The Fashion Foundation A Unique Boutique with a Selfless Cause Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies.

As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration.

While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed.

Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art

supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does!

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem.

In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic.

This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can!

There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor.

You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case.

Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

The Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation have inducted three Farmingdale alumni and one coach into the Long Island Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Class of 2003’s Matt Danowski, Kim Hillier, and Krista PellizziMcDonough, along with Coach Joe Baccarella, were honored at the induction dinner, which was held January 18th, 2018, at the Long Island Marriot in Farmingdale.

“The District is extremely proud of their success.

This honors not only their athletic accomplishments, but their sportsmanship and character as well,” said Farmingdale School District Superintendent John Lorentz.

The Farmingdale High School Boys and Girls Lacrosse teams have a history of achievement in the sport, having been named Nassau Champions, Long Island Champions

and New York State Champions.

The mission of the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation is to raise awareness and provide resources in support of the game. Each year they nominate from the category of coaches, officials and players and final inductees are voted on by the general membership.

SPELLING BEE CHAMP - Farmingdale School District fourth grade student at Northside Elementary School, Nicholas Suwalski, smiles and after winning the 2018 Northside Elementary School Spelling Bee. The spelling bee contributes to the Farmingdale School District’s mission to challenge and inspire students in fun, engaging ways.

The Farmingdale School District’s Northside Elementary School hosted its first ever school-wide spelling bee. Top spellers from each fourth and fifth grade class competed against each other for the title of Spelling Bee Champion, which went to Nicholas Suwalski, a student in Mrs. Christine Braddick’s 4th grade class.

To prepare for the competition, students practiced spelling difficult words in the classroom, and teachers helped students research the etymological and historical roots of common words in the English language.

The Northside Elementary School Spelling Bee is part of the Farmingdale School District’s mission to challenge and inspire students in fun, engaging ways.
