All Kids Fair Each year, the All Kids Fair brings fun and different reasons for kids and their families to attend their annual event. The April 29th All Kids Fair will continue in this tradition. QuackerJack, the Long Island Ducks’ mascot, will visit to the delight of children across Long Island. In addition, the lovely Alexa Cox, Miss Long Island Teen 2018, will be available for a meetand-greet.

The All Kids Fair is a Long Island “happening” each spring. Since moving to its larger venue, the Hilton Long Island/ Huntington (also known as the Huntington Hilton), the Fair has been able to accommodate a bounce house, petting zoo, and additional vendors and classes, which was enjoyed by 2,500 people this past April. Children will enjoy a large number of additional

activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 ½ foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair

offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers!

Birthday Bash. Ganimet Brija of Coram, who attended the event in 2017, enthusiastically shared “My son had a blast, and everyone was so helpful and friendly.” Noshina Amhad of Valley Stream added, “I really love this event…already waiting for [the] next event.” Attendees who like to “pay forward” to charitable groups are encouraged to bring used and new books and money for donation to

The FIRST® Tech Challenge season – dubbed FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm) – will culminate this weekend with the SBPLI Long Island Championship tournament. Presented locally by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), FIRST® Tech Challenge inspires students age 12 to 18 to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Twenty-four teams (noted below) from across Long Island will compete in the event at Smithtown High School West on Sunday, February 11th. The participating teams earned the opportunity to compete during one of five regional qualifying tournaments that took place at Lynbrook, Center Moriches and Sewanhaka High Schools throughout the month of January.

Working alongside adult mentors, more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries have spent the last several months designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” During the FIRST Tech Challenge events, students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Teams work to score

For the first-time ever, Farmingdale High School hosted the nationally renowned VEX Robotics Competition. The purpose of the competition is to explore innovation through robotics, celebrate student accomplishments, and encourage friendly competition. The Farmingdale robotics teams have

consistently qualified for the New York State Championship, and have advanced to the VEX World Championship for the past three years. The competition included 36 teams of students, testing their robots against each other and competing to advance to the regional competition. Farmingdale

Robotics sent three teams, VEXcalibur, the Dalerbots, and the Robodalers. All three qualified for the quarterfinals, and the Dalerbots advanced to the semifinals. Judges selected the Dalerbots for the Design Award, which qualifies them to participate in the Southern New York State Championship in March.

ROBOTICS COMPETITION - Farmingdale High School Robotics Team students work on their robot during the VEX Robotics regional competition, hosted for the first time at Farmingdale High School. Last year the team qualified to enter the 2017 VEX Worlds - VEX Robotics Competition as a result of the District’s commitment to providing an environment of academic excellence for students.

Life & Legacy

Students at Farmingdale’s Northside Elementary School were taught about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther and his significance to American culture and history. They learned about the history of slavery, the civil rights movement, and King’s vision for a world where all races and creeds

are embraced equally. Children read, sang, and discussed the poem “Freedom, Freedom,” and shared their own experiences with bias. They also discussed practical ways to be a good friend, like playing with others, helping friends when they’re sad, and stepping in when they hear someone

speaking hate. At the end of the lesson, students traced and colored their hands to show that brothers and sisters can be all kinds of colors. Teacher, Christina Pattay, assembled the hands into a peace symbol to represent Dr. King’s ideals of peace and love.

Allergy And Dirty Ducts (NAPSI)—Allergies are nothing to sneeze at but you can make your home more comfortable for people who have allergies and improve your indoor air quality—by cleaning in an often forgotten place. Indoor air quality can be a big concern for many families. After all, in a

typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust— including dangerous chemicals and other pollutants—is created annually through everyday living. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and recirculated as much as seven times a day. Over time, this leads

to built-up contaminants in the ductwork. Since your heating and cooling system is the lungs of your home, you want to keep it clear. Oldest Tree The oldest living tree, 4,700-year-old “Methuselah” grows in White Mountains, Calif.

LIFE & LEGACY - Farmingdale School District students at Northside Elementary School take a group picture after singing “Freedom, Freedom,” a poem about Dr. Martin Luther King’s ideals of peace, love and liberty. The lesson was part of a District initiative to familiarize students with Dr. King’s ideas, the history of slavery, the civil rights movement, and how students can be inclusive of all races and creeds in their own lives.

Did You Know?

QR is the New FYI inside a square grid on a white background - they’re read by an imaging device, typically a smartphone with a scanning app. QR codes were invented in 1994 in Japan by Denso Wave (a subsidiary of Toyota) for the purpose of tracking vehicles during production, but their use has been continually expanding. The technology sparked an

idea for Assistant Principal Cheryl DePierro, who was looking for a way to keep students up-to-date on all the after-school activities at the middle school. She generated a unique QR code, then attached it to an After-School Offerings Google Document, which is updated regularly. Laminated flyers with the QR code are posted throughout the school,

allowing students to scan the code week after week to check for updates. Fast and convenient, it provides users with the most current schedules for afterschool clubs, athletics, peer assistance, miniworkshops, and Student Leader Spark Sessions. After this years’ test run, the Howitt Administration plans to explore other ways to use and grow

QR code technology to communicate news and other events happening throughout the school. They also plan to share the QR code with parents, providing them with a handy, at-home reference tool that they can use to stay informed of their children’s schedules.

FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 14, 2018 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

There’s a new way for students to keep up to date on the STAY AFTER agenda at Howitt Middle School. It’s a Dynamic QR (Quick Response) code - the two-dimensional barcode that’s been gaining popularity worldwide. You’ve undoubtedly seen them tucked in the corners of consumer adverting. Consisting of black squares - arranged

Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

338713N0214

LONG ISLAND PET EXPO MARCH 3 & 4, 2018

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

GETTING SKELETAL - First-graders at each of the elementary schools in the Plainedge School District have been immersed in a science unit about the human body. Within that unit, students explored the skeletal system and learned how some bones help protect body parts while others provide support. They then engaged in hands-on STEAM lessons that would reinforce the subject matter and bring it to life. Photo courtesy of: Plainedge School District

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. You can visit their website at www.HopeChildrensFund.org or contact Kevin Mann at KevinMannMail@gmail. com to learn more and view photos of

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Volunteers will work one-on-one with children from K-6 with homework, reading and writing. Please contact Johanna Velasquez at 516.558.7020 or at office@cchoben.org to volunteer! I will be the first to admit that I do not like to dwell on the past, yet unless we confront our past it is very difficult to take corrective actions and make appropriate decisions towards our future. Acknowledging what is wrong is the only true way to move forward. Until we come to terms with the sin of our past we will never fully let it go, but always have an excuse, or bury it down deep where we hope our thoughts never force us to dwell on it again. Burying sin and not confronting it is NOT how you can heal the brokenness or the damage that sin causes both to you and the people around you. Sin breaks relationships, forgiveness heals them.

Our Lenten journey this year is about breaking the cycle of sin. Rather than burying our head in the sand or making excuses for sinful thoughts, words and actions, let us acknowledge what we have done and seek to heal and repair the damage, not cover it up. Lent is a time to self-reflect, it is a journey we take through the spiritual wilderness to be transformed by God’s love and forgiveness. Surround yourself with that love and forgiveness these next forty days and be transformed.

Lenten Season

If anyone reading this article is like the Pastor of St. Luke’s church then you are about six weeks into 2018 and have already broken some of your New Year resolutions, if you even started them! Maybe you are more disciplined and have stuck to them more than I have. Either way the Lenten journey that begins on February 14th with Ash Wednesday is a forty day opportunity to reflect on our past and decide on our future.

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

(NAPSI)—Did you know that women are at greater risk for blindness and vision problems? The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic conditions, and not smoking can lower your

risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Talk to your eye care provider about the appropriate type of protective eyewear for your needs. Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet

rays. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can increase your risk for getting an eye disease like cataract or age-related macular degeneration, which is a progressive eye disease leading to blindness. When purchasing sunglasses, look for those that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. These steps can help keep your eyes healthy and prevent vision loss and blindness from eye disease. For more information, visit www.nei.nih.gov/ hvm. Perserverance In the realm of ideas, everything depends on enthusiasm; in the real world, all rests on perseverance. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
