Farmingdale High School ninth-grader Chris Ruotolo participated in the New York State Band Directors Association’s (NYSBDA) symposium in early March.

NYSBDA is the premier educational organization for band directors in New York.

Ruotolo, a trombone player, was nominated to play with the High School Honor Band in this symposium by high school music teacher Mr. David Abrams.

Chris Ruotolo was handpicked among hundreds of applicants from all grades across New York. Musicians selected to appear engaged in several rehearsals and attended leadership and musicality seminars. Families across Long Island cannot wait for the All Kids Fair’s first in-person event since before Covid-19.

The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury.

Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them.

There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced the return of internship opportunities for college students who are looking to gain meaningful work experience through an internship program being offered by the Town for the 2022 summer season.

“Internship give students an advantage over other job seekers when it comes to work readiness, and I am proud that the Town will once again provide that opportunity for our residents,” Supervisor Saladino said. “This internship program provides an invaluable opportunity for students to receive mentorship

and supervision from experienced government professionals.”

This federallyfunded program compensates students at a rate of $18 an hour for work completed within various Town departments. Students will work 19.5 hours per week. The program will operate June 2nd through August 10th. Funds have been granted to the Town by the Oyster Bay-North Hempstead-Glen Cove Workforce Development Board. This internship program offers college students the ability to gain worksite specific knowledge, learn departmental procedures, assist with

general office duties and reports, develop an understanding of worksite specific projects and apply the knowledge gained to benefit the Town of Oyster Bay. College students interested in internship opportunities must apply by April 15th.

services to teens and their families at the beginning stages of their alcohol or drug experimentation or abuse. Psychoeducation and skill building is offered through individual, family and group services which aim to prevent the devastating, lifelong effects of addiction.

The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and significant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery.

Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges.

In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the 29th annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont Lake State Park will be held Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 12:00pm-2:00pm.

There is no rain date for this event.

The egg hunts will take place on the open field and will begin at 12:15pm.

Additional hunts will occur at 15-minute intervals with the last one at 1:45pm.

The hunts will be divided into three age categories: ages 4 & under; ages 5 & 6 and ages 7-9. There is a 3-egg limit per child per hunt to ensure everyone goes home with a special treat. Please bring a small bag or basket for your child to put their eggs in.

In addition to the egg hunt, there will be food vendors and free children’s activities including a petting zoo, pony rides, educational display by the Environmental Department, funny photos, and an inflatable bounce (weather permitting). You can also visit and take pictures with the Spring Bunny.

This event is cosponsored by radio stations WBAB (102.3FM) and WBLI (106.1FM), Royal Events, NY Life, College Hunks, Ghost Busters, Long Island Suffolk Center for Speech, Catholic Health, and the Natural Heritage Trust.

Pompous businessman Joseph Pulitzer, concerned solely with the bottom line, was performed by Nicholas Suwalski, and Medda Larkin, the saloon singer who offers her theater as a safe haven for the newsies, played by Sofia Grago.

Rounding out the cast was Ash Pinna (Race), Sarah Aliendro (Albert/ Tommy Boy), Ella Smith (Specs/Buttons), George Grigorov (Henry/ JoJo), Jesse Arcuri (Finch), Mia Andriopoulos (Elmer/ Mush), Jacob Gruda (Oscar Delancey), Brody Healey (Morris Delancey), Lincoln Keena (Wiesel/Mr. Jacobi/ Roosevelt), Shannon Tower (Bunsen/Seitz), Ava Guzman (Hannah), Wyatt Smith (Nunzio/Mayor), and Zaria Canizares

“Each year, I’m amazed at how the community and school come together to support the students involved in the musical production,” said director Jen Klock. “This year is no exception.”

Orchestrating a middle school musical is no easy task. Many people behind the scenes are responsible for a show’s production.

Howitt’s Newsies was a success due to its direction

by Jen Klock. Eric Hulse and Joseph Franzino led vocal direction, Erin Laibach oversaw the musical’s choreography, and Raniyah Elguerouat acted as production stage manager. In addition, students from Farmingdale High School and Howitt Middle School worked backstage to make the moments on stage run flawlessly. Congratulations to all the crew members who work hard and are never seen in front of the curtain.

This school year has had its challenges, but once again, Dalers rise to the occasion put on a fantastic performance, and show everyone “Howitts Done.”

The Howitt Middle School Players proudly presented their rendition of Newsies the weekend of March 11th.

The music, choreography, acting, sets, scenery, and technical elements of the production were top-notch due to the dedication and passion of Farmingdale staff members and students.

“I am so excited to be directing one of my favorite shows of all time,” said director Jen Klock. “Newsies has it all: inspiring anthems, acrobatic dances, and most importantly, a powerful message that kids can accomplish anything if they stand together.”

William Herbert starred as Jack Kelly, the charismatic leader of the Manhattan newsies, an orphaned dreamer and artist who yearns to get out of the crowded streets of New York. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if possible.

Children’s activities include the “Spring Fling” casting contest, as well as hands-on educational displays by DEC’s Education Unit.

Spring Family Fishing Festival Continued From 18 DEC will also stock Upper Twin Pond in Wantagh, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, and Massapequa Creek and Reservoir, along with 14 other Long Island lakes with trout before April 1, providing excellent prospects for spring fishing. In total, DEC’s spring stocking program, conducted by regional freshwater fisheries staff, staff from DEC’s Catskill Fish Hatchery,

and volunteers, will place 20,000 brown trout and rainbow trout in ponds and streams in Nassau and Suffolk counties. A complete list of DEC fish stocking can be found on DEC’s website.

Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is yearround for most lakes and streams. There is a daily limit of three fish per person. Spring trout stocking begins in mid-March and will be

Women’s Club Of Farmingdale Supports Ukraine Donations

At the WCF March meeting, members voiced their concern for the people of Ukraine and asked how the club could come together to help the refugees. The response was immediate and very generous and a committee was set up to collect monetary donations and gently used clothing. Members quickly dropped off essential items to President Tina Diamond’s home. Items included jeans, jackets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, sneakers, boots, blankets, medical supplies and non-perishable food items.

With the help of club volunteers, Tina and her group delivered these donations on Sunday, March 6, to the Holy Family Ukrainian Catholic Church in Lindenhurst which was holding a Donation Drive for Refugees. It was amazing to see the number of people stopping by and the amount of supplies donated.

At the club’s February meeting, speaker Bridget Mantello from The Safe Center, L.I. discussed the programs and services within the center. Club members purchased zippered tote bags to include her list of much needed items so that her clients can have a safe storage bag of their own. Restoring hope for victims of abuse, The Safe Center LI is a qualified IRS 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that actively seeks the support of individuals, philanthropies’, corporations, and foundations in its efforts to provide the best services for the women, children, men and elderly persons it serves.

The GFWC (General Federation of Women’s Clubs) Island Metro District Cultural Arts competition was held on March 7. Students from Farmingdale High School submitted their arts and crafts in the competition, as well as many clubwomen.
