stony Brook physician-researchers and researchers across the globe are looking to answer the question of whether this therapy can successfully help flatten the curve and save lives sooner than expected.

You do not need to be a Stony Brook University Hospital patient to participate, but you must meet required criteria for plasma donation and have high levels of antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19.

North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

Thirty-four students from the Farmingdale High School chapter of DECA traveled to Rochester recently to compete and take part in leadership workshops at the 2020 DECA State Career Conference.

DECA is a not-for-profit student organization with over 225,000 members in all 50 states and around the world. Their mission is to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges.

They were accompanied

by Farmingdale business education teachers/DECA advisors, Donna Wright and Jonas Viik.

“Students were tested on their knowledge of subject matter and made presentations to industry professionals to

showcase their understanding and insight into a plethora of business specialties,” said Mr. Viik.

“Both the trip to Rochester and the prior regional competition were so much fun,” said student Samantha Mayers. “I wish now that I joined earlier to gain more experience. I will never forget it. We had such a great time.”
