Students, Pre-K through Grade 12, are encouraged to celebrate ARTS MONTH ON LONG ISLAND by participating in the Arts Alive LI 2015 Poster Contest.

The contest, which runs from March 20th to May 22nd, 2015, represents a unique opportunity for students to become involved with the premier regional celebration of the arts on Long Island, win prizes and see their winning entries in an art exhibit at Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City, NY. The Grand Prize $300 Gift Certificate. $50 Gift Certificates will also be awarded to First Prize winners in each of three (3) categories including: Pre-K-Grade 5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. A Second and Third Runner up will be selected and awarded with a Certificate of Participation.

Winning posters will become part of the 2015 Arts Alive LI Commemorative Poster Series and will be on exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum in October. “It is our hope that many of our region’s

talented student artists will view this as an opportunity to participate in Arts Month and be featured in their first museum exhibition,” said Theresa Statz-Smith, Executive Director, Long Island Arts Alliance.

“Since the submissions will be done digitally on our website, ArtsAliveLI. org, it is best suited to those who draw, paint, and specialize in graphic art or photography.” In 2014, Long Island Children’s Museum reported 15,200 visitors and they are happy to host the exhibit again in 2015.

Long Island Children’s Museum President Suzanne LeBlanc announced news of the art exhibit at the Museum featuring the winning selections. “At the Children’s Museum we believe that there is a vital need for public spaces to exhibit the creative works of our neighbors.

Exhibiting the artwork of our community’s children is one way to encourage them to value and participate in the visual arts and develop the next generation of audiences

for galleries and museums across Long Island. Seeing their contemporaries’ artwork on display will serve as inspiration to all our visitors to keep the “arts alive.”

Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign.

Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat.

Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing.

The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious.

Who knew fish had teeth!

Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course.

That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta.

Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond.

Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

At the meeting, Mr. Defendini offered residents a detailed explanation of the various reserve funds the District has established as part of its forwardlooking mindset to offset the year-to-year fluctuation of government funding and unanticipated expenses. As part of the proposed 20152016 budget, the District suggests establishing a new capital reserve fund to efficiently fund capital improvement projects and upgrades to District facilities. This fund would be created by combining the remainders of existing reserve funds and would not require an increase to the tax levy. Establishing the capital reserve fund will be listed as “Proposition #2” in the proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year.

“All of the District’s proposed budgets are based on careful analysis of state- and- county- wide trends, and preparation

for what is to come.” The reserve funds and the District’s fund balance flexibility help the District safeguard for potential gaps in funding and ensure potential deficits have little-to-no impact on District programs,” continued Mr. Defendini.

The Farmingdale School District’s proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year stays within the District’s specific tax levy cap of 1.28 percent based on the formula provided by New York State.

The Farmingdale School District is scheduled to adopt the proposed 20152016 school year budget for voter approval at the next Board of Education regular meeting on Wednesday, April 15th at Howitt Middle School.

The District reminds residents to vote on the 2015-2016 proposed budget on Tuesday, May 19th, 2015 at the Howitt Middle School gymnasium from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Ms. Karen Wiking of Farmingdale has been awarded the Town of Oyster Bay’s prestigious Humanitarian Woman of Distinction Award.

The ceremony at town hall was presided over

by Supervisor Venditto on Tuesday March 24th.

Ms. Wiking was cited for

her work as Director of Christian Education at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Farmingdale, her role as mentor for the children of the parish, leader of its large women’s group and her many humanitarian efforts.

She has arranged scholarships for girls in

Africa, supports a shelter for abused women and children on Long Island, given support to Victims of Hurricane Sandy and runs a Christmas program for children in need. Her good humor, amazing spirit and unflagging energy make her a role model for the next generation of women.

Jonathan Mosenson has been presented The Long Island Family and Consumer Science (LIFACS) Professionals’ Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Mosenson teaches at the Plainedge Middle School.

During the awards breakfast held at Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center in Riverhead on March 20th, he said, “It is a pleasure serving the LIFACS

organization in helping further the awareness and the importance of what we teach in our classrooms.

We offer students the ability to take what they learn in all their classes and apply them to real world situations.”

LIFACS is a subchapter of the New York State association.

It supports teachers in the classroom and helps to keep the content area alive.

Workshops and conferences are provided

to support teachers with new ways to enhance and enrich real-life experiences for students.

Teachers use the STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It is the only professional association dedicated to teaching family and consumer science to students from multiple practice settings and content areas.

Long Island Cares Honored Long Island Cares Inc./The Harry Chapin Food Bank was honored by more than 400 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters this month.

Long Island Cares is one of 13 honorees to receive the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential.

These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring

The Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

Long Island Cares’ Mobile Outreach Resource Services (MORE) provides emergency food to people when and where they need it. The food bank’s groundbreaking MORE Van is a uniquely customized, fully-

equipped, mobile food pantry. A small fleet of these vans travels regularly into local communities, each stocked with 500 pounds of food. The organization provides vital nutritional programs for children, as well as hunger education, vocational training and job development, and legislative advocacy. It also sponsors innovative, direct service programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency.

On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle.

The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations that support residentcentered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs.

Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.”

During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials.

After the keynote, guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan.

The conference was hosted by the Lillian & Mark Lane Alzheimer’s Disease Education Center®.

Thirteen of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters were honored with the 2015 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s ninth annual gala this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals and organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County.

A strategic education partner with school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the awards program to recognize those who share its mission of ensuring a successful, challenging, caring and safe environment that enables students of all ages and abilities to achieve their maximum potential. These outstanding individuals and organizations have made strides to accomplishing key educational goals embraced by Nassau BOCES, such as ensuring student success.

The annual awards gala is held by the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation as a way of celebrating those who have made significant strides in supporting and improving education on Long Island.

The Foundation is an independent nonprofit organization that raises funds for innovative educational programs that fall outside of the agency’s budget.

“It gives me great pleasure to express my gratitude to our Education Partner honorees,” said Nassau BOCES Board President Eric Schultz. “They are all extraordinary, sharing our commitment to creating safe and caring educational environments where all students can achieve their greatest potential. I want to

personally thank you for your support of our students and programs.”

Committing Resources Stony Brook University is the first higher education institution committed to providing cancer researchers as mentors to high school students under a program run by “Stand Up To Cancer” (SU2C) and PBS LearningMedia.

Called the EMPEROR Science Award Program, the education initiative encourages students from economically disadvantaged high schools to pursue careers in science, with a particular emphasis on

cancer research through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry.

Known as an institution that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to conduct research, Stony Brook University is also a national leader in providing research mentoring programs and opportunities for qualified high school students in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)

disciplines. As part of the EMPEROR Science Award Program, researchers from the Stony Brook University Cancer Center will mentor qualifying students.

According to SU2C, applications will be available in August 2015 for the program on PBS LearningMedia’s website and on the SU2C website. Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 Awardees, high school students from Title I, or

similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools, who will receive one-onone science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule, as well as $1,500 grants, will be announced in late 2015. Students will be connected with science mentors from a host of high-profile medical research centers, from among more than 100 SU2C-affiliated institutions as well as universities and industry leaders in cancer diagnosis

and treatment.

The education initiative was announced on March 24th in connection with “Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The EMPEROR of All Maladies,” a film by Barak Goodman which will air on PBS as a three-part series on Monday, March 30, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st.

“The need to increase cancer research to discover cures for many forms of cancer remains a top priority nationally, and this program will provide a

pipeline to mentor a new generation of budding cancer researchers,” said Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine.

“We are thrilled to be the first Cancer Center to support this educational initiative and believe our research faculty will be ideal mentors for the selected students.”

he American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to make a difference in the lives of patients this spring by giving blood.

Donated blood is perishable and must be constantly replenished to keep up with the demand.

Red blood cells, with a shelf life of only 42 days, are the most frequently transfused blood component, and are always needed by hospitals.

Eligible donors can give red cells through either a regular whole blood donation or a double red cell donation, where available. Double red cell

donations yield twice the usual amount of red cells in a single appointment and are accepted at select donation locations. Double red cell donors must meet additional eligibility criteria, which will be determined at the donation appointment.

Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, A negative and B negative. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days, and double red cells may be donated every 112 days, up to three times per year.
