Birthday Box Donations

armingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School students in Ms. Gatti’s and Mr. Marzillier’s 6th grade classes recently collected donations for Birthday Boxes for disadvantaged children in Nassau County. Each box contained donated, unused items such as cake mix, frosting, candles, decorations, balloons, stickers and games.

Inspiration for the project came from two sisters, Alyssa and Kim Fields.

It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect.

I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. We remember to reflect are we reminded those times of our lives fondness, knowing how lucky we are to have such with a close-knit network of people that, one day, these very supporting us. The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center is currently offering early bird registration for the Town’s Summer Hockey School program, developed by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage.

Hockey enthusiasts can sign up for any number of weekly sessions at discounted prices now through April 1st, 2016, from one week to all eight weeks of the program.

The Town’s Summer Hockey School offers hockey players a great opportunity to develop and learn new hockey skills in week-long sessions carefully tailored to match their talent level. The Rinx Summer Hockey School is an excellent way for kids to spend the summer so parents may wish to take advantage of the early bird registration, not only to develop their children’s hockey skills but for the fun summer experience

that comes with it.

The program, which is slated to begin Monday, June 27th and run through Friday, August 19th, will include a full day of on-ice and off-ice training run by trained hockey professionals.

Throughout the week, participants will receive the benefit of 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of office training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced.

The intermediate skills program is for ages 5 through 12 and will include 15 hours of onice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink.

The advanced session is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14 and includes 20 hours of onice training and 6 hours of training per week off the ice. Both skill programs focus on shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. Lunch every day is included.

The Summer Hockey School sessions will be challenging, but will result in newly developed skills for our young hockey players. Each class will be filled with useful tips and techniques to fully develop each student’s hockey playing abilities.

I encourage parents to register their children for this excellent program which provides a quality hockey experience with all the fun that comes from playing this great sport. “Since 1989, the Dune Stabilization Project has been an immensely popular volunteer activity for residents of all ages,” Supervisor Venditto said.

VILLAGE PARADE - The Village of Farmingdale’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade was recently held at Northside Elementary School in Farmingdale. The parade was assembled by the men and women of the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, bringing the community together in celebration of Ireland’s rich heritage and culture.

BIRTHDAY BOXES - Farmingdale School District’s Howitt Middle School students in Ms. Gatti’s and Mr. Marzillier’s 6th grade classes recently collected donations for ‘Birthday Boxes’ for disadvantaged children in Nassau County. Each box contained donated, unused items such as cake mix, frosting, candles, decorations, balloons and miscellaneous small gifts including stickers and games. Inspiration for the project came from two students, sisters Alyssa and Kim Fields, who shared the idea and their enthusiasm with their classmates. Both 6th grade classes collected donations and sorted the assembled goods into 16 uniquely personalized boxes.

Spring Computer Classes Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes that will be held this April at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville.

The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. to seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program and begin on Tuesday, April 5th.

The Town is pleased to continue our partnership with EAC and offer these classes to seniors to

help improve their basic computer skills. No prior experience with computers is necessary to take part in these helpful classes that will provide you with information on how to get the most out of your iPad or Tablet. Keeping up to date with modern technology will open up new experiences each and every day. Enrolling in these SeniorNet classes will enable you to learn how to send emails to your grandchildren, shop online and even chat with old friends in other states that

you may have lost touch with.

These classes are taught by volunteer instructors and coaches, who strive to make learning fun and simple to help seniors adjust to the ever changing world of technology.
