A major vocation for people with disabilities is cleaning, maintenance, janitorial, landscaping and snow removal work. The Corporate Source (TCS) is a Garden City-based non profit organization, which has vendor contract relationships to provide cleaning and maintenance for many of Long Island’s courthouse facilities.

As one example, the Su olk County Court Complex in Central Islip averages visits from more than 1000 people a day, whether it is judges, employees, lawyers, plainti s or defendants. Many of these visitors would not know that this 28 acre campus is cleaned and maintained in large measure by people with disabilities from The Corporate Source. In recognized annual surveys these workers are ranked “well into the ninety percentile”, performing above industry standard.

As a logical progression, in 2000 as construction and development of the D’Amato Federal Court House was completed, the Federal government awarded a janitorial contract to The Corporate Source. By 2003, they were so confident in the work of The Corporate Source that the contract evolved into Total Facilities Management including maintenance, landscaping and snow removal. More than 30 TCS employees work alongside a variety of federal employees, including 16 federal judges. Judges have been so impressed by their work that they held a lunch for these employees to express their appreciation for their commitment and outstanding performance. Michael Kramer, CEO of The Corporate Source, said “Our workers earned credibility for this enlarged opportunity. They proved that they could deliver when given a chance to do a job.”

Mr. Kramer mentioned that often cleaning, maintenance and janitorial tasks are perceived as “jobs of last resort” marked by high turnover and

a casual attitude. In contrast he said, “The workers provided by The Corporate Source are motivated when they are given these jobs. Sometimes this is their first position so they have a desire to prove what they can do. Among the 60+ TCS employees at the court complexes in Su olk, some have been employed since TCS first got the contract more than 20 years ago. The retention rate is well above the industry average and many employees are working there multiple years.”

TCS employees appreciate the stability that comes from work. Matt is a Heavy Equipment Mechanic at the D’Amato Federal Courthouse and over the past 23 years has worked his way up through the ranks of Janitor, to Project Worker and after taking additional training at BOCES, moved into his current role as a Mechanic. Matt is thankful for the support of his managers and supervisors who motivated and encouraged him to learn new skills and expand his role. He is grateful that work has given him the ability to provide for his wife and young children.

Richard, a TCS employee since 2017, reentered the workforce as a Janitor in the Su olk County Courthouse. Work not only helps him pay his bills and save for a new car, but also gives him a sense of pride and community. Richard is glad to complete his routine tasks and jump in when additional help is needed. “The people here are the best part of my job” said Richard. “Everyone is nice and I was really glad I got this opportunity to work for TCS.” His manager regularly hears compliments about his work and positive attitude.

TCS is hiring for multiple full and part time positions in the Su olk County area. They are looking for Janitors, Groundskeepers, Landscapers and Foreman. See their website, www. thecorporatesource.org, for career opportunities or call 561-419-5613 for more information.

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.

“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty

Town

service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”

Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored

Accepting

a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2023 season. Applications must be received by March 10, 2023.

Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

For more information on how to sponsor a banner, visit www.oysterbaytown. com/herobanners to download or submit an application, or call (516) 797-4121.

New Applications

For 9/11 Walls Of Honor

Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy.

Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so

many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.”

Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered

cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness.

The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto.

Applications may be downloaded at www. oysterbaytown.com/ wallsofhonor.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday and Sunday weekend shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

“The Bethpage Air Show

We look forward to organizing a very special show for our fans this year.”

It was also announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024. Additional 2023 performers will be announced shortly.

Science Bowl Success

Farmingdale High School Places Third In Regional Science Bowl

Farmingdale’s Science Bowl club competed against several Long Island high schools in the Long Island Regional Science Bowl competition at Brookhaven National Laboratory on Friday, February 3rd, and earned third place.

The students tested

their knowledge in areas including biology, chemistry, earth and space science, energy, mathematics, and physics in the fast-paced questionand-answer tournament.

Congratulations to team members Rayan Adamjee (11), Ali Ahmad (12), Waseem Ahmad (12), Bevis

Jiang (11), Madhav Rapelli (11), and science bowl club advisor Ashley Arroyo.

More than 315,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl (NSB) since it was established in 1991, and it is one of the nation’s largest science competitions.

Ashes To Go, Ashes To Stay

ASHES TO GO

Pastor Claire Wu of the Farmingdale United Methodist Church will distribute ashes to anyone in the community

regardless of faith or denomination in front of the church at 407 Main Street on Wednesday, February 22nd from 11:45AM to 12:30PM. All

are welcome.

ASHES TO STAY

Our church service will be at 7:00PM, all are welcome there, too!

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are the first line of defense-every level of the home needs to have properly working

smoke alarms. It’s also important to install one in every sleeping area. Test each smoke alarm

once a month. For more information, visit www. homesafetycouncil.org.

No Kid Hungry Awards $20,000 To The American Academy Of Pediatrics New York Chapter

2 To Combat Child Hunger On Long Island

No Kid Hungry announced that it has awarded $20,000 to the American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 to train Long Island pediatricians on how to screen for the effects of food insecurity and connect families in need with food assistance.

One in 7 children face hunger in New York. As trusted family confidants, pediatricians have unique insight into the lives of children and families. In their first five years, the average child visits a pediatrician 20 times.

The American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 will use these trainings to develop and implement a screening tool for food insecurity to triage all pediatric patients. The chapter will host nutrition workshops for parents and patients as well as identify family advisors to support and advocate for patients who are facing food insecurity.

“There is no voice that families trust more than their pediatrician. We are so

proud to be partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics here in New York to mobilize doctors in the fight against child hunger,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. “Pediatricians are usually the first to notice a change in a child’s health. This additional training will help them screen children for signs of food insecurity and provide families with more resources to secure help.”

“Nutrition plays a critical role in children’s overall health and development, and pediatricians are here to partner with families to ensure they have access to healthy food,” said Moira Szliagyi, MD, PhD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Recently highlighted in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, this grant is part of a national effort to provide pediatricians with the additional training needed to screen for food insecurity. No Kid Hungry will provide and offer three different learning

models to pediatricians based on each physician’s time capacity and work schedule. Pediatricians will be able to refer patients’ families to grocery benefits like SNAP and WIC, as well as other local and state resources for families through these learning models, which are the following:

A Self-Driven Online Learning Site called PediaLink will offer training materials that physicians can use to learn more about screening and referrals on their own time. An Interactive Training Model lets pediatricians receive training through a selfdirective, interactive series of programs.

A Live Virtual Training Model called the “Extension for Community Health Outcomes” will enable physicians to receive handson training.
