abilities or just skating recreationally, these ‘Learn to Skate’ lessons may be just what you are looking for,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Registration for Series 4 (March 6th through April 29th) begins on Monday, February 13th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126.”

The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels.

The program is for eight weeks with the exception of Sundays. Classes are for six weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length.

For residents, the fee is $149 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $189.

Culture of Kindness

During the week of January 23rd, all three elementary schools in the Plainedge School District participated in the 2017 Great Kindness Challenge.

The international challenge, which reaches more than five million students in 61 countries, asks schools to empower

its students to create a culture of kindness.

Throughout the week, each of the Plainedge schools held different activities to promote kindness.

One of the activities at Eastplain Elementary School was for each class to participate in a mannequin challenge, with the scenes

I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way.

This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others.

After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all.

To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs.

I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process.

But it doesn’t matter.

There’s no rush where memories are concerned.

They should be carefully recollected, and savored.

Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways.

And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

The Farmingdale School District recently hosted a food collection drive at Farmingdale High School to collect food for local families in need.

The food drive, ‘Hunger Doesn’t Vacation,’ was part of an ongoing District

initiative intended to give students a platform to organize charitable activities and be involved in their community in a meaningful, productive way. During the food drive students collected hundreds of cans of soup,

dry pasta, tomato sauce and other nonperishable foods.

Along with tangibly helping local families, the program also helped teach students about the unfortunate epidemic of hunger in America.
