Moriches Field Brewing Company received $18,750 to revitalize an empty downtown space.
(Cheers to that.)
Revitalization grants are just one of the ways we help businesses on Long Island and in the Rockaways. For Moriches Field Brewing Company, a grant from our economic development program was a perfect fit to help them renovate a previously vacant property. A discount through our Vacant Space Revival Program saved them more than $4,000 on their electric bills, and rebates for upgrading to LED lighting are keeping them saving month after month.
Helping revitalize our Island, one business at a time, is something we’re proud to be part of and something definitely worth celebrating.

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®
Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.
Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.
Located at 286 Middle Island Rd in Medford, the Long Island Chapter works to raise awareness, recruit new puppy raisers and volunteers and support one another’s work on behalf of the Canine Companions’ mission. This Chapter is a lively network filled with opportunities for social engagement from puppy classes to fundraisers. Beyond the satisfaction of doing good work for Canine Companions, lifelong friendships are often formed among chapter members.
The benefits of having a service dog can be indescribable, often life-changing.
Canine Companions provides dogs for an array of disabilities; they o er service dogs for adults, children and veterans with a physical or auditory disability or posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as well as professionals working in a health care, visitation, criminal justice or education settings. The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year.
In recent years, Yucca, a Facility Dog, became a new furry member of the Phillips Avenue Elementary School in Riverhead, NY (placed by Canine Companions). She helps students learn responsibility, come out of their shell and even helps those that experience issues at home, such as past traumas or emotional/social issues.
“Having a dog there to just talk to or pet can really help the children,” explained teacher Emilee Raynor. “Yucca loves our

As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.
for a weaker economy and who failed to plan.
students and they know she is not judging them, so they take more risks when working with her than with their peers.”
Yucca is incorporated into daily lessons, such as language practice, when students read to her and describe the commands Yucca is following. “I have already seen the huge impact that Facility Dog Yucca has made in the classroom. Students are so excited to come to class. They work hard for Yucca and understand their responsibilities.”
Yucca’s impact is among countless success stories. If you are looking to make a di erence, you can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love.
Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.
To learn more about these opportunities, please visit www.canine.org or call 631.561.0200.
But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.
What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand
and face the obstacle in front of them? Often, they are the winners.
In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money. Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned
Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.
What is your plan when things don’t go your way?
Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.

Are you looking to increase the value of your home?
If you are planning on selling your home, now is the best time to do so. Before you list your house on the market be sure to upgrade your home in order to get the highest price possible for your property. In order to get the most out of your sale you must invest some money into home upgrades. This will increase the curb appeal & the overall value of your property. There are plenty of low-cost upgrades that are affordable and will give you a high return on your investment. One of the main projects that will increase your home's curb appeal the most, with low initial investment, is a new entry door. The entry door of your home sets the tone for your entire house. It is one of the first features potential buyers see as they walk into your home. A beautiful new entry door will increase the value of your property dramatically. An initial investment of a few thousand dollars can bring you a return of up to 95%! This return is also true for replacement windows in your home. However, the upgrade that will give you the best return on your investment is the siding on your home. The siding on your home is the largest portion of your property and accounts for the majority of your home's exterior style. Replacing just the front siding on your home can increase the value of your property substantially. New siding on a property can bring in up to a 110% return on your investment! If you are looking to sell your house or just increase its value, upgrading your windows, doors, siding, and roofing will bring you the best return on your investment. - UNIFIED HOME REMODELING 888-631-2131

Return Of The Howitt Heimlich Hero
A student at Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale saved the life of a classmate by performing the Heimlich Maneuver.
Mackenzie Anderson and Niousline Michel ate lunch during the fifth period on Tuesday, February 14th. It was days before winter recess, and both girls looked forward to a long break from tests and homework. Mackenzie and Niousline had attended Saltzman East Memorial and were friends before entering Howitt Middle School this past fall. As Mackenzie ate her lunch, she locked eyes with Nisouline, who had started banging on the table with a panic-stricken look. Several friends jumped, yelled, and waved their arms to alert the lunch monitors of the situation.
Mackenzie worried her friend couldn’t breathe and didn’t wait for help to arrive.
“We have to do something,” said Mackenzie Anderson. “I tried my best to perform the Heimlich Maneuver, and when I saw the food shoot from her mouth, I got excited. I did it!”
Niousline’s airway was cleared, and her breathing returned to normal. A piece of a churro was the culprit. Lunch monitors were by Niousline’s side in seconds to check on her as the cafeteria erupted into cheers for Mackenzie’s heroic efforts.
“She saved my life,” said Niousline Michel. “I was laughing and eating, then suddenly, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I was so scared.”
The Heimlich Hero
program was taught to all Howitt Middle School students during health class earlier this school year. Students watched a fifteen-minute video that taught them how to recognize the signs of choking and respond with the Heimlich Maneuver. Students were paying attention. This is the second Howitt Heimlich Hero Farmingdale has had this school year.
“Regardless of a student’s age, size, or strength, they can successfully dislodge an item from someone’s throat when choking and save a life,” said Cheryl DePierro. “ I am so proud of all our students who took the training seriously, and I am especially proud of Mackenzie and Niousline for remembering exactly what to do in an emergency.”
Safely Rolling To My Destination Farmingdale Artists Receive Top Honors In New York School Bus Safety Contest
Earlier this school year Farmingdale art teachers challenged students to create designs for the National School Bus Safety Poster Contest. The theme is “Safely Rolling to My Destination”. Three eighth graders from Howitt Middle School and a fifth grader from Woodward Parkway took top honors. The National School
Bus Safety Poster Contest is sponsored by The New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) in partnership with the New York State Education Department and in accordance with guidelines and rules set out by the American School Bus Council (ASBC).
The three students from Barbara Ginexi’s art class
at Howitt Middle School who won are Emily Villatoro (1st), Morris Davidson III (2nd), and Andrea Echeverria (3rd). Woodward Parkway’s winner from Erica Weisfelner’s art class is Natalie Hernandez (1st). First place winners will receive $100. Second place $75 and Third place $50. Congratulations, Dalers!

Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students
To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘Marine Pollution Solutions.’
“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways and various ways
to solve the issue of marine pollution, including proper recycling. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster.
The top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.
“This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center, Friends of the Bay, and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marine Program. These organizations greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of how to protect our environment and improve
the quality of our waterways while having the potential of winning some great prizes.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a $100 gift certificate to Long Island Aquarium, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, Friends of the Bay apparel and a Choose Local F.I.S.H. t-shirt from CCE. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 31st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. Second and third place winners will also receive a gift certificate to the Waterfront Center, receive a tree planting in their school district, as well as apparel and reusable items.
Along with their poster

Finding Hope & Purpose After The Loss Of Your Partner Or Spouse
One of the most traumatic of losses, coping with the passing of a partner or spouse is very difficult and is an acutely unique intimate loss, usually leading to an overwhelming grieving process. But experts say that with thoughtful support, individuals who have experienced the loss of a partner, can find hope and purpose, and learn to navigate holidays and events again that tend to weigh heavily on widows and widowers.
“What’s unique about the loss of a partner or spouse are the secondary losses most experience such as the loss of the person you sleep beside every night, the loss of the person you raise your children with, the loss of income now that your partner has passed on, etc.,” says Grief Coach, Kathryn Monaco Douglas. “And then when you throw in celebrated days like birthdays and holidays, coping with the loss of a partner can be especially challenging.”
Kathryn Monaco
Douglas, who was widowed at a young age, and who now helps widows and widowers through her sought-after support group, Widowed Not Alone, believes that with the right support from the very beginning of their grieving process, individuals who have lost partners do not need to feel as if they are now left to handle life on their own.
In Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum’s recent February 7th workshop, “Finding Hope & Purpose After the Loss of Your Partner or Spouse,” which was developed in partnership with the grief and healing organization COPE, Douglas led individuals through a healing workshop that provided guidance and connection for widows and widowers and shared tips for common trigger days such as celebrated days and holidays.
“Widowhood is a club that no one wants to belong to, but individuals who participate, are fortunate to have each other,” asserts Douglas, Founder and
President of Widowed Not Alone. “At Widowed Not Alone, there is no support group completion date. It consists of an eight week program, but afterwards members continue with us socially. With shared commonalities, participants form lifelong friendships.”
“Our group model supports the bereaved from day one, to help individuals navigate through their loss from the start, whereas most others require grievers to wait up to three months before joining,” emphasized Douglas. “I feel that it’s vital to provide a welcoming community that provides a sense of belonging immediately knowing that mourners who have lost their partner or spouse face emotional and practical concerns and issues right away.”
“Pinelawn’s healing workshops focus on providing the tools and strategies for healthy coping with the loss of a loved one,” said Justin Locke, President of Pinelawn Memorial Park

and Arboretum. “We are privileged to have had Kathryn lead this important workshop and also want to thank COPE, our partner in generating awareness for grief healing services. Pinelawn is proud to make these essential grief workshops available for free to the bereaved.”
“Our community is very fortunate to have had Kathryn leading this important and timely workshop - her work and her wisdom come directly from her own lived experience,” said Adam Rabinovitch, Executive Director of COPE. “We are grateful to Kathryn and to Pinelawn for creating this opportunity for connection and closeness with others - it is a crucial part of the grief experience and healing from the loss of an intimate partner.”
Some ideas and suggestions Douglas shared with participants during the workshop, to help them through the recent Valentine’s Day holiday included, making a plan in advance so that you’re not left alone or without an activity. She also suggested that if you do go out, to take your own car, so that you can leave whenever you’re ready.
