STUDENTS HONORED FOR LIFE SAVING EFFORTS - Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board recently honored two heroic students of Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale for performing the Heimlich Maneuver on classmates who were choking during lunch. Daniel Kelly and Mackenzie Anderson responded in two separate incidences to save the lives of fellow classmates. For their life-saving action, Daniel and Mackenzie were honored at a Town Board meeting while joined by their Assistant Principal Cheryl DePierro. Supervisor Saladino thanked the students and their Assistant Principal, and presented them with Town Citations.

Maier Urges Residents To Donate Blood As National Shortage Impacts Hospitals

Residents Encouraged To Donate Blood On March 28th At Hicksville Athletic Center

With hospitals facing a nationwide blood shortage, Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites residents to attend a Blood Collection Drive on Tuesday, March 28th from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

Councilwoman Maier stated, “Blood supplies are critically needed for local hospitals to meet the demand and continue saving lives. Please consider participating in this blood drive to help bolster our blood banks and ensure as many people as possible can be helped. Together, we can give the gift of life though

a simple blood donation.”

Appointments are preferred for the Town’s Blood Drive. To qualify as a donor, a person must be between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that donors eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. Additionally, all donors will receive a voucher for a free Blizzard at Dairy Queen.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment.

With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.” Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

New Lifeguard Employment Opportunities At Town Pools And Beaches

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced new lifeguard employment opportunities at Town Pools and Beaches, including a new competitive starting salary of $18 per hour for all lifeguards, as well as openings for 15-year olds to lifeguard at community pools for the first time.

“From having the opportunity to work at one of the Town’s fantastic summer facilities and building confidence, selfesteem, and leadership skills, to making new friends and helping others, working as a lifeguard is one of the best summer jobs around,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Our lifeguards provide an invaluable service in protecting our residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters. We encourage you to take the first step in making

this summer your best one yet by applying to be a Town of Oyster Bay Lifeguard today.”

The Town is accepting lifeguard applications from candidates who possess Nassau Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Additionally, the Town is offering Red Cross Lifeguard Training and Nassau County Certification courses for residents who are not certified, but would like to be. Upon successful completion of these two courses, residents will be eligible for employment as a lifeguard with the Town of Oyster Bay and the Town will then pay all fees for both courses. There are also many future opportunities for advancement, including as Swim Team Coaches, Swim Lesson Teachers, Head Lifeguards, and Lifeguard

Managerial positions.

“This summer, the Town of Oyster Bay is making it easier than ever to become a lifeguard. We’re offering all the certification and training courses you need to apply, covering the fees of these courses for successful candidates, welcoming 15year olds to our lifeguard ranks at Town community pools, and increasing our lifeguards’ starting salary to $18 per hour in recognition of the life-saving work they do,” added Supervisor Saladino.

United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows (ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday

and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

Nassau County Bar Association Charitable Arm Hosts Day of Carnival Themed Fun for Over 200 Local Children

On Thursday, February 23, 2023, more than 200 deserving children ages 5-12 from local Nassau County organizations were treated to a day of carnival games, sweet snacks like snow cones and cotton candy, a pizza truck, and fun, including games and dancing, and a special visit from Nassau County Administrative Judge Hon. Vito M. DeStefano, at the 33rd Annual Children’s Festival.

Also in attendance were celebrity mascots including Mr. Met from the New York Mets, Sparky the Dragon from the New York Islanders, and QuackerJack from the Long Island Ducks.

The Children’s Festival is held annually, courtesy of volunteer attorneys and judges of the Nassau County Bar Association’s charitable arm, the WE CARE Fund, with a mission to instill positive attitudes and

relationships with the local legal community and provide a fun activity during school winter break.

The WE CARE Fund, a part of the Nassau Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Nassau County Bar Association (NCBA), receives contributions from the Nassau County legal community and local businesses.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board at the Towns’ annual Dune Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach. The event begins at 10 a.m. by the dunes at TOBAY.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “The Dune Stabilization Project brings together residents of all ages in an effort to protect

and preserve our beautiful shoreline and environment by planting stalks of dune grass. Dunes along our south shore continue to face environmentally damaging storms that have a significant impact on the beach. Statistics indicate that the planting of dune grass provides a natural shield that is perfect for withstanding storm surges and high winds.”

Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and

make a difference.

“This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their resume. Our summer recreation counselors get real-world experience while having fun, making memories, and making a difference in the lives of others,” said Supervisor Saladino.

Applicants must be available for the duration of the program, which runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, beginning July 5th through August 11th. Summer Recreation Program participants take part in trips, tournaments, shows and athletic events, including the TOBAY Games, making being a counselor a great first job for many residents.

Lou Imbroto invite residents to be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the annual Polar Plunge benefitting Special Olympics New York on Saturday, March 25th at TOBAY Beach.

“Many of our residents head to TOBAY Beach for summer fun, but this event provides an enjoyable and charitable reason to spend a great day at the beach much sooner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Participants will have an opportunity to prove their mettle and their compassion by wading into the chilly waters of TOBAY

Beach to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York.”

The event kicks off with winter festival fun and registration starting at 9:30 a.m., with the plunge beginning at 11 a.m. Requested donation is $25 per participant. Plungers who raise $150 receive a commemorative Polar Plunge sweatshirt.

All of the money raised through the Polar Plunge® helps provide year-round sports training and competition as well as leadership, health and inclusion programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities in your community.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Scheduled performances for March include:

Phil Costa & The Something Special Swing Band on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 4:00 pm at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library – Performing a variety of big band music including arrangements of Count Basie, Doc Severinsen and Maynard Ferguson.

Glenn Sings Glen on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Locust Valley Library – A Tribute to Glen Campbell.

Metro Music with John Walters on Sunday, March

26, 2023 at 2:30 pm at the Farmingdale Public Library – A rich variety of well-known, delightful songs played in an upbeat style that will have you swinging along!
