Weldon E. Howitt Middle School took part in the Sandy Hook Promise Say Something Call to Action week. The week’s activities were organized by the Building Safety Committee and Building Wellness Committee.

Sandy Hook Promise is a national nonprofit

organization founded and led by several family members whose loved ones were killed during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting on December 14, 2012. The mission of the weeklong initiative is to teach students how to look for warning signs—especially

on social media— of an individual who may be a threat to themselves or others and to say something to a trusted adult to get help.

“We want to continually remind our students that Dalers protect Dalers by saying something,” said Principal Luis Pena. “If a

student is—or knows of another student—going through a tough time, we want them to know that the faculty and staff are here for them and will do everything in their power to support them through whatever it is.”

To show support for school safety, students, faculty, staff, and parents were invited to purchase and wear a Sandy Hook Promise Pin and wear “as much green as they could” on Friday, March 1st.

Green necklaces were also sold during lunch periods for 25 cents. The money raised will go towards funding similar initiatives in the future.

All students were invited to sign the Say Something Promise Banner hung in the cafeteria. April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.

In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for!

If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members, Boat Captains, Boat Maintence and Repair, Office Assistants, Building and Grounds Maintenance and Repair and Festival Booth Volunteers.

Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more.

They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years!
