According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of
12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Town Launches Pet Food
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Tom Hand announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will once again host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with Long Island Cares. The drive will to March 31st with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets.
Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.
“Unfortunately, many pets are oftentimes placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary
food and supplies,” said Supervisor Saladino. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”
The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.
“These pet food and supply donation drives can help countless animals stay at home with their loved ones,” said Councilman
Hand. “The Town is proud to once again partner with Long Island Cares for this important cause.”
Those interested in supporting the Town’s Pet Food & Supply Drive can place donated items in drop-off boxes located at both Town Hall offices, including Town Hall North at 54 Audrey Avenue in Oyster Bay, and Town Hall South at 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa, during regular business hours.
Town Hall locations are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information, visit www. licares.org or call the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 624-6380.
Town Yard Waste Collection Resumes April 1st
Residents Receiving Town Service Should Place Yard Waste Curbside With Recycling
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola announced that Yard Waste collection will resume the week of Monday, April 1st, for homeowners who receive Town collection services. Yard waste is picked up on the same day as recycled materials, including plastics, metals, glass and cardboard.
“With the spring season upon us, many residents will begin clearing their properties from leaves and other debris left behind by winter,” said Councilman Labriola. “Yard waste collection, which includes lawn clippings, will get underway the first week of
April and run throughout the year.”
Residents should place yard waste curbside on their same day as their recycling items. Yard waste is collected by Town sanitation crews and taken to compost facilities. Waste includes grass clippings, weeds, leaves, tree trimmings, hedge and shrub clippings and other garden/yard waste. Materials should be placed in bags at the curb, and should weigh no more than 50 pounds. No household garbage, refuse or animal waste should be disposed with yard waste.
“Collecting Yard Waste is an important
component to our recycling program,” said Councilman Labriola.
“One of the prime benefits of recycling yard waste is that the cost to take these materials to a compost facility is less than the cost to dispose of them at an out-of-state landfill. This successful program is another example of the Town’s commitment to providing high quality environmental services while protecting our taxpayers’ wallets.”
For more information on the Town’s sanitation services, including recycling and yard waste, visit www.oysterbaytown. com.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church Fellowship Café
Recipient Of Women’s Club Of Farmingdale Donation
On Saturday, February 24, 2024, Welfare Chair Rosemary Emigholz met with Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) members to donate $50 to St. Thomas Episcopal Church Fellowship Café. Present were Maria Ortolani, Judy Vilas Rosemary Emigholz, Babara Hoerner, St. Thomas Volunteer, Lynda Leone, Linda Kreussling, and Anna Ievolo. The Café was started by Janice Anderson and Kelly Meyer. They have very dedicated volunteers, parishioners and the Handicapped Encounter
Christ group. They strive to offer a friendly and safe environment for guests by having meetings with guests about rules that they then decide on. A special thanks goes out to the HEC Group for their invaluable help in keeping the cafe going, as well as to our local restaurants for their generous donations including Vespa Italian Kitchen which sends several trays of Italian food and McDonalds donates gift cards which are raffled off to our guests.
Dressed in red for Valentine’s Day, members
of the WCF celebrated their February meeting on February 1, 2024 at the Community Room at Allen Park. The room was beautifully decorated in preparation for serving a delicious lunch. Thank you to Luncheon Chair Lynda Leone and her committee Therese Rudden, Debbie Podolski, Annamaria Villani and Angelina Dunlop. The members enjoyed a special program from St. Joseph’s Hospital Wound Center. Two speakers, Kathleen Kennedy, VP and Liz Schwind enlightened members on the Wound
Care Center located on the grounds of this hospital. The ladies were very impressed with the information presented. The official name of the center is The Center for Hyperbaric Medicine & Wound Healing which offers comprehensive care at one convenient location for patients who have chronic or complex wounds. Wounds that won’t heal can be concerning and frustrating, including diabetic foot ulcers, nonpressure wounds and surgical wounds.
On Valentine’s Day,
The Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF) was graciously invited to attend a club meeting by Massapequa Women’s Club. A very warm welcome was extended to WCF President Barbara Hoerner by Massapequa President Fran Cloud. Discussions and conversations centered around sharing thoughts and ideas about how the two clubs can support each other as they continue with their many philanthropic efforts. Many of Massapequa’s programs center around the welfare of children
and local community projects, including food drives to help replenish local pantries. WCF President Barbara Hoerner shared some of the WCF projects including support for Operation Smile and Beads of Courage. Past president Tina Diamond described the club’s newest project – “Shut the Door on Hunger” which addresses food insecurity for students when schools are closed throughout the school year and during the summer.

Easter Sunday Mass Celebrations
Celebrations of Easter Sunday Mass are known for their joyous nature regardless of where Christians happen to be. But few, if any, celebrations of Mass can match the scope of the celebration in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the public celebration to be canceled in 2020 and
2021, but it returned in 2022. A sizable number of celebrants returned along with it, as estimates suggested around 50,000 people were on hand to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on the plaza directly in front of St. Peter’s Basilica on April 17, 2022. Pope Francis led the Mass, which was concelebrated with 280 priests, 25 bishops and
23 cardinals. But the crowd attending Mass was just the beginning, as Pope Francis later delivered his Urbi et Orbi benediction, a papal address and apostolic blessing the pope delivers on solemn occasions, from the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica before an estimated crowd of 100,000.

Enjoy A No-Bake Dessert This Easter Sunday
Easter eggs in all their pastel glory come to mind when pondering an important holy day on the Christian calendar. Easter eggs are great to hide and fun to find, but when they come in the form of a tasty dessert, celebrations become that much more festive.
“No-Bake Cheesecake Eggs” are a confectionary twist on the chocolate eggs that are popular come Easter. Home chefs can have fun decorating and playing with the flavors of these treats. Try this recipe, courtesy of “Jane’s Patisserie Celebrate!” (Sourcebooks) by Jane Dunn.
No-Bake Cheesecake Eggs
Serves 2
Base
1 medium chocolate Easter egg
35 grams unsalted butter
75 grams digestive biscuits
Filling
200 grams full-fat soft cheese (such as cream cheese or neufchâtel), at room temperature
1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoons icing sugar
100 milliliters double cream
25 grams cocoa powder
Decoration
50 grams milk chocolate, melted Easter chocolates Sprinkles
Directions
Base
Carefully split the Easter egg into two halves.
Melt the butter in the microwave in short bursts or in a small pan over a medium heat. In a food processor, blitz the biscuits to a fine crumb, add the melted butter and pulse a few times until the mixture is well combined.
Divide the mixture equally between the two halves of the Easter egg, and very gently press down, without breaking the shell.
Filling
In a large bowl, whisk the cheese, vanilla extract and icing sugar until smooth. Add the double cream and cocoa powder and whisk again until smooth and thickened. Divide the mixture evenly between the two Easter egg halves and smooth over as carefully as possible. Chill in the fridge for an hour or so until set.
Decoration
Drizzle the melted milk chocolate over the two halves and decorate with some Easter chocolates and sprinkles. Editor’s note: Icing sugar also is known as confectioner’s sugar or powdered sugar. In the United States and Canada, “double cream” may not be readily available. Double cream has a higher butterfat content and is primarily sold in the UK. If double cream is not available, try substituting with heavy cream with the highest fat content you can find, but note that the consistency of the finished product may be slightly different.
