$23,000 a year in savings* from lighting upgrades means more of this for Long Island.

For rebate information, visit PSEGLINY.com/Business

When the nonprofit Canine Companions requested a free energy assessment, we discovered that installing LED fixtures and other energy efficiency measures could save them nearly $2,000 a month. And with available PSEG Long Island rebates, the installation was affordable. Today, those changes have meant more funds for the mission of providing service dogs to Long Islanders with disabilities. And that means a better Long Island for us all. *Actual

Town Awards $1 Million In Grants To Small Businesses; Encourages More To Apply

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with Councilwoman Michele Johnson, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh, Town Clerk Rich LaMarca and Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato to officially award the first $1 million dollars of grant monies available to local businesses and not for profits through the Oyster Bay Forward Program. Oyster Bay Forward offers up to $5,000 to small businesses and non-profits finally impacted by the COVID pandemic, with a total of $4.5 million available.

“After a year-plus long pandemic and now facing an economic recession, small businesses need help and we’re pleased to offer these Federal funds to boost small business owners and not for profits,” said Supervisor Saladino. “There is still funding available, and we encourage all business owners and non-profits to apply for funding to help them recover losses from the pandemic and keep their operations moving

forward in the Town of Oyster Bay.”

The ‘Oyster Bay Forward’ Grant Program is open to businesses that employ up to 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees as well as sole proprietors. Additional eligibility criteria:

o Applicant must be the principal (i.e. majority owner);

o Entity must be a forprofit business, or 501c3 or 501c19 non-profit organization, with annual revenue between $35,000 and $5 million;

o At least 60 percent of non-profit expenses must have been programmatic in 2019;

o Applicant must be in operation at the time of application and have been in operation prior to January 1, 2021;

o Must have fewer than 50 full-time equivalent W-2 employees;

o Certification and demonstration of economic hardship due to pandemic; and

o Not be in default or arrears on past or current federal and state financing or funding programs.

“Grant monies can be utilized for a variety of purposes, including expenses that helped mitigate hardships caused by the pandemic,” said Councilwoman Vicki Walsh. “These could include the purchase of inventory and supplies, rent payments, utilities, property taxes, lease or purchase of equipment, as well as operating and emergency maintenance. We encourage all businesses and non-profits to sign up today.”

Applications are processed through the National Development Council (NDC) – who was retained by the Town to administer the Oyster Bay Forward Grant Program. Additional eligibility criteria, including required documents, as well as applications for eligible business and non-profit organizations are available at TOBForward.com, where interested parties can also view an informative webinar further detailing the application process.

Howitt Heimlich Hero Farmingdale Sixth Grader Saves Fellow Classmate

A student at Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale saved the life of a classmate by performing the Heimlich Maneuver.

Anthony Agrillo and Daniel Kelly sat down to eat lunch during fifth period on Tuesday, January 24th. It was midterms week at school, and both boys looked forward to a relaxing lunch/recess break. Daniel had attended Saltzman East Memorial, and Anthony went to Northside before entering Howitt Middle School this year. They became friends over the summer, having met through the Farmingdale Hawks Football program. As Daniel ate his lunch, he locked eyes with Anthony, who had started banging on the table and pointing

to his throat.

“It all happened so fast,” said Daniel Kelly. “I got up, threw my arms around him, and started performing the Heimlich. Within seconds a piece of food shot out of his mouth.”

A large piece of cheese from a mozzarella stick was the culprit. With his airway cleared, Anthony’s breathing returned to normal.

“He didn’t hesitate,” said Anthony Agrillo. “Daniel is a loyal friend, he saw I was in trouble, and he acted.”

The Heimlich Hero program was taught to all Howitt Middle School students during health class earlier this school year. Students watched a fifteen-minute video that taught them how to recognize the signs of

choking and respond with the Heimlich Maneuver.

Howitt Middle School Assistant Principal Cheryl DePierro was motivated to bring the Heimlich Heroes program to our buildings after a choking incident in the teacher’s lounge last year.

“It doesn’t matter how tall or strong you are; everyone should learn the Heimlich,” said Cheryl DePierro. “The Heimlich Heroes lesson was easy to follow and gave our students the confidence and skills needed to handle an emergency. I couldn’t be prouder.”

Farmingdale School

District plans to recognize our Howitt Heimlich Heroes at the next Board of Education meeting.

Leaves Can Stain Exterior Surfaces

Leaves that fall from trees can be a marvel to behold, but leaves can stain exterior surfaces when they eventually settle on vehicles, concrete driveways, patios, and other surfaces, become wet and/or are not cleaned away in a timely fashion. Leaf stains are caused by tannins in the leaves.

The pigments can be absorbed by porous materials like concrete and leave stains behind. While these stains may wash away over time, homeowners may prefer a faster way to get rid of unsightly stains. To remove moderate leaf stains, mix oxygen bleach with hot water and apply to stains

using a scrub brush. Dark stains may require a tougher cleanser, such as one that contains trisodium phosphate. Some homeowners find success using a pressure washer to clean away leaf stains, while others rely on commercial leaf-stain removers.

From The Desk Of Mayor Ralph Ekstrand

On January 18th, 2023, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting celebration at Necromantic Brew Co. - the first fully gluten-free tasting room and brewery in New York. Ralph Mandarino and Jesse Silano, the owners of Necromantic Brew Co., were welcomed to our thriving Main Street. They experienced delays since leasing the space in February 2020 and officially opened October 28th, 2022, Halloween weekend.

Necromantic Brew Co. is located at 253 Main Street in Farmingdale Village. The storefront was formerly a bakery, Rocky & Sons, and a furniture showroom. In the 80’s & 90’s Ralph’s Dad had a bakery, “Love to Bake” - across the street, next to Moby Drugs (now Stuff-aBagel). Both Ralph and Jesse have Farmingdale roots, Ralph is an engineer and grew up in Farmingdale, and Jesse went to College here.

It’s a hobby come true for the two friends, Ralph and Jesse, who watched horror movies on weekends. Ralph has a gluten intolerance and they began brewing craft beer in Ralph’s basement in 2018. The beer is naturally gluten free, using ancient, alternative grains. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself, congratulations and wishes for much success!

In December 2022, employers across the United States listed over 18,000 open positions for IT support specialists, according to CompTIA’s monthly “Tech Jobs Report.” This expressed demand on the part of potential employers is echoed by the disability community, which has expressed tremendous interest in the IT sector.

TCS has partnered in a key initiative with CompTIA to train and certify people with disabilities for lucrative positions in the IT field. The “TCS IT Training and A+ Certification Program” is a comprehensive 13 week program with instruction provided virtually with individualized support for program participants that is provided by TCS’ Vocational Rehabilitation unit. The structure of the training is adapted to meet the needs and learning

styles of the participants. At the conclusion of the virtual classroom, instruction students will have the opportunity to earn two professional certifications – CompTIA IT Fundamentals, an introduction to basic IT knowledge and skills, and CompTIA A+, the industry standard for establishing a career in IT. The objective is to teach marketable IT skills, along with appropriate work behaviors, to ensure that graduates will be qualified for jobs such as: help desk technicians, desktop support people and field technicians who assist with hardware and equipment setup.

At their 2022 Long Island SummIT Awards Dinner, The Long Island Software & Technology Network recognized TCS for its innovative e orts and leadership to recruit people with disabilities to fulfill IT sector jobs.

On February 28, 2023, the second class coming through the TCS IT Training & Certification Program will be graduating. These graduates who are mainly from Nassau and Su olk counties are eager to begin their careers!

One of the initial graduates, Ayisat, expressed that she was thrilled to take advantage of this opportunity to further her career. She had been working for TCS as a Telephone Operator for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan when she was approached by her manager about the opportunity to participate in the IT Training Program. After successfully completing the program and obtaining her certifications, Ayisat secured a job as a Help Desk Technician. She is now working remotely and excited about her career potential.

Do you know of a company that would benefit by hiring one of their IT Program graduates? Would you like to learn more about this program? Please contact Ruth-Ann Gater at Ruth-Ann. Gater@thecorporatesource.org if so and stay tuned for next week’s article to learn more about TCS.

Free Musical Performances At Local Libraries For February And March Enjoy The Sounds Of The Beatles,

Music Of The 50’S & 60’S And More

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced that the Distinguished Artists Concert Series will continue through May 2023 with free performances at local libraries throughout the Town.

“The Distinguished Artists Concert Series provides free musical and dance programs for the enjoyment of our residents,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I encourage residents to take advantage of these wonderful performances offered by the Town for free at local libraries.”

Scheduled performances for February and March include:

Long Island Cares, Inc.,

The Harry Chapin Food Bank gratefully acknowledge receipt of a total of 102 pounds of food donated by FitteamLA’s Dream Team.

Thank you for joining them in their mission to ensure that more Long Island children, families, and pets do not go hungry through our COVID-19 relief efforts. In addition to distributing more than 17 million pounds

of food to nearly 600 member agencies in the first 10 months of the pandemic, Long Island Cares seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population that benefits from their services.

Many times hunger and poverty are hard to see. By outward appearances, we may not know a family is struggling or that a school

age child does not have enough food at home. People needing help are often filled with shame when they seek assistance and no matter how kind the food pantry worker may be, the worried parent keeps thinking, “I can’t feed my kids.”

On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, they are truly grateful for your support.

Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce that residents interested in having their children participate in the 2023 Summer Recreation Program can now upload necessary documents and materials for review in advance of the final registration period. This process is mandatory prior to registration this spring and will be performed fully online. This year’s Summer Recreation Program will once again include fullday options as well as the traditional program for children ages 4 through 12. Space is limited at each facility.

“The Town’s Summer Recreation Program features great summer fun for children at six of our Town parks, with activities

Pre-Registration Period Now Open For 2023 Town Summer Recreation Program

including arts and crafts, various games, themed days, water fun, scavenger hunts and so much more,” said Supervisor Saladino.

“To help streamline the registration process this year, residents will be able to sign-up their children online this spring, and can begin pre-registration today!”

All registrations for Summer Recreation will performed online this year. In an effort to simplify the process, the Town’s Parks Department is now accepting all necessary documentation, including proof of residency, child’s birth certificates, recent physicals etc. to be uploaded to a portal on the Town’s website prior to the final registration period this spring. This process is mandatory and ends on March 15th.

Once all documentation is properly uploaded, parents/guardians will receive notification of approval to register, as well as directions for online registration.

How to upload materials (note: pre-registration does not guarantee a spot in this year’s Summer Recreation Program. Parents will need to perform final registration this spring)

• Parents/guardians can visit www.oysterbaytown. com/parksportal

• Select ‘My Account’ on the top right corner and log-in or create a new account (if your child was registered for the 2022 Summer Program, you already have an account, however documents must be uploaded)

• After logging in, select ‘My Account,’ then Household & Member.

Confirm all family members are listed. If needed, select ‘Add Family member’ at bottom of page and add a child or guardian to the household. Then SAVE

• Select DOCUMENT UPLOAD from the portal menu. Each document must be uploaded as a separate file (make sure all scanned documents are legible)

o Required documents:

o Proof of residency (tax or utility bill)

o Child’s Birth Certificate

o Child’s Immunization Records (for full-day campers only)

o Child’s recent physical (for full-day campers only)

Additional information, assistance and instructions are available by visiting the Town’s website at www.oysterbaytown.com/

summerrecreation or by calling the Recreation Office at (516) 797-7945.

“We know many of our youngsters can’t wait for the warm weather and all the fun they have at the Town’s Summer Recreation Program,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

“With full-day options again available at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, as well as our traditional programs at Ellsworth Allen Park in Farmingdale, Harry Tappen Beach in Glen Head and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay, we look forward to another successful summer of fun!”

The mandatory preregistration period, during which interested parents/

guardians can upload documents and required materials for registration, is open now through March 15th. Submission of materials does not guarantee a spot in the 2023 program – parents must complete their registration this spring when final registration opens. Parents will receive an email from the Recreation Division confirming that all documents have been received, as well as directions on how to complete registration. All registration will take place online. For more information, visit www. oysterbaytown.com/ summerrecreation or call the Town’s Recreation Office at (516) 797-7945.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County Kick-Off Cookie Season

Hometown Heroes Recognition Applications Now Available

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Steve Labriola announced that the Town is now accepting applications for the 2023 Hometown Heroes’ Community Recognition Program. This initiative recognizes the service and sacrifice of the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces – both living and deceased – who are current or former Town of Oyster Bay residents.

GIRL SCOUTS OF SUFFOLK COUNTY KICK-OFF COOKIE SEASON -

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) is excited to announce that the Girl Scout Cookie Program is running now through April 17, 2023. To learn more about the Girl Scout Cookie Program and how to support local Girl Scouts, visit: https://www.gssc.us/en/cookies/ about-girl-scout-cookies.html.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) is excited to announce that the Girl Scout Cookie Program is running now through April 17, 2023. For more than 100 years, the Girl Scout Cookie Program has allowed girls to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills. All proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Season support local Girl Scouts by expanding their opportunities for new experiences and activities.

“Every Girl Scout that participates in our Girl Scout Cookie Program develops invaluable entrepreneurial experience while increasing their confidence from an early age,” said Tammy Severino, Girl Scouts of Suffolk County President and CEO. “This program allows girls to learn professional and financial literacy skills while earning funds that will go directly to their troops and community to grant new

opportunities.”

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is the largest girlled entrepreneurial program in the world and helps Girl Scouts reach goals that power endless opportunities and adventures. Within the program, girls can create a personalized page on the Digital Cookie platform— which allows girls to offer an online option to purchase cookies. Throughout the season, local troops and Girl Scouts will also be setting up in-person booth sales held across Suffolk County.

Booth Sales allow Girl Scouts to engage with their community while they gain early business experience and progress in leadership. Each booth is designed and created by the girls in the troop, using their creativity and artistic ability to construct their unique booth. Girls gain experience managing inventory, handling

customer transactions, creating displays, and much more. Booth Sale season starts February 3rd. To find the nearest Booth Sale, visit the Girl Scout Cookie Finder to support your local troop.

To learn more about the Girl Scout Cookie Program and how to support local Girl Scouts, visit: https://www. gssc.us/en/cookies/aboutgirl-scout-cookies.html.

About Girl Scouts of Suffolk County: The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County is one of the largest youthserving agencies on Long Island, serving over 15,000 members dedicated to the mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. For more information about Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, please call (631) 543-6622 or visit www.gssc.us.

“My Town Board colleagues and I were amazed by the outpouring of support this program has received from residents, businesses and local heroes,” said Councilman Labriola. “We are proud to return this important initiative to our communities and look forward to further recognizing our veterans, active duty service members, and their families for their commitment to defend our freedoms and democracy.”

Banners bearing the nominated individual’s name, rank, photograph and area of service will be unveiled throughout selected park facilities across the Town of Oyster Bay in the months leading up to Veterans Day in November. Any interested individual or organization

who would wish to sponsor a banner can remit $75 to sponsor the production of a banner. No profit is made from this program. Once the banners are displayed, the Town will maintain the banners, and will remain on display until Veterans Day, where they will then be taken down to avoid any inclement winter weather and returned to the service family or their loved ones. Those who sponsored a banner last year are reminded to submit a new application in order to be included in the 2023 season. Applications must be received by March 10, 2023.

Supervisor Saladino added, “This is an especially meaningful way to honor those who bravely and selflessly served our nation. Together as a community we will honor the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces who sacrificed a great deal for our nation, as well as many local veterans who continue to serve our community and their fellow veterans through advocacy efforts.”

For more information on how to sponsor a banner, visit www.oysterbaytown. com/herobanners to download or submit an application, or call (516) 797-4121.

Listening To Jazz Music

The New Orleans Musicians Clinic reports that listening to jazz music can expand blood vessels by up to 30 percent.

Widening of blood vessels increases blood flow and lowers blood pressure. Maintaining a

healthy blood pressure is important, as the Mayo Clinic notes that unchecked high blood pressure can lead to complications such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and/or dementia.
