Fans In The Stands Special Olympics Long Island Seeks Volunteers For Spring Games

The Long Island Special Olympics Spring games will take place Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Farmingdale Schools.

Participants will be competing in track & field, swimming, powerlifting, and tennis.

The Farmingdale School district needs volunteers to put on this exciting community event. It’s especially important this year because this is the first time the games have been held since 2019.

“I can’t tell you how exciting it is for our Special Olympics athletes to have Spring Games back on the calendar,” said Stacey Hengsterman, Special Olympics New York president and CEO. “Now, all we need are fans in the stands to cheer

them on! Thank you to the entire Farmingdale School District community for making this signature competition and celebration of inclusion possible.”

Everyone is welcome to volunteer. Kids under 14 can volunteer if accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone.

Children seven years and younger are encouraged to be “Fans in the Stands.”

“We need tremendous community support to help this fantastic event run smoothly,” said Farmingdale Superintendent Paul Defendini. “Volunteers can sign up to escort athletes, retrieve balls, organize heats, and help with awards ceremonies.”

Local business owners and organizations interested in getting involved can host tables in the Olympic Village.

The Olympic Village will serve as a place for athletes to spend time between events, play games, do arts and crafts, and have fun.

The Special Olympics Spring Games are scheduled for May 21, 2022. Opening ceremonies will be held at Howitt Middle School.

After Four Years, The US Navy Blue Angels Return For Long Island’s Greatest Show Bethpage Federal Credit Union And NY State Parks Announce The Bethpage Air Show Performer Line-Up F-22 Raptor; the U.S. Navy F-35C Tac Demonstration Team; the U.S. Coast Guard; and the 106th Rescue Wing NY Air National Guard HC - 130 / HH 60 Demonstration Team.

Civilian performers include the world-famous Skytypers and their flight squadron of five vintage WWII aircraft; Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot; Jessy Panzer, a highly recognized female aerobatic pilot making her second Bethpage Air Show appearance; the American Air Power Museum Warbirds; Long Island’s own David Windmiller; and the SUNY Farmingdale State College Flying Rams, who will fly several of their 22 college-owned aircraft.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame (LIMHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2022 Student Scholarship and “Educator of Note” programs.

This year, LIMHoF will award four $500 scholarships to graduating students.

These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music. Town Launches New ‘Art In The Park’ Initiative Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson invites local artists to participate in the Town’s new ‘Art in the Park’ program, which invites artists and artisans to display and sell their hand-crafted goods. Applications are now available for the event which will be held

on Saturday, May 21st at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park & Beach in Oyster Bay. “We are calling on all local artists and artisans to fill out an application today to take part in this great opportunity to showcase their items,” said Councilwoman Johnson. “The free event

on May 21st will also feature live music, food trucks and activities for kids, making it a fun day for the whole family.”

Participants must be 18 or older, and display and sell only their original pieces. No commercial or mass-produced items are permitted. Artists must supply their own 10x10

canopy and additional items required for their space. Additional details and associated costs are provided on the application, available on the Town’s website.

Art in the Park is run by the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

The program focuses on hand-crafted goods, including ceramics, watercolors, glass, jewelry, wood, leather, sculpture and more.

Long Island’s Largest Car Show On April 30th At Tobay Beach Long Island’s premier car show experience will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2022 from 11am to 4pm at TOBAY Beach (rain date May 1st). The Supervisor’s TOBAY Beach Classic will be co-sponsored by Car Show Long Island and will feature hundreds of automobiles, trucks, military vehicles, and emergency service vehicles. A live concert performed by That 70’s Band will take place during the day, followed by trophy presentations.

College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or

environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy are eligible for the $1,000 scholarship.
