Bus Driver And Student Honored For Heroism Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) honored Half Hollow Hills bus driver Janie Lozano and Signal Hill Elementary School student Hunter Javeline for their quick actions that ensured the safety of the students aboard a bus driven by Lozano when it caught fire.

The school bus was en route to Signal Hill Elementary School when Lozano noticed a “ball of

fire” emitting from the bus in the rearview mirror. She quickly stopped the bus and initiated its orderly evacuation, which was aided by Javeline, who Lozano indicated was integral in the students’ safe departure from the bus.

“It was my privilege to recognize Janie and Hunter for the heroism they exhibited,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “As

someone who drove a bus for ten years, I know that the safety of passengers is paramount in the mind of a bus driver. Janie’s actions were nothing short of courageous and Hunter’s assistance in the evacuation was remarkable and brave.

They are testaments to the excellence that is typical of the employees and students of the Half Hollow Hills Central School District.”

FHS COMPETITION CHEER TEAM COMPETES AT NATIONALS - The Farmingdale High School Competition Cheer Team participated for the first time in school history at the UCA High School Cheerleading Nationals. The competition was held February 7-9, 2020 at Walt Disney World in Florida. The team placed 5th out of 23 teams in the preliminaries. Overall, they came in 15th out of 45 teams from all over the United States. The girls had an outstanding performance at both prelims and semifinals and we are so proud!” said coach Caitlin Weinsheimer. “For a second-year varsity team and our first trip to UCA nationals, this is a very big accomplishment!”

Eleventh Annual LI HS Ethics Bowl

On Saturday, February 1, 2020, the Farmingdale High School History Club took part in the Eleventh Annual Long Island High School Ethics Bowl at Hofstra University. They participated with two teams— analyzing and discussing real-life, timely, ethical issues.

The students were accompanied by Farmingdale High School teachers Jim Hughes and Jennifer Theo-Kupstas, who devoted many hours

preparing students to defend the ethical questions posed during the bowl.

Team One (Amanda Stoll, Ariana Anderson, Paul Lloyd, Andrew Magrane, Zachary Suwalski, Lukas Savarese, and Matt Perez ) was selected to receive the Spirit of the Ethics Bowl award for their exemplary civil discourse.

Director of Social Studies Samantha Black served as a judge at the event. “Every year, the Ethics Bowl provides our

students with a unique opportunity to engage in thoughtful and meaningful dialogue with peers from across Long Island over cases encompassing multiple perspectives.”

The History Club is an extra-curricular group that supplements the social studies core curriculum.

The mission of the Ethics Bowl is to promote ethical awareness, critical thinking skills, civic engagement, and an appreciation for diverse points of view.

The unique program integrates arts and community and allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis.

Farmingdale’s State Route 109 Earmarked For Renewal!

Collaborative efforts of political leaders working together, along with the Village and Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, helped to confirm the state funding earmarked for the planned roadwork improvements along Route 109 on the Nassau/ Suffolk border.

“This project is imperative for the safety of drivers along Route 109 where the stretch of roadway has resulted in hazardous driving conditions, in need of repaving. It is great news that the combined efforts will result in moving ahead with the funding, as part of PAVE NY Initiative, to renew the roadway, which is located in and outside of Farmingdale Village. We have continually pushed for this funding to be added to the budget”, said Mayor Ralph Ekstrand.

And notably; this is the only state highway in all of Nassau County to be repaved this year. Governor Cuomo announced that the Farmingdale portion of Route 109 is planned to be renewed as part of a $151 million New York State funding project for roadways impacted by extreme weather events, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the stretch of Route 109 between the Nassau-Suffolk border and Route 24 has $4.1 million earmarked for roadwork.

Mayor Ekstrand went on to say that: “Teamwork

is the key to success and we thank the Governor’s Office for approving funds ensuring that Route 109 will be repaved! This has been sorely needed and an example of our Elected Officials working together for all of their efforts for this important project to move forward.”

I wish to thank all the following for their unwavering support in this, especially: Senator Kevin Thomas, Senator John Brooks, Senator Tim Kennedy, Assemblyman Mike Montesano, Assemblyman Mike Lipetri, Chamber President Joseph Garcia and the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce.

Senator Tim Kennedy, chair of the Senate Committee on Transportation, said the State is prioritizing safety and the changes will lead to a stronger economy.

“New York sees our fair share of tough winters, which deteriorate our roads, create potholes, and cause frustration for drivers statewide,” he said.

“It’s imperative that we’re dedicating significant state resources to ensure these roads are properly repaired and maintained.”

“Investment in our local infrastructure is critical to maintaining not only our quality of life, but guaranteeing that Long Island remains an attractive place to visit and conduct business.

It is imperative that we continue to make the necessary improvements to our bridges, tunnels, and roadways in order to ensure the long-term economic growth of our region,” said Assemblyman Mike LiPetri.

“I am proud to have worked with the Village of Farmingdale to secure $4.1 Million in state funding to repair and renew Route 109,” said Senator Kevin Thomas. “Maintaining our local roads and highways are critical to the success of our communities and small businesses.

Route 109 is a major economic thoroughfare for Farmingdale residents and visitors to the Village’s revitalized downtown area.

This project will improve safety and quality of life for all residents of Nassau County. I thank Governor Andrew Cuomo for his continued commitment to revitalizing our State’s roadways.”

In the interim take precautions driving along Route 109 near the Nassau – Suffolk border until the work is completed, expected to begin this spring and completed by winter 2020.

Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.

They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole.

This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade.

Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness.

These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program.

The upcoming spring season

for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet!
