Plainedge Public Schools Plainedge Public Schools Plainedge Public Schools Online Kindergarten nline Kindergarten Registration Registration Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Girls Softball Team Tournament for players ages 10 to 12 on Saturday, April 7th and Sunday, April 8th at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. “The tournament is a great pre-season warmup for the girls and an excellent way to help them prepare for a competitive spring season,” Supervisor Saladino said. “Many quality teams are expected to participate, so the games are sure to be exciting and competitive.”

Spots in the tournament are limited, so team coaches and managers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

“Fields in the Town of Oyster Bay are among the finest in the nation, so each team will truly appreciate the professional atmosphere and high caliber of play,” Supervisor Saladino said. “It will be an outstanding experience for coaches and players alike.”

The Tournament will be run by the Town’s Parks

Department, Recreation Division.

To register, each team must submit a registration form including the team roster, check or money order made out to the Town of Oyster Bay, and an insurance certificate listing the Town of Oyster

Bay as additional insured.

The cost is $625 per team.

Journeying into Territory Did you know that Americans aren’t legally permitted to own an eagle feather unless they’re of Native American ancestry?

That’s just one of the many interesting things that the fourth-grade class learned during a recent in-house field trip at Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School.

The gym was converted into a mini-museum, with an authentic longhouse the children could walk through and touch. The workshop was presented

by Cherokee native, Jamie Reason, who brought an abundance of indigenous treasures for the kids to experience.

The educational display included animal skins, a healer’s mask, a corn pounder, and an Iroquois strawberry gathering basket.

Mr. Reason demonstrated the item’s use, and dressed several students in traditional clothing.

Sharpening Math Skills Farmingdale School District organized an opportunity for students at Albany Avenue Elementary School to sharpen their math skills using an online mathematics learning tool called Dreambox.

The platform

measures each student’s mathematical strengths and weaknesses, adapts lessons to meet their needs, and enables them to learn at their own pace. It also empowers teachers to differentiate lessons for the entire class, and provides

real-time feedback.

The lesson was part of the district’s initiatives to use technology to enhance learning at all levels, help students reach their full potential, and prepare them for future challenges.

Rotational Arts Exhibit Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino invites residents to enjoy the Town’s 44th annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program. The program allows local artists to display their work in local libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly “rotational” basis.

“Through this program, local businesses around the Town get the opportunity to join in supporting local artists, while providing patrons with the pleasure of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“This program not only features the diverse works of new artists, but also some of the most accomplished artists from the area.”

said that Rotational Art Exhibit Program allows local businesses a unique opportunity to position themselves at the intersection of industry and art. “This integration ultimately benefits both sectors and helps spread a passion for the arts,” Supervisor Saladino said.

“I think we all benefit when the arts are more effectively incorporated into the everyday lives of our residents.”

While the 2018 is schedule is set, the Town of Oyster Bay is already looking for new artists and businesses to participate in next year’s program.

“In the Fall season, novice and experienced artists will have a chance to see their artwork approved and entered into ‘rotation’ where it will be displayed

throughout the Town of Oyster Bay in 2019,” Supervisor Saladino said.

The program is free for both artists and businesses. Registration Upcoming Residents looking for a fun activity to keep themselves fit and active during the colder months are invited to register for the Town of Oyster Bay’s Pilates class, a 10-week program beginning on Saturday March 3rd. The weekly sessions will be held Saturdays thereafter from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. The Town’s Pilates program is for individuals 18 years of age or older and will be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room located at Bethpage Community Park.

“Pilates is a mind-body intervention that focuses on strength, core stability, flexibility, muscle control, posture and breathing,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “It is also a low impact workout that is easy on your joints. If you haven’t tried this unique form of exercise, this Town program may just be the perfect opportunity to experience its many benefits.”

Registration for the Pilates class will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center (1001 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage) on Saturday, February 3rd from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Monday, February 5th

from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Wednesday, February 7th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The fee for the program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” . . . this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island.

Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry that reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

They operate a very impressive Food Outreach weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.

LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile manner because the Gospel

tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone.

If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events.

William Geandomenico is very proud to be a World War II veteran who served his country at the age of eighteen years old. He has shared his war experiences with the community.

His map of the World War II invasion of Europe is displayed at the Museum of American Armor in Bethpage. In May of 2017, his medals, army uniform and army equipment were displayed at the Farmingdale Public Library. Also, he visits with middle school students in the community to share his war experiences and answer their questions.

William Joseph Geandomenico served in World War II from February 1944 to January 1946. He landed in Bris, France in August of 1944 in Patton’s army in the 8th Infantry Division. The division was then sent north through Belgium and Luxemburg. They invaded Germany in the Battle of Hürtgen Forest during the Battle of the Bulge, where American troops defeated the Germans. This was the longest battle that was fought. He later joined General Dempsey’s British Second Army. They fought the Germans at the Elbe River. Later, William Geandomenico was one of the soldiers present at the historic moment when thousands of German soldiers surrendered at Schwerin to avoid the Russians.

William Geandomenico was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for heroic service to his country.

Peacocks & Pretty Things Beauty. They say it is in the eye of the beholder; but truly, it exists all around us, if we take the time to notice. My love of photography has certainly enhanced my ability to appreciate the aesthetics of my surroundings, from interesting cloud formations while waiting for sunsets, to pretty roadside blossoms that would otherwise be characterized as weeds to the undiscerning eye, to the novelty of light and shadow as it plays out upon a surface. Such is the abstract nature of visual “art.”

And then there are the moments when it appears before you in its most natural, stunningly striking form.

Case in point: several weeks ago, my friend and I enjoyed a late lunch at the famed Milleridge Inn, having both decided that it was the perfect locale after having not dined there in quite some time.

To our surprise, the holiday lights were still on full display, with remnants of the Christmas season in every corner of the restaurant and shops. Having just finished dismantling my own decorations the previous week, I was at once

nostalgic and slightly weary of them.

As we exited the bakery and made our way to the official Christmas shop located on the property, I spotted what appeared to be a large bird sitting on the railing of the ice cream parlor.

“Is that real?” I whispered to my friend, “Or just a decoration?”

We stared intently, only to be instantly startled. “It moved! Oh my gosh, it moved!”

As we tentatively approached, we realized it was a GIANT peacock. And with that, no less than half a dozen others peered out from behind various corners and crevices, along with several chickens and peahens. Unfazed by the humans before them, they moseyed to and fro, pausing briefly to study us. Thoroughly infatuated, we wandered after them, attempting to snap pictures and even a few short videos of these majestic feathered creatures.

As I knelt down and tentatively reached my hand out toward one especially beautiful specimen, my friend grabbed my phone to

capture the sight. The bird cocked his head slightly, examining me carefully, then strode purposefully toward me. Unsure if he was planning to sit on my lap or - more likely - to take a sizable bite out of me, I froze, backing away slightly. “Did you get the picture?” I nervously called to my friend. “Yes, I think I took about 27 of them,” she replied giggling.

Alright then, no sense pushing my luck. I quickly stood up as the peacock stared at me, seemingly perplexed.

“Sorry pretty bird, thanks for the photo op.” And with that, he fluttered his massive wings and took off, soaring to a nearby tree branch. By that point, a small crowd had gathered around us, amazed that this one bird had taken such an apparent liking to me. A little boy exclaimed to his parents, “Wow, they fly???”

Peering up at the bird, now perched overhead, my friend and I looked at each other in utter amazement.

“That,” I said, “was clearly the highlight of the day.”

Everyday Heroes As part of its Kindness Week programs, students at Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District were treated to a visit from Team Dawg.

FARMINGDALE GOES TO CHINA - Ms. Shih shows a traditional Chinese puppet to Mrs. Hoina’s third-grade class at Albany Avenue Elementary School.

The third-grade class at Albany Avenue Elementary School got a taste of the Far East during an interactive assembly titled, Let’s Go to China. Singer-songwriter, Patricia Shih, introduced students to the history of early China, teaching them why yellow became the color of the Emperor, and how the Chinese invented the process of making silk clothing from worms.

Ms. Shih also performed a fun show-and-tell with a

number of objects, brought back from her many travels to China, including: a paper parasol, porcelain bowl, colorful puppets, an enormous dragon kite, and a very loud gong!

With help from some of the children, Ms. Shih demonstrated the ancient art of the Chinese Ribbon Dance. Students had fun trying to mimic her sharp, rhythmic movements, precisely synchronized with Chinese music to

form patters in the air. This assembly supplements the third-grade curriculum, where students learn all about the different countries and cultures of the world.
