cience students enrolled in the Farmingdale’s Howitt Middle School recently participated in an interactive engineering lesson called Junkyard Wars. The purpose of the activity was for students to design and build miniature inventions to answer problems that were assigned to them in their classes. Seventh grade students created mousetrap powered cars, and sixth grade students built catapults that shot up to 15 feet.

Nassau BOCES has been selected as one of 20 educational organizations to participate in the Strategic Data Project, a program of the Center for Education Policy Research (CEPR) at Harvard University. The agency will be partnering with CEPR to transform data usage in education to improve teacher, student and school achievement.

Volunteer coaches and Steel Fitness Gym trainers observed participants throughout the competition to ensure that the sit-ups and pushups were completed correctly and counted accurately.

The competition was dedicated to the late Dorothy C. Camilleri, a

Bellmore resident who battled Alzheimer’s Disease for several years. Her husband, Louis, who is 89 years old, got out of his wheelchair and did one situp in honor of his late wife.

On February 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its 1st Annual Give From The Heart Athletes for Alzheimer’s event at Steel Fitness Gym in Bellmore.

The event raised over $5,000 for its programs that help those who suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and their unpaid caregivers.

NATIONAL WEAR RED DAY - Red was the color of the day on Friday, February 7th, as St. Charles Hospital employees participated in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) National Wear Red Day. The AHA designates the first Friday of each February as Wear Red Day, to bring attention to and create awareness about the number one killer of women, heart disease. The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island will be offering free eye donation educational sessions throughout the month of March in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens, the North Shore-LIJ Health System announced recently.

March is the 31st Annual National Eye Donor Awareness Month.

Since 1961, more than one million adults and children have had their sight restored as a result of eye donations, according to the Eye Bank Association of America.

The Lions Eye Bank for Long Island, which is located at Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream and serves the New York metropolitan area, has provided the gift of sight to more than 12,650 people since its inception in 1986.

Hockey Tournament

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the large school division of the New York State Club School Hockey Tournament – sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) from Friday, February 28th through Sunday March 2nd, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto.

Some of the best high school teams from throughout New York State will come to the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, for this prestigious tournament.

The admission/donation for the event will be $10 for adults for the day or $15 for the weekend.

Students with school ID will be $5 and children under 12 are Free.

“Ice Hockey, throughout Long Island and New York State, is continuing to grow in popularity, producing accomplished players who have gone on to compete at very high levels,” Supervisor Venditto said. ““Here is a unique opportunity for the entire family to enjoy top tier action on the ice and catch the rising stars.

Steve Rupp, President of the Nassau County High School Hockey League, said he was looking forward to the upcoming tournament.

“It’s great for the game,” Rupp said. “Many areas from throughout New York State, including Long Island, are proud of their local hockey programs and this tournament gives teams from across New York the excitement of competing for the state crown. In addition, our players in Nassau County are looking forward to playing at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, which is among the finest rinks in the country.

Many Nassau County players are proud to call this rink their home and are eager to defend their home ice.” Massapequa High School and Syosset High School are among the local teams slated to compete. Two years ago, Massapequa High School won this tournament.

Supervisor Venditto said the tournament will have a special atmosphere. “We have a lot of respect for the traditions of hockey in New

York State,” he said. “I am pleased to help facilitate these championship games, which will surely create lasting memories for the players.”

Supervisor Venditto said the New York State Club Hockey Tournament will also serve as a fine example for the Town’s young hockey players in attendance, who can one day aspire to compete against the best.

“The game will feature terrific role models for our young hockey players,” said Supervisor Venditto.

“It will be a great weekend of hockey and we’re pleased to have it right here in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

Golf Course To Open Soon The Town of Oyster Bay’s Golf Course will soon be ready for another season of play. “Depending upon the weather, our outstanding facility is expected to be ready for play by March 18th,” Councilman Macagnone said.

“Golf membership registration will start on Wednesday, February 26th at the golf course and there will be no fee increases for the 2014 season.”

With the Town holding the line on fees, Councilman Macagnone said patrons will be treated to an outstanding experience and value. “Our members are all aware that rates at surrounding golf courses have been steadily increasing, while rates at the Town’s course will remain the same,” Councilman Macagnone said. “With its challenging, yet very playable holes and its pastoral setting on the grounds of a former estate, the Town of Oyster Bay’s beautiful, championship golf course in Woodbury ranks among the most popular municipal courses on Long Island.” By registering, seasonal members will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the amenities that the Town of Oyster Bay’s renowned 18hole par 70 championship golf course has to offer. Annual membership fees, daily green fees, gas carts and tee time reservation fees will all be the same as last year. “With

the cold weather months still upon us, playing a round of golf seems a long way off,” Councilman Macagnone said.

“In reality, the season is right around the corner.” Fees are posted on the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown. com.

In addition to the cost-saving benefits of seasonal membership, those who join will continue to have the option of purchasing Advanced Tee-Times. “People work hard and have busy schedules,” Councilman Macagnone said. “The Town takes pride in having affordable programs that make it easy to enjoy a day of recreation.” Town of Oyster Bay Golf Course membership applications will be processed in the golf operations building beginning Wednesday, February 26th, 2014, and each Wednesday through Sunday thereafter from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. When purchasing a membership for the new season, each applicant must present two proofs of residency. Both must be original documents and contain the name and address of the applicant. At least one of the two documents MUST contain a photo of the applicant, such as a New York State driver’s license. The second Proofof-residency may be an automobile registration, utility bill or Town of Oyster Bay property tax bill.

On the grounds of the golf course, a turn-of-thecentury mansion clubhouse offers The Woodlands Catering Facility and Golf Bar (516.921.5707). Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Should Avoid (NAPSI)—Parents of young children need to be better educated in order to avoid making potentially dangerous safety mistakes when they are on the go.

The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe.

Many parents may be unknowingly endangering their children as three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Some Answers Busy parents and caregivers may be tempted by safety shortcuts when transporting children. AAA offers simple reminders to protect parents’ most precious cargo.

Shortcut: “I’m only driving a mile from home, so my son doesn’t need to be secured in his car seat since it’s a short trip.”

Reminder: You should buckle up properly on every trip—no matter the distance—especially since most crashes occur close to home.

Shortcut: “I’m picking up several kids after soccer practice and I’m going to put my 8-year-old daughter in the front seat so all the children can fit into the car.”

ECO-TEST - After learning about the 247 “superfund” cleanup sites contaminated with hazardous chemicals across Long Island, students in the Doshi STEM Program at Nassau BOCES decided to take action. The young scientists conducted testing for heavy metal contaminants in our local ecosystem including lead, arsenic and mercury. Students went out in the field to take coastal samples from Caumsett State Park, to compare with samples from a superfund site 10 miles away in Glen Cove.

They prepared and tested the samples at Brookhaven National Laboratory, conducing x-ray fluorescence tests using the lab’s state-of-the-art Synchrotron Light Source. To present their findings, the students created scientific posters.

By taking a few simple precautionary steps, it is possible to comfortably live with both pets and allergies. Here are a few helpful tips: • Shut the door. Keep cats or dogs from your bedroom—and not just when you are sleeping. If you keep the door closed, it will prevent cat or dog hair from drifting in during the day. This also applies to a guest room if you happen to be hosting a guest with allergies.

More than 900 people from across Long Island joined a “movement” on Wednesday, February 12th, by attending the hugely successful American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon at The Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury.
