Dalers Band Together Farmingdale High School Musicans Attend NYSBDA

A record seven Farmingdale High School band students participated in the New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA) Symposium in Syracuse, NY in early March.

Registration Now Open For Toddler Sports Program

Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Toddler Sports Program returns this spring on April 18th. This 6-week program offers sports classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center for children ages 3 and 4.

“The Town’s Toddler Sports Program is a fantastic way to teach your toddler the fundamentals of sports in a fun and social environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “This program is sure to be a hit with children and parents alike, as youngsters are given the opportunity to learn the basics of various different sports such as tee-ball, flag football and more along with children their own age.”

Residents who sign their toddler up for the program must choose one class per week, per child. Classes will take place on: Tuesdays at 1pm or 2pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center; and Thursdays at 1pm or 2pm

Online registration is now available at www. oysterbaytown.com/ parksportal. Space is limited- first come, first serve. Registration will close when the program reaches full capacity.

Each class is approximately 50 minutes. The cost of the program is $75 per child who is a Town resident, and $90 per child whose care giver is a Town resident but not the child.

The child’s birth certificate and a tax or utility bill will be required to validate age and proof of residency. A guardian must be present during the class. The child MUST be 3 years old by the start of the program.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

Free Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup & Marine Education Expo

Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier invite residents to participate in an Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup and Marine Education Expo, scheduled for Saturday, April 15th (rain date April 16th) at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Bay, the day offers volunteers – individuals, families, companies and organizations – an opportunity to give back to the environment by removing litter from the shoreline and below. The Marine Education Expo features environmentalists and marine educators offering information on local wildlife, including encounters with some animal ambassadors, interesting ecosystem restoration projects, solutions to help tackle marine pollution, a marine vessel restoration project and boat yard tour, and

family fun activities. $20,000 grant applications will be available to homeowners and small businesses looking to upgrade their septic system to new clean water systems.

“This is a great opportunity to roll up your sleeves, giveback to Mother Earth, and have fun while learning more about our local marine life and environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “ This year’s cleanup also features an underwater dive to the harbor’s bottom! A group of local divers will enhance our debris collection efforts by removing trash that has already traveled into the water.”

Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue in Oyster Bay. Additional locations for

the clean-up include Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Certificates are available upon request for students seeking to fulfill volunteer requirements. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach clean-up events have resulted in 40,000lbs of debris being collected by volunteers and town workers.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “From wildlife encounters to boat restoration and fun activities, this Harbor Cleanup and Marine Education Expo offers a great and free day out for the family. I hope to see you at the Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup & Marine Education Expo on April 15th.”

Environmental Volunteer Opportunity For Students, Groups & Individuals

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Laura Maier announce a new opportunity for residents interested in helping protect the environment and keep waterways clean. The Town recently joined with local environmental groups to unveil new floating litter trap technology – known as Collec’Thor – at Tappen Marina, and is seeking volunteers to assist in the equipment’s operation this spring and summer.

“These Collec’Thors, which were among the first of their kind to be installed in the United States and the first in New York State, assist in our ongoing commitment to protect our ecosystem and improve water quality by removing debris,” said Supervisor Saladino. “We thank all of the local environmental organizations who assisted the Town in deploying this environmental technology, which collects up to 220 pounds of floating debris in just one cycle.”

The Collec’Thor is a silent, motorized waste collector which attracts and engulfs all solid or liquid waste floating on the water surface. The Collec’Thor project has been a collaborative effort between the Town and the Cornell Cooperative Extension

of Suffolk County (CCE) Marine Program, as well as local environmental groups whose shared mission is to protect waterways. This year, when the Collec’Thor returns to local north shore waterways in April, CCE is seeking assistance from local volunteers looking to get involved in helping their environment.

“This is a great opportunity for high school and college students – as well as adults – to give back to our environment and serve as ‘Citizen Scientists’ in the collection of data,” said Councilwoman Maier.

“There are also potential science projects, internships and analysis opportunities, as well as educational field trip opportunities, related to the Collec’Thor and how to protect from marine pollution.”

Specifically, CCE is conducting a study to measure how much debris is gathered by the Collec’Thor and determine what specific trash is found floating in the marina. All volunteers will receive a certificate acknowledging their efforts in making a difference in their community and protecting the environment. The Town currently has two Collec’Thor traps which are installed at Harry Tappen Marina in Glenwood

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one

of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the

reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one. High School. Collec’Thors, the latest in marine debris collection technology, have been deemed the most efficient trash skimmers available for marine and coastal usage. They are specifically designed to target solid and liquid waste, including plastic bottles, cigarette filters, butts and packaging, microplastics and hydrocarbons. The technology uses a small pump to draw in surrounding water and skims any floating trash into its receptacle. The

mechanism adjusts with the tide and is easily affixed to a floating dock or waterfront location. Anyone interested in volunteer opportunities related to the Collec’Thor
