The Charity of the Month for February is The Corporate Source

Watching the transition to adulthood brings upon many mixed emotions for the parent of any child. One of the deep concerns for parents of children with disabilities is how their child will succeed as they mature into adults. Will they live a productive life? Will they be able to support themselves and have independence? Will they be able to experience the beauty of accomplishments and achievements? Will they have a great quality of life?

An important consideration is employment. Meaningful employment gives a sense of pride and allows one to contribute to society in a significant way. It also provides financial stability and helps people fulfill their goals and dreams. Sadly, statistics show that about 80% of adults with disabilities are unemployed, and those who are employed are often underemployed.

The Corporate Source (TCS) is a nonprofit organization based in Garden City. They have been fulfilling their mission for 26 years, which is to promote employment opportunities for people with disabilities and to provide services leading to independence and fulfillment.

TCS is both an employer and service provider, with employees in the NY Metro area, Long Island, the Albany Capital Region, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the USVI. 85% of their direct labor have some type of a disability, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, physical disabilities or other medical impairments, visual and hearing impairments, or mental health di culties that qualify as a disability under government regulations.

TCS provides outsourcing services in several areas including facilities management, janitorial, mail-room and courier services, switchboard operations and kennel attendants. Candidates for employment are referred to TCS from many sources, such as the Adult Career and Continuing Education ServicesVocational Rehabilitation (ACCES-VR) services which is o ered through the

New York State Education Department and the Veteran’s Administration (VA).TCS also takes referrals from private agencies, local school districts, vocational training programs o ered through the Boards of Cooperative Education Services (BOCES) and more.

TCS has proudly adapted their hiring process to accommodate people with disabilities. Once an application is completed, candidates have an interview and short skills assessment to determine if the job is an appropriate match. Specialized training or prior experience is helpful, but TCS will absolutely train qualified candidates. Once on the job, The Corporate South can provide job support when and where it is needed or collaborate with job coaches from other organizations to promote the best chances of success on the job. Another special service that this organization o ers to their employees, as well as to outside referrals, is what they call “benefits counseling”, which is where certified benefits counselors provide meaningful advice to adults, youth and veterans.

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “Circle.” Mandala-making is a common Art Therapy method often used for insight, healing and self-expression. It is another way to practice mindfulness. Circles often symbolize the connectedness we have with all people, including our lost loved ones. Licensed Art Psychotherapist, Deborah Adler, will lead you into creating your very own mandala allowing you to explore your feelings whether they reflect grief, sadness, inspiration or hope. No artistic skill or experience is required.

Get creative, allow your mind to wander and enjoy the process while you design your art piece with colors, images and symbols that inspire you to reflect on your loved one. There will be dedicated time following the art experience to share mandalas and process any feelings and emotions that came up for you.

Let The Games Begin Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games Return To Farmingdale

Save the date, May 6, 2023. The Long Island Special Olympics Spring Games North are returning to Farmingdale. The Athletic Complex at Howitt Middle School is set to host the competition.

“We are incredibly excited for the Spring Games, not only for the competition but also to be coming back to Farmingdale schools,” said Stacey Hengsterman, President and CEO of Special Olympics New York. “On behalf of the hundreds of athletes who will participate in Spring Games, thank you to Superintendent Defendini as well as the district faculty, coaches, and community volunteers who are

making it possible.”

The Spring Games anticipate having over 500 athletes, 150 coaches, and hundreds of spectators and volunteers. Howitt Middle School will host events such as track and field and powerlifting. The brand new Aquatic Center at Howitt Middle School will host swimming events. Allen Park will host the tennis portion of the event.

Farmingdale School District will begin to reach out to those in the community to help take part in this event, which will be held on May 6, 2023. Those interested can help in three ways.

The first will be through the volunteer effort of getting the facility ready leading up to the event

and then helping clean up and get the facility back to normal. Second, the district will rely on local vendors to help establish the Olympic Village. Specifically, the district will be looking for vendors to provide games and workshops for people to participate in. Third, the Special Olympics will be looking for donations to help get the event running.

“This is a massive volunteer effort,” said Defendini. “We’re going to need a tremendous amount of volunteers to get this event off the ground. Farmingdale is a great place for that. We’re the kind of community when help is neededhelp is there.”

Louis Imbroto announced that registration for the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey Program will soon begin for boys and girls ages 6-16. Online registration opens for residents on March 6th and on March 8th for non-residents, with both taking place on www. oysterbaytown.com/portal.

In-person registration will also be offered on March 8th at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, where the program is run.

“This recreational and instructional program is designed to give youngsters a great way to learn the correct fundamentals of one of America’s most popular sports,” said Supervisor Saladino. “In addition to

receiving instruction on the proper techniques of skating, stickhandling and shooting, participants will make new friends and create lifelong memories.”

Families can register their children for the House League, which includes full House League games, a practice schedule, and playoffs, or a “Learn to Play” clinic, which runs for 10 weeks. In addition to All Girls Clinics for 10U&1218U and Boys & Girls 6U Clinics, an Adult Learn to Play Clinic is also offered. Registration fees for the House League are $350 for Residents and $450 for Non-Residents, while all clinics are $150. All programs begin on April 1, 2023.

Residents can register for the Spring 2023 Youth Ice Hockey Program online from March 6th at

9AM through March 8th at www.oysterbaytown.com/ portal, and non-residents can register online only on March 8th. Both residents and non-residents can register in person on March 8th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Bethpage Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. Registrants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (tax or utility bill), as well as payment. Check, money order, MasterCard or Visa will be accepted. All registrants must bring these items, even if they have participated in the past. A parent or legal guardian must be present at registration.

“Youngsters enrolled in the Town’s Youth Ice Hockey program are given

the great opportunity to improve their skating and hockey skills as part of a program that has earned recognition by the National Hockey League for its high level of quality,” said Councilman Imbroto. “Due to the great success of our Girls Hockey Program,

we have scheduled two dedicated sessions this spring to allow for even more participants. Our program is truly is among the best around, with an outstanding coaching staff ready to teach this sport to the many boys and girls enrolled in our program.”
