‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City.

The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.

Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know.

And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will

cooperate remains to be seen.

March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home.

So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

A Thought

The Town of Oyster Bay is participating in a 2017 Soldier Collection Drive in an effort to gather needed supplies to be sent to the men and women serving around the globe and is asking residents to help support the drive. This is the tenth year the Town is participating in this collection drive.

Last year, Town residents, with the assistance of the Town workforce, donated more than 1,800 pounds of much-needed supplies. This year, with residents’ support, they hope to surpass that amount.

Anyone interested in donating to the collection drive may drop off items at Town Hall North in Oyster Bay; Department of Public Works (CSEA entrance) in Syosset; Town Hall South in Massapequa; and at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at Bethpage Community Park.

The collection drive will end on Friday, April 7th.

Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer and the Department of Human Services recently hosted the Town’s 29th annual Black History Month Celebration at Amityville Memorial High School.

This year’s event was titled “The Crisis in Black Education,” and featured a variety of performances as well as local honorees.

Deborah Payton-Jones, who serves as both the Volunteer Coordinator at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Election Inspection Coordinator for the Suffolk County Board of Elections, was the Mistress of Ceremonies for the event.

Edible Eden: The Art of Long Island’s Forests, Fields and

Bringing History to Life The Farmingdale School District recently brought history to life at Albany Avenue Elementary School during its recent “History Alive” presentation.

During two assemblies, Broadway theatre veteran Patrick Garner portrayed Thomas Alva Edison and Captain Meriwether Lewis of Lewis and Clark to teach students about American history and the evolution of technology.

During each assembly student-volunteers, dressed in neckerchiefs, blankets and hats, joined

Garner onstage as Edison’s assistants and Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery.

Working alongside “Thomas Edison,” students recreated some of Edison’s most famous experiments and learned the value of hard work, mistakes, turning liabilities into assets and enjoying one’s work. Playing as Lewis and Clark’s Corps of Discovery, students encountered the scenic majesty of the wild American landscape and discovered natural science, character development and teamwork. The students

have been studying the work of Thomas Edison and Lewis and Clark as part of their biography and history curriculum.

This program was organized through a partnership between the Farmingdale School District and Theatreworks USA to engage students in their history material.

Theatreworks is is America’s largest educational theatre for young and family audiences.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently joined with the Farmingdale Women’s Club to celebrate National Women’s Month by unveiling a display case of The Women’s Club historical memorabilia at the Farmingdale Public Library.

National Women’s Month honors the origin of the Farmingdale Women’s Club when nineteen women

came together in 1913 to promote civic, educational and social interests of the community. Over a century later, the Farmingdale Women’s Club now supports homeless Long Island veterans, active servicemen and women, the hungry on Long Island, needy adults and children on Long Island as well as families of domestic violence and abuse victims.

Digital Learning The Farmingdale School District recently immersed elementary school children in a digital-learning activity as part of its commitment to exposing students to new-age technology. Mrs. Bany and Mrs. Quimbay’s classes at Albany Avenue Elementary School used Google Chromebooks

provided by the District to solve puzzles and find solutions to digital classroom challenges.

This initiative prepares students to participate in the District’s “One to World” program at Howitt Middle School, in which each child receives his or her own Chromebook.

Students use their Chromebooks to learn how to code, create templates for 3-D printing and access virtual education tools.

This district-wide program enables students to fully integrate their studies digitally.

Robotics Team Triumphs Farmingdale School District recently celebrated the Farmingdale High School Robotics Team, ‘The Robodalers,’ who recently took home the championship trophy at the VEX Robotics Competition at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology.

The Farmingdale Robotics Team brought home numerous awards

including two Tourney Championships, one Build Award, one Programming Skill Award and one Overall Skills Award.

Participating students included: Alex Burbano, Ashley Burbano, Joe Cangemi, Corey Casciano, Mitchell Grossman, Abby Grote, John Lowenhaupt, Jack Miller, Selina Nguyen, Esther Sherry and Cliff Yeung.

Students in the Farmingdale School District participate in this and other robotics and programming competitions throughout the country every year as part of the District’s dedication to providing students with outstanding opportunities to explore the science, technology, engineering and math fields.

100 LESSONS - Farmingdale School District students at Albany Avenue Elementary School, 5-10 years old, recently celebrated the One Hundredth Day of School. Annually, students throughout the Farmingdale School District use calendar and math activities building toward the culmination with the 100th day of school with fun, interactive learning activities. During the event, students and their teachers dressed up as 100 year-old people and participated in lessons themed around the number 100.

ROBOTICS TEAM TRIUMPHS - The Farmingdale High School robotics team triumphs again with the Robodalers and VEXcalibur robots earning the championship trophy at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. With their alliance partner The Harvey School, they defeated Jericho High School in the final match with a score of 44-6. The team participated in the competition as part of a Farmingdale School District initiative to provide outstanding science, technology, engineering and math opportunities to students.
