Despite an increased knowledge base and laws, such as the Americans With Disabilities Act, the overwhelming number of people with disabilities are either unemployed or underemployed. In America alone, roughly 61 million adults live with a disability. Today, about 1 in 6 American children are diagnosed with a developmental disability and they then age out of most public programming when they become 21. With less to do each day and having fewer prospects for employment, these young adults often become socially isolated and depressed.

Sometimes, employers may have misconceptions which make them reluctant to hire a person with disabilities. TCS works to change perceptions to show employers the benefits of an inclusive workforce. Given the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and capabilities, these employees show dependability, honesty, tenacity and dedication to doing the best job possible. Several TCS workers have received awards and recognition for their achievements and outstanding performance on the job.

TCS employs nearly 400 people with disabilities in the greater New York tristate region, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, providing outsourcing services to several federal, state and

Town Leaders Denounce Housing Plan

Threatening Long Island Suburbs

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino joined with his partners in Nassau County government, Supervisor Jen DeSena of North Hempstead and Supervisor Don Clavin of Hempstead, to denounce an illconceived progressive proposal that would impact Long Island suburbs and single-family home zoning. The latest proposal by Governor Hochul –seemingly a repeat of last year’s plan to turn suburban neighborhoods into overcrowded urban centers – would result in thousands of apartments

and high density housing flooding every community, as well as spot zoning in which large scale apartment buildings could pop up next to singlefamily homes.

“We must save our suburbs from this illconceived plan as it would overcrowd classrooms, greatly increase traffic and cars parked on our streets, strain emergency services and threaten the environment,” said Supervisor Saladino. “While some Albany leaders want to blame the local of affordable housing for the mass migration leaving our

State, we all know the real reason people are fleeing New York is crushing taxes, rising crime and government overreach which threatens individual rights.”

The three Town Supervisors joined local neighbors to voice their concerns of how the Governor’s urbanization plan would negatively impact the environment, traffic, parking, emergency services, police protection, local utilities and schools. Do You Have A GPS Plan For 2023?

Last month I wrote about starting the year on a strong note. My advice included reviewing your goals from last year, organizing your business and home, and moving all your correspondence to the digital world.

Today, I want to share something I learned a few months ago; how to write a GPS plan to help you achieve your goals in 2023. To be successful in business, you must continue to learn and grow. The month-long workshop I took helped me create a roadmap for success and identified potential obstacles that I might run into along the way. Here are a few of the key takeaways:

1) Have a Strategic Goal for December 31st: Where do you want to be with your business at the end of the year? Write down specific, measurable goals (e.g., revenue, profit, number of items sold). This exercise helped me visualize what success will look like on 12/31/23.

2) Write Your GPS Plan:

It’s the same idea as using your phone when you need to drive somewhere that you haven’t been to before. When you get into the car, you don’t put your phone away, you put it on the dashboard and follow every direction. Write your strategic goal at the top of a page, then include everything you will need to do during the year to hit that goal. This includes sales, expenses, finding new customers, opening a new

location, buying equipment, using social media, etc. Once you have everything written down and broken out by month, you have a GPS plan for your business. The key is to follow it! Don’t put it in a filing cabinet.

3) Identify Obstacles. In my workshop, we played something called the “What If” game. We had to write down 10 things that kept us up at night. For example, what if…my building burned down? What if…my computers were hacked? What if…the housing market crashed? For every question, we had to write a response on how we would handle it. After I was done, I wrote “Emergency Response Plan” on the front of my paper. Now, if something bad happens, I won’t panic. I’ll know what to do.

It helps to have fewer surprises in business, and to know where I want to be at the end of the year. It means a lot less stress and a lot more focus on what I love to do.

The American Heart Association Cites Research Showing The Health Benefits Of Regular Walking

Whether you’re taking a leisurely stroll through your neighborhood or a power-walk in the park, the American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, says taking part in physical activity is one of the best ways to manage stress, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke and boost your mood.

Improved technology and the growing popularity of fitness applications, electronic wearables and step counters have made counting steps an easy way to count health benefits, as noted through a growing body of scientific research. A study presented at the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2021 (EPI), found that:

•Study participants who took more steps in short spurts lived longer, regardless of how many steps they had in longer, uninterrupted bouts. The benefits leveled off at about 4,500 steps a day in short spurts.

•Compared to no daily steps, each initial increase of 1,000 steps a day was associated with a 28% decrease in death during the follow-up period.

•A 32% decrease in death was noted in participants who took more than 2,000 steps daily in uninterrupted bouts.

Middle-aged people who walked the most steps-perday had a 43% lower risk of diabetes and a 31% lower risk of high blood pressure, compared to those with the fewest steps, according to research presented at the Association’s 2020 EPI Conference. For women in the study, each 1,000-step interval resulted in a 13% lower risk of obesity, and those with the highest step count were 61% less likely

Fundraising is vital to the survival of many nonprofit organizations. Charity watchdog groups like Charity Navigator suggest nonprofits should aspire to spend less than 10 percent of their budgets on fundraising. That can be a tall task and underscores the need for charities to find creative, cost-effective ways to raise funds.

Counting steps doesn’t have to be part of a structured exercise program. Increasing your everyday activity, like parking slightly further from your destination, doing some extra housework or

yardwork and even walking your dog can all add up to more steps and better health.”

The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. You can knock that out in just 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. And every minute of moderate to vigorous activity counts toward your goal.

Arnett points out that walking indoors at home, in a gym or even a mall can be easy ways to get beneficial physical activity. However, research indicates that being outdoors in areas rich with trees, shrubs and grass (i.e., a higher level of greenness) may help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease.

“Unfortunately, many people do not have access to safe walking trails or adequate green space. The American Heart Association continues to advocate for policy changes that make it easier for people to have access to safe places to walk, exercise and play, as well as sustainable transportation options that integrate walking, bicycling and wheelchair use,” Arnett said. “The easier it is for people to engage in physical activity in all aspects of their daily life, the more likely we are to achieve healthier, longer lives for everyone.”

Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. However, a recent study from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activitydriven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide. Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

Livebrary, consisting of 56 libraries in Suffolk County, is #13 of all public library consortia, one of 129 public library systems worldwide and third in New York that surpassed one million checkouts last calendar year (complete list here).

The Public Libraries of Suffolk County have

been providing readers 24/7 access to e-books and audiobooks for several years through the awardwinning Libby app, the library reading app created by OverDrive. The large collection serves readers of all ages and interests, and usage has grown every year.
