Each year, the Nassau Music Educators Association (NMEA) selects the best student musicians from schools throughout the county to participate in its annual All-County Festival. Held in January at Long Island University’s
Farmingdale Highlights
Tilles Center in Brookville, this year’s festival featured 103 representatives from Farmingdale Schools! These talented musicians in grades 5-12 were chosen based on teachers’ nominations and their outstanding scores in the New York State
School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) 2022 Adjudication Festival. Farmingdale students participated in ensembles across five divisions: band, orchestra, chorus, jazz band, and jazz chorus. These tremendous accomplishments

Tri-M Senior Recital
The 2023 Senior Class members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society performed in their senior recital on January 20, 2023. Tri-M is the international honor society recognizing secondary music students for their musical ability, academic excellence, school involvement, and community service. These students have given the Farmingdale Music Department many
years of service and dedication. Students must maintain honors in their academics and their ensembles. They have participated in prestigious groups such as the NMEA All-County Music Festival, the Long Island String Festival, the NYSSMA All-State Festival, the NAfME All-Eastern, and All-National Music Festivals. They have become leaders in
the music department while consistently maintaining the high standards that we expect. These students have helped conduct NYSSMA events, usher concerts, and auditions and rehearsals for the Pops concert. They are section leaders and principal players for their ensembles. They are drum majors and model student musicians for the next generation.
“We are incredibly proud of all their achievements and resilience, especially during these last two years, and it has been our honor watching them mature into the fine young musicians showcased at this year’s recital,” said Ti-M co-advisors Thérèse Mannino and Joseph Franzino.

Dalers Secure A Spot In Cheerleading State Championships
Hofstra University hosted the Nassau Championships on Sunday, February 19. Farmingdale High School Varsity Cheer earned its second county title in the program’s five-year existence.
Dalers won the Nassau County Division 1 Small Schools championship weeks after performing at the National High School
Cheerleading Championship in Walt Disney World. There they competed against the best in the nation finishing as Small Varsity Division 1 semi-finalist and 11th in the Division 1 Medium Varsity Game Day.
“Our routine has had several upgrades since the start of the season,” coach Caitlin Beatrice said. “We’ve only been competing with
this routine for about two months.”
A bright future awaits this young talented team as ten of Farmingdale’s 15 cheerleaders are freshmen. The Competitive Cheerleading Championships are on March 4 at Visions Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton. Farmingdale last won the state title in 2020.

Packed House. In February, Farmingdale High School hosted the All-District Strings concert, bringing together student musicians from all six Farmingdale schools. Nearly 300 students performed in a packed house inside the high school auditorium.
“Everyone in the
audience can see and hear the level of growth that takes place from the elementary to the high school level,” said Director of Fine and Performing Arts Greg Warnokowski.
“Congratulations to Ms. Mannino, Mr. Gelfer, Mr. Szabo, Mr. Eustaquio, Ms. Cocheo, Ms. Felker, and all of our students for their hard work and dedication.”
The grand finale brought students from every grade level to perform Beethoven’s Ode To Joy. The All-District Strings concert is staged every three years, alternating with All-District Band and All-District Chorus. This was their first performance since 2018.
To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘Marine Pollution Solutions.’
“This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino.
Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways and various ways to solve the issue of marine pollution, including proper recycling. Submissions should be made on poster paper (no larger than 12”x18”). No edible items should be used on the poster. The top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter.
Marine Program. These organizations greatly contribute to our efforts in further protecting and preserving the environment,” said Councilwoman Walsh.
“I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides an opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of how to protect our environment and improve the quality of our waterways while having the potential of winning some great prizes.”
Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a $100 gift certificate to Long Island Aquarium, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, Friends of the
Bay apparel and a Choose Local F.I.S.H. t-shirt from CCE. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, March 31st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®
www.canine.org
Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.
Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:
Teamwork: They believe in the joyful and transforming power of the partnership between an individual and their dog.
Compassionate Service: They treat everyone they serve with respect and empathy.
Integrity: They do what is right guided by honesty, accountability and sincerity.
Community: They practice inclusion and acceptance to build positive relationships within their diverse community.
Excellence: They conduct ourselves with professionalism in pursuit of the highest standards.
Innovation: They continually pursue new ideas to unleash their greatest potential.
Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.
the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.
The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.
During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog. Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.
A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.
“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Employers Offered Free Table At Upcoming Town Job Fair
Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier invites employers to register today for table space at the Free Job Fair being hosted on Thursday, March 30th, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Hosted by the Workforce Partnership, New York State Department of Labor and Town of Oyster Bay, the event offers tremendous benefits for businesses seeking candidates for positions.
Register today as space is limited for the March 30th Free Job Fair. Call (516) 7974560 or email at business@ oysterbay-ny.gov. Here are just some of the reasons you should register today: Save Time. Whether you have a position open or not, it’s always smart to be on the lookout for top talent. Job fairs introduce hiring managers to the talent on a much more meaningful
level than online, and at higher volumes—all within hours.
Brand Awareness. Simply put - job fairs are also public relation events. Companies attending job fairs will likely have their logo included in promotional work, and they lend a sense of establishment to participants. Plus, it’s a chance to develop your company reputation through public interaction. Better Candidates. Job fairs tend to target specific industries and skills. They can also be excellent sources for young talent.
Face to Face Interaction. Sometimes it can be more efficient to skip the resumealthough not entirely. Cover letters, resumes, Zoom calls - they all serve as screeners to get to the heart of the matter: who is this person?
Job fairs let hiring managers start at the heart. Face to face communication offers the first glimpse into whether a

Registration Begins March 7th For April Programs
person’s a good fit for your company culture, thereby significantly shortening the screening process.
Networking. Job seekers aren’t the only ones making connections at job fairs. Obviously, such events are mixers for businesses from a spectrum of industries. Plus, they may even offer a unique look at your competition.
The Unexpected Candidate. Sometimes the perfect candidate isn’t in your target zone, or vice versa. When you have several industries loaded into the same venue as a pool of talent, you never know who you might find. For example, a talented videographer probably knows enough about cameras to be an excellent sales rep.
Making an Early Connection. Another advantage of career fairs are the connections made with passive candidates “just looking.” Spotting talent early is an excellent way to nurture a relationship and give you an edge over your competition.
Remaining Socially Engaged
(NAPSI)—Remaining socially engaged improves quality of life for older adults and is associated with better mental and physical health. The Eldercare Locator can help. Visit eldercare.acl.gov or call (888) 677-1116 to get connected to a nearby agency that can provide much-needed support, right in the community.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Laura Maier announced that residents who are interested in maintaining or improving their levels of fitness will be able to register for the Town’s popular CoEd Fitness Classes at the Hicksville Athletic Center. Classes run for 10 weeks and are offered to individuals 18 years of age or older.
“The Town’s spring coed recreational programs have consistently proven to be one of the most popular programs the Town offers each year, as they provide a terrific outlet for our residents to exercise and stay in shape,” said Councilwoman Maier. “The Town’s Parks Department has done an amazing job offering residents the opportunity to take advantage of these classes and stay physically active, creating an optimal environment for fitness and forging new friendships!”
This April, residents can participate in a variety of fitness classes that will be held at the Hicksville Athletic Center:
Ballroom Dancing: Saturdays, from 7pm to 8pm, beginning April 8th.
Cardio Kick-Boxing: Thursdays, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, beginning April 6th.
Pilates: Mondays, from 8pm to 9pm, beginning April 3rd.
Yoga: Residents can choose their session from the following: Saturdays (beginning April 8th from 9am to 10am), Sundays (beginning April 2nd from 9am to 10am), Mondays (beginning April 3rd from 10am to 11am *This class will be held at the Allen Park in Farmingdale*), and Tuesdays (beginning April 11th from 7pm to 8pm).
Zumba: Mondays (beginning April 3rd from 6:45pm to 7:45pm) or Wednesdays (beginning
April 5th from 7:30pm to 8:30pm).
Online registration begins Monday, March 6th at 5pm at www.oysterbaytown. com/portal. You must upload proof of residency (tax or utility bill) and a valid identification card such as a driver’s license.
In-person registration will be available at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville, on Tuesday, March 7th, from 5pm to 9pm. The schedule is subject to change. If a session is cancelled, make-up day(s) will be attempted. Class fees are $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents (checks or money orders only). Proof of residency/age required when registering, with TOB residents given first preference. Participants must bring their own mat to yoga and Pilates. For more information, call (516) 7977945 or email tobparks@ oysterbay-ny.gov.
Hunger Affects All Family Members, Including Pets
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato announced that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Pet Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 1st to March 31st with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members.
“Pets truly are members of our family,” said Tax Receiver Pravato. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at
home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.”
The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations.
“Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Supervisor Saladino. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food
drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.”
Those interested in supporting the Town’s Pet Food & Supply Drive can place donated items in drop-off boxes located in the following Town of Oyster Bay locations:
Town Hall North, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay
Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa
Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, 1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage
Regular business hours for the locations are Monday – Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. For more information, visit www. licares.org or call Esther Alter in the Town’s Public Information Office at (516) 624-6380.

Councilman Hand Announces Spring 2023 Youth Dek Hockey Program
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that registration for the Town’s Spring Youth Dek Hockey Program will soon open both online and in person. Dek Hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. This co-ed program includes instruction and games for the 8U Age Group and both practices and games for the 10U, 12U, and 14/16U group.
“Boys and girls who are enrolled in the Town’s Youth Dek Hockey Program will have a great opportunity to not only improve their hockey skills, but to also learn important life lessons such as good sportsmanship
and teamwork from our talented coaching staff,” Councilman Hand said.
“This is a great activity for youngsters, whether they have experience in hockey or are just learning and are interested in playing hockey for the first time.”
The Dek Hockey season runs from April 1 to July 1 and takes place at Ellsworth Allen Park (Motor Ave, Farmingdale). Player evaluations will take place here on April 1st at 10am, and a parent and volunteer meeting will be held on April 6th at 6:00pm at the TOB Ice Skating Center in Community Room 2. Full Team Registrations are being accepted; no evaluation is needed if a player is registered with a team.

Did You Know?
Deep breathing exercises can help individuals maintain personal health and well-being. According to the American Institute of Stress, 20 to 30 minutes per day of “belly breathing,” also known as abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, can reduce stress and anxiety. The American
Sleep Association reports that focusing on breath might be able to help induce sleep for people struggling to fall asleep. In addition to helping reduce stress and promote relaxation, breathing techniques are useful during labor to focus and release tension. Individuals with COPD often find it
difficult to breathe, which can compound anxiety and make it even harder to breathe. But the COPD Foundation notes that two different breathing techniques can help an individual take in air without working hard: abdominal breathing and pursed-lips breathing.
