Valentines For Veterans
A
s part of a lesson to enhance motor skills and creativity, Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School students in the Farmingdale School District recently created handmade Valentine cards for military veterans in honor of their service. The students made their Valentines out of paper plates by carefully cutting them into the shape of a heart. The students then decorated them with markers and crayons.

The importance of not using your cellphone while driving was reiterated to students at Plainedge High School during a Hang Up And Drive presentation by guest speaker Jacy Good. Ms. Good was in a tragic car accident the day she graduated from college, which took the life of her parents and left her with a 10 percent chance of surviving the night. Her message of determination in beating the odds and story of how she came to understand how the
accident happened offered firsthand insight into the repercussions of not only using your cellphone while driving, but not wearing a seatbelt. Her family’s car was hit by a 30-ton tractor trailer while it swerved out of the way to avoid hitting a car that went through a red light because the driver was distracted while making a phone call. Ms. Good’s mother, who was seated in the back, should have received the least impact from the crash, but
was not wearing a seatbelt. “I quickly learned that if I worked hard [in physical therapy] I could make myself stronger,” Ms. Good shared. “Maybe I survived for a purpose.” Her message for Plainedge students was clear: “There’s no safe way to use your phone and drive. I know its cliché, but there really is no excuse to not wear your seatbelt. I truly believe my mother would be alive today if she had worn her seatbelt.”

Plainedge High School’s Ben Franklin Ethics Bowl teams participated in the 5th Long Island High School Ethics Bowl competition on February 1st. In this competition, students compete for the best ethical reasoning in response to issues such as whether race or ethnicity
should be a factor in adoption, and under what conditions a government has the ethical right to restrict the natural rights of its citizens. Plainedge is one of only four teams that has been a part of all five Long Island high school ethics bowls. This year, the district entered two teams. Team

Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone is urging residents to support the Island Harvest Feed A Heart Food Drive scheduled for Saturday, February 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Waldbaum’s Supermarket located at 336 North Broadway in Jericho, New York. The drive is coordinated by First Impressions Entries and Design, a home builder and renovation contractor based in Hicksville. According to Island Harvest, 110,000 children on Long Island are at risk of hunger. Island Harvest is a Long Island food bank dedicated to fighting hunger and touching lives. “In the course of our everyday lives, we sometimes need to be reminded that there are people in need right in our own backyard,” Councilman Macagnone said. “This food drive
addresses this need and also builds awareness to this important cause.” As the L.I. Director for the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters and an officer in Carpenters Local 290, Councilman Macagnone said he truly appreciates the many colleagues in his industry who take the time to make a positive difference in the community. “First Impressions Entries and Designs, Inc. have provided homeowners with reliable contracting work on Long Island since 1989 and they proudly call the Town of Oyster Bay home,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Throughout their history, they have always been willing to go the extra mile to help those in need. This food drive is evidence of that.” Among the suggest food items to donate are low sodium canned vegetables, soups and
fruit, canned meat, whole pasta and cereal, nutritional beverages such as Boost and Ensure and personal care items. “Any person making a donation will be eligible for a raffle courtesy of Waldbaum’s, with the winner receiving a $200 gift card,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Much of the community is coming together to help make this event a success. Season Of Extremes By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it spring yet? Are we done with the endless parade of winter storms, bringing their onslaught of rain and sleet and slush and snow and ice and all that fun stuff? I know there are those who absolutely LOVE this season and all its wondrous whiteness, but seriously… enough is enough, don’t you think? Over the last several months, our lives have been literally consumed by national weather forecasts, a succession of storms with oh-so-cute names, a lifetime supply of rock salt
and sand, mad rushes to the store for milk and eggs and bread (you know, for all those “milk” sandwiches you make while snowed in!) and the fabulous process of shoveling, cleaning the car off, shoveling the new mound of icy boulders generously distributed by the plows… and on and on and on. Oh, and that’s before we attempt the treacherous process of actually driving anywhere. Like I said, is it spring yet? So many have said that, this year, after the winter we’ve had, they promise not to complain about the heat. 90º and humid?
Awesome, sign me up! Torrential downpours and thunderstorms? At least we won’t have to shovel! Stay tuned. Guaranteed, the first heat wave we experience, all that will go out the window. Too much of anything is irritating, especially when it disrupts our daily routine. A little here and there – sure, we can all deal with that. But this winter has been one of extremes. Of course, as I write these words, the forecast is calling for 50º next week. Time to break out the tank tops and shorts; but better keep that shovel handy!
Plainedge High School students Deepika Dhawan, Justin Law and Christina Szi represented the Plainedge School District at two prestigious research competitions this past weekend. Their papers were selected as social science semifinalists from among thousands
of Long Island and metro area science research experiments considered for the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium. They were invited to give oral presentations about their research at CUNY York College this week. In addition, these students presented their
projects at the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Winning papers will continue on to the regional finals for these competitions. Their success is the culmination of several years of intense research.
School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. is encouraging high school seniors who have participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs to apply for its Fred Breithut Scholarship. This special scholarship will assist an incoming student at Farmingdale State College throughout four years of college with $1,000 per semester (maximum eight semesters). Applicants must meet the following requirements: • Confirmed active participation in the SBPLI Long Island FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics program while in high school for at least two
years • A high school GPA of 85 or better • SAT score of 550 or better in math, and 1100 combined or better in math/critical reading • A letter from the team leader/mentor confirming active participation in the robotics program and addressing leadership, teamwork and gracious professionalism displayed by the student • An essay from the student addressing community activities in which he/she participated and how the scholarship will influence his/her career goals • Enrollment in one of Farmingdale State College’s four-year programs: mathematics, science, engineering technology or computer systems In order to continue
receiving the scholarship each semester while attending Farmingdale State College, the recipient must meet the following criteria: • 3.5 GPA at the end of each semester • A commitment to promote and support the Long Island FIRST robotics programs • A letter describing the actions he/she has taken to promote and support
the FIRST program on Long Island and/or within Farmingdale State College The deadline to apply is March 14th. The scholarship winner will be announced at the Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), which will take place March 27th-29th at Hofstra University. The scholarship is named after SBPLI’s late
founder Fred Breithut, who strongly believed that students pursuing careers in science, math, engineering, and technology is essential for our society and future workforce on Long Island. “We encourage every high school student who meets the scholarship requirements and is considering attending Farmingdale State College to apply for this

Going Red In A Big Way
The staff at St. Joseph Hospital put their hearts into the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” day this year. With each donation, staff received a “Go Red” dress pin and a “Go Red” dress cutout to inscribe the name of
a loved one with heart disease. The inscribed dresses were place on the Hear Wall of Honor as a remembrance for their loved ones. The staff enthusiasm for the event made it easy to reach their goal of $1,000.
A lecture for the staff was also held on Women’s Heart Health, which highlighted the causes of heart disease and preventative steps to take to avoid the number one killer of woman in the USA today.
Legislative Action Committee
Registration Underway Registration is now underway for the Town of Oyster Bay’s spring softball night leagues for men and women hosted by the Town’s Department of Parks, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto. “While we are still in the grips of an icy winter, residents can warm up to the thought of another exciting spring softball season,” Councilman Pinto said. “There is nothing like a great game of softball and the camaraderie of teammates.” According to Councilman Pinto, the Town of Oyster Bay’s various softball leagues are widely respected, and players look forward to the competition and exercise. “The leagues are very well organized, and players will have an opportunity to play on fields considered
to be among the finest in the nation,” Councilman Pinto said. “This program offers a great recreational and social outlet for all participants, bringing Town athletes together for night-time softball games that are competitive and fun.” Men and women’s night leagues generally play Monday through Thursday with games starting between 8 and 9 p.m., with the occasional Saturday game. “Game times and locations will vary throughout the season,” explained Councilman Joseph Pinto. Only teams with completed registration requirements will be given consideration. Any team looking to register must also submit insurance certificates (MAIL-IN ONLY) as proof
of insurance along with an endorsement of the policy. Polar Plunge Support
The Farmingdale School District’s Legislative Action Committee recently travelled to Albany to present the District’s 20142015 legislative proposals. The Committee was represented by students, teachers, administrators, community leaders and members from the District’s Board of Education and met with distinguished New York State elected officials including Senators John Flanagan and Kemp Hannon and Assemblymen Steven Englebright, Chad Lupinacci, Thomas McKevitt, Michael Montesano, Joseph Saladino, Robert Sweeney and Fred Thiele. “The goal of Farmingdale’s Legislative Action Committee is to advocate for the educational needs that our
students deserve in order to reach their full potential,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent of Schools. “The annual trip to Albany is a terrific opportunity, especially for our students, to meet with our elected officials to discuss state aid necessary to maintain our vital programs.” The Legislative Action Committee urged state officials to remove the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA) for the 2014-2015 school year. The GAP Adjustment has reduced $1 billion in state aid to Long Island schools over the last three years. The Committee advocated for the replacement of the foundation formula, which determines how much state aid is allocated to school districts; the
current formula does not take into account the high cost of living on Long Island. The Committee discussed the New York State property tax cap that will result in an annual loss of programs and services to students without mandate relief or additional state funding. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect our schools. The next two Board of Education meetings will take place on Wednesday, February 26th, and Wednesday, March 5th. On Sunday, March 2nd, polar bears are expected to be seen swimming in the chilly waters off Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay. There is no need to worry, however, because these Polar Bears are about as friendly as they come. Polar Bears are what they call the hearty and caring people who will take part in the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County, Inc. (UCPN) 10th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser. The festivities for this much anticipated event will kick off at 1 p.m. with the polar bears taking the plunge at 2 p.m. “The Polar Bear Swim is a unique and most worthwhile charity event, and I’m pleased to, again, lend the support of the Town to help ensure its success,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, who has served as an Honorary CoChairman for the event since its inception. “The program features brave
souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for UCPN and its many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone to participate and have fun.” The Supervisor went on to say that the day will include the music, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs grilled by volunteers from the Atlantic Steamer Fire Company, soup, raffles and other surprises. An indoor assembly area will also be available for the event, which will be held rain, snow or shine. The day’s proceedings will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through UCPN. “An independent, notfor-profit health agency, UCPN, has endeavored to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained Supervisor Venditto. “The
organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.” Supervisor Venditto said that, as in past years, the organizers anticipate many hardy individuals from the community taking the plunge to raise funds for UCPN. It features students from junior high school through college talking about their experiences with stuttering and what they found to be helpful. They talk openly about the ridicule they faced from classmates and how their stuttering affects their lives. “We really try to emphasize the embarrassment and frustration factor, and we think teens will relate to that,” adds Ramig. Poster Contest Underway Commemorative Poster Series and will be on exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum in October. “It is our hope that many of our region’s talented student artists will view this as an opportunity to participate in Arts Month and be featured in their first museum exhibition,” said Theresa Statz-Smith, Executive Director, Long Island Arts Alliance. “Since the submissions will be done digitally on our website, ArtsAliveLI. org, it is best suited to those who draw, paint, and specialize in graphic art or photography.” Long Island Children’s Museum President Suzanne LeBlanc announced news of the art exhibit at the Museum featuring the winning selections. “At the Children’s Museum we believe that there is a vital need for public spaces to exhibit the creative works of our neighbors. Winter Survival Tips Many hazards come with winter driving, but the possibility of being stranded may be one of the worst. If you get stranded while driving, here are some tips geared at helping you survive: Plan Your Route: Don’t use back roads to avoid traffic or save time. Take heavily traveled routes where more people can spot you. Also, main roads are the first areas that rescue workers will reach in emergencies. If you must drive, travel during the day and don’t travel alone. Tell family or friends where you are going, the route you will take and when you expect to arrive.
Stay With Your Vehicle: While it will get cold, your vehicle is your best protection against wind and exposure. Remain in your vehicle where rescuers are most likely to find you. Abandon your car only as a last resort. A single person walking through the snow is much harder to find than a stranded vehicle. Prepare Your Vehicle: Make sure your vehicle is winterized and in good driving condition. Keep your gas tank full. This will keep the fuel line from freezing and allow you to run the engine for heat for a longer time. Pack A Winter Survival
Kit: The kit should contain non-perishable food, water, warm clothes, blankets, tea light candles (for warmth), waterproof matches, flares, tools or a multi-function knife, a small mirror (for signaling), brightly colored cloth/plastic (for visibility), tow chain/strap and a small pot for melting snow (to drink). Use The Heater Sparingly: Running your engine and heater for ten minutes every hour is enough to keep you warm while also conserving fuel. While the engine is running, slightly open a downwind window for fresh air. Make sure to keep the exhaust pipe clear of
snow to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping Moving: At least once an hour, vigorously move your arms, hands, legs, feet and toes to improve circulation and keep warm. Important: Don’t exercise enough to get hot or sweaty. Wet clothes lose insulation value, making you susceptible to hypothermia. Also, avoid use of cigarettes or alcohol as these will reduce your ability to stay warm. Stay Hydrated: The keys to winter survival are to stay dry, hydrated and warm. Drink fluids sparingly over time to avoid dehydration. Don’t
put snow in your mouth as a source of liquid, always melt it first. “Eating” snow will lower your body temperature, increasing your risk of hypothermia. Make Your Vehicle Easy To Find: Tie a piece of brightly colored cloth or plastic to your antenna or hang it out of a window. When running the engine at night, turn on interior lights if you hear rescuers nearby. Rescuers can see a small glow at a considerable distance. To reduce battery drain, use emergency flashers only if you hear approaching vehicles. If the snow has stopped falling, open the hood of the car as a distress
signal. Keep the roof of your car free of snow so it’s visible from the air. Communicate: Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. Call 911 and describe your location as precisely as possible. Keep calls brief to save your battery. Sending text messages for help has the best chance of getting through while minimizing battery loss. Don’t Expect To Be Comfortable: The goal is to endure until you’re found. Remember that the keys to survival are to remain calm and patient, and to be prepared.

Mobile Ticketing The Nassau InterCounty Express (NICE) announced today that it has signed a pilot agreement with Masabi, a leader in mobile ticketing and electronic payments for transit, to bring smartphone ticketing to NICE bus riders. NICE will become among the first U.S. bus transit systems to offer smartphone ticketing to its customers featuring smartphone payment apps for both iPhone and Android. NICE’s paratransit system, known as Able-Ride, will allow customers to use the same smartphone app to pay their fares. NICE is a publicprivate operating partnership between Nassau County and Veolia Transportation. Veolia manages all aspects of the transit system under contract to the county, effectively serving as the
transit agency. With the new mobile ticketing system, riders will be able to purchase bus tickets at their convenience, and activate them as they board the vehicle. Upon boarding, riders will display to the operator a secure, visually verifiable ticket on their smartphones. For added security, mobile tickets will also feature scannable barcodes for occasional spot checks by NICE officials. In future phases of the project, NICE may install hardware that allows riders to pay by scanning a barcode, or simply bringing their smart device in close proximity to a sensor. “This project is one of several recent technology initiatives at NICE bus which will help transform the experience of riding transit in Nassau County. We believe our customers will embrace
mobile ticketing as they have in other systems around the country” said Michael Setzer, NICE Chief Executive Officer. “Our recent onboard survey revealed that nearly 70 percent of NICE riders own smartphones, suggesting that the mobile platform is a great way to connect with our customers and provide them additional convenience.” With this new initiative, NICE will dramatically expand the ease and convenience with which its customers can buy bus tickets. Another benefit is that it will speed up the boarding process. Currently, NICE riders have limited payment options: they can either pay with correct change on the bus or use the MTA-issued MetroCard. However, there is only one MTA location in Nassau County with full-
service vending machines that allow riders to buy and reload MetroCards. Over time, mobile ticketing should also help reduce fare collection costs. NICE fareboxes are antiquated, dating back to the late 1990s, and the costs of maintenance, replacement parts and cash handling are rapidly increasing. “While we will continue to coordinate with the MTA for all customers that transfer between our transit systems, we made it a priority when NICE was launched to start developing our own payment solution,” said Setzer. “We think mobile ticketing is a low cost, rapidly deployable and flexible alternative that will make it easier for many riders to pay their fare.” NICE is deploying Masabi’s JustRide product, a well tested,
end-to-end mobile ticketing and fare collection system. The award-winning product includes features such as ticket purchase, user display and easy validation together with sophisticated backend infrastructure for secure payments, ticket management, customer service, reporting and real-time analytics. Masabi currently serves 17 transportation and retail companies worldwide including Boston’s MBTA and San Diego’s MTS in the U.S. and Virgin Trains and Cross Country in the U.K. “We are delighted to be working with NICE to put a personalized ticket machine into the pocket of each of their customers, making searching for change to board the bus a thing of the past,” said Josh Robin, Vice President
– North America at Masabi. “We are excited to welcome NICE to our growing family of U.S. deployments and look forward to working with them on deploying smartphone ticketing and future payment technologies.” NICE officials plan to start beta testing with a select group of riders this spring, with full rollout this summer. Riders are encouraged to apply at www.nicebus. com to participate in the beta testing. NICE also encourages customers to take a brief survey on the site that will help NICE better understand how they currently use technology.
