is the coordinating entity for LIHC. Dr. Zucker noted that this ground-breaking endeavor is exactly what the state health department is calling for in its effort to promote population health and integrated, coordinated health care services throughout New York’s local communities. Health commissioners for both Nassau and Suffolk counties - Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein and Dr. James Tomarken respectively – echoed Dr. Zucker’s comments. They agreed that the prevalence of chronic disease is widespread in both counties and a bi-county initiative like LIHC will help raise awareness and connect Long Islanders to the appropriate care and services. The Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) is comprised of all Long Island’s hospitals, the Nassau and Suffolk County Health Departments,

On Friday, January 10th, public health leaders and health care providers from the region gathered at the offices of the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council in Hauppauge to witness the launch of an historic community health initiative known as the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC). The Long Island Health Collaborative is a bicounty effort to help Long Islanders improve their health. A key component of LIHC’s work is a comprehensive website that connects Long Islanders to the health and social services they need to stay well or get well. Dr. Howard Zucker, the First Deputy Commissioner of Health for the State of New York, “flipped the switch” and officially launched the LIHC and its website at Friday’s event. NSHC is the agency that represents Long Islands’ hospitals and

and improve health in communities they serve. It has now moved beyond these mandates and stands as a fully integrated model of health and social service for all of Long Island’s communities. More specifically, the state’s Prevention Agenda 2013 – 2017 mandate asked local county health departments, hospitals, communitybased organizations, schools and other regional partners to join together to address unmet health needs in communities. LIHC performed that task in early 2013 and uncovered unmet needs in the areas of chronic disease prevention and management, especially related to obesity, as well as a great need for more mental health/substance abuse prevention and treatment services. As a result, LIHC’s efforts will focus on these priorities.

LIHC’s ultimate goal is the management of population health, which is really the steadfast coordination and integration of all clinical and social services that assist each and every Long Islander in becoming well and/or staying well. Health care providers - hospitals, doctors, laboratory service providers, nutritionists and social service providers of all types work together to provide coordinated health care. The website – http://nshc. org/long-island-healthcollaborative/ - is just the first step in achieving this goal. A bi-county walk effort to promote physical activity and that will reveal broad data about health and habits of Long Islanders is also planned, along with health and built-environment policy changes at the local level.

Competition Kickoff experiences and highlighted the value and importance of the robotics programs. An interactive session followed in which the parents provided suggestions for important fundraising activities and ways to reach other parents in the program.

After learning the rules and being shown the playing field, teams received a Kit of Parts made up of motors, batteries, a control system, a PC, and a mix of automation components – and only limited instructions. Working with adult mentors, students have six weeks to design, build, program, and test their robots to meet the season’s engineering challenge. Once these young inventors build a robot, their teams will participate in the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, which will take place on March 27th-29th at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

The FRC kickoff was hosted by Stony Brook University’s College Of Engineering and Applied Sciences and sponsored by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which has also sponsored the Long Island Regional FRC for the past fifteen years. “This proves to be an exciting time for the students and the mentors when they learn the name and the rules of the game for this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director, School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. “We were very proud to present the FRC kickoff as we prepare for the upcoming Long Island Regional FRC in March.” During the 2014 season, 49 teams from Long Island, New York City, the surrounding area and the Republic of Brazil will convene at Hofstra University for the Long Island Regional FRC on March 27th-29th, culminating with the 2014 FIRST Championship on April 24th-27th at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. “The next six weeks will be crucial for these students as they design and construct their robots for this competition,” said Ms. Madarash. “The Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition showcases the talents of these students who learn not only the basic technological aspects of building their robots, but also about other concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and gracious professionalism.” For more information, visit http://www.sbpli.org.

FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 22, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

More than 800 teenagers from Long Island and metropolitan New York-area schools converged at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University on January 4th for a local kickoff of the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC®) where they learned details of the 2014 robotics game called “Aerial AssistSM.” “The students who participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition are not only building robots; they are building character, self-respect, and relationships with their peers,” said Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research & Development and FIRST Founder, adding, “Winning the game is fun, but the importance of FIRST is that you’ll get much more out of it than you put in, and it’s going to change the rest of your life.” The 2014 game, “Aerial AssistSM,” is played by two Alliances of three teams each. Alliances compete by trying to score as many balls in goals as possible during a two-minute and 30-second match. Additional points are earned by robots working together to score goals, and by throwing and catching balls over a truss suspended just over five feet above the floor as they move the ball down the field. In addition, SBPLI held a special session for the students’ parents in which they learned about the organization, its mission and the impact of the robotics programs on the students’ lives, both academically and professionally. SBPLI representatives, team mentors ,volunteers and former Long Island Regional FRC participants shared

Kicking Into High Gear By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Has anyone else found that the more you have to accomplish in a given period of time, the more efficiently you tend to work? Tasked with a To Do list a mile long, one that would seem insurmountable at first glance, you suddenly kick into another gear entirely, mustering the kind of motivation not seen since the days of cramming for final exams and pulling all-nighters to finish term papers. The problem is complacency. Too easily do we settle into our routines, refusing to waver in our

preconceived notions of how our days should go; how much we are required to accomplish at a minimum, rather than how much we could achieve if only we exercised our full potential. Sad to say, “good enough” is exactly just that for most people – all that they are mentally capable of reaching for. But (and this is good news), see what happens when you take on a little more. Day by day, stretch yourself a bit too thin… and you will surely begin to see just how much time is wasted on a daily basis, and how much more we can accomplish if we only

rise to the occasion. The potential is there; we need only to unlock it. Think back to the days when achievement actually meant something, when everything was a means to an end in order to reach that next level. Why should that mentality change once we “grow up” and settle into adulthood? Why shouldn’t we continue to push the boundaries of excellency, to rise through the ranks and maximize every minute we can in pursuit of perfection? Everyone has a higher gear. There’s no better time than now to tap into the reserve.

M.D. “We are joining forces with our colleagues at Binghamton University and the University at Buffalo to make a difference. We look forward to implementation of Open SUNY – a worthy and timely initiative led by Chancellor Zimpher. This is truly an exciting time to be involved in higher education in New York State.” Across New York, 6.9 million adults have a high school degree but no college degree. Many want to pursue a degree but life commitments such as jobs, children, aging parents, financial limitations, and community ties limit their access to higher education. Open SUNY aims to reach these nontraditional students as well. “Open SUNY will completely redefine access to a college degree

in our state, reaching every child and adult in every school and home in New York,” added Chancellor Zimpher, “and reaching them on their terms - in their homes and communities, and on their time, adapting to their schedules.” Included as part of Open SUNY are builtin supports for students and faculty, such as 24/7 assistance for students, whether they need technical help, tutoring, financial planning, or academic advisement services; and a Center for Online Teaching Excellence where faculty can opt-in to training programs and online forums to broaden their knowledge about developing effective online courses or share best practices and learn directly from colleagues across SUNY. The eight Open SUNY+ degree programs to debut in January were chosen based on a number

Friends By: Bob Sinclair A breathtaking summer sunrise enhanced the silhouette of two couples wandering along a winding path toward a serene and deserted beach. They were captivated by the ocean’s rising tide, as the cascade of rolling waves tenderly rearranged all the sand within their reach.

FARMINGDALE - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JANUARY 22, 2014 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Caressed and warmed by the brilliance of the early morning sun, and the magic of the moment, they steal a breath of time to scratch their names in the inviting, ever-shifting sand. Embracing the tranquility of their surroundings, each couple, moved by the power and timeless majesty of the sea, seems to reach out to one another as their fingers instinctively intertwine, making it difficult to distinguish one hand from the other hand. Silently inhaling the wonders of nature, they slowly continue their journey along the water’s edge, their bare feet tickled by the chill of the surf randomly dancing along the shore.

“Sexy Rose” Photo by: Mike Missano, North Babylon

Returning at sunset, serenaded by the haunting sounds of the sea, only to discover the ocean had once again somewhat magically shifted the sand, washing away most letters and scrambling the rest into one word that expresses so much more. As the water escaped back into the arms of the sea, the message left behind touched them deeply and became a lasting part of their lives, creating a special bond that never ends. Each couple had scratched their names in the sand separately, and the ocean had mysteriously erased some letters and joined others, forever engraving just one word, whispered by a gentle breeze and echoed by the ocean... The Town of Oyster Bay is introducing a special Toddler Arts & Crafts program for children ages 2, 3 and 4. Parents are invited to sign their little ones up for the program, which is slated to be held at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph D. Muscarella. The sessions are FREE of charge and open to boys and girls. The program will run from February 24th through April 3rd. Parents will be able to choose either Monday or Thursday classes for their little artists. Each day will have two options of either 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 11:45

a.m. (one class per week, per child). “Parents are always seeking out activities for their toddlers that are both safe and beneficial. The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts Program is designed with their age and grasping level in mind,” Councilman Muscarella said. “Craft activities help kids develop basic motor skills and encourage them to think innovatively. It will also introduce them to a new world of creativity that will likely carry over to other areas of their life.” Councilman Muscarella noted that registration for the program will take place at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Recreation Office, located at 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa starting

The Farmingdale High School’s 2012-2013 Girls Lacrosse Team was recently honored by New York State Senators Kemp Hannon and Charles Fuschillo for winning the 2013 New York State Class A Championship. Members of the championship team, including Class of 2013 Alumni, were in attendance to accept their awards from Senator Hannon and Senator Fuschillo. “The students have worked hard all year and we’re very pleased to see that their hard work has paid off,” said Farmingdale High School Superintendent John Lorentz. “Their diligence and dedication in the classroom and on the field

has made them terrific role models within our community.” The Lady Dalers posted a 16-3 record on the way to their State Championship. The team went on to defeat Baldwinsville High School by a score of 8-5 to win the title at The State University of New York College at Cortland. “We are extremely proud of our Lady Dalers Lacrosse team and their accomplishments,” said Glen Zakian Farmingdale High School Principal. “It was an honor for them to be included in this ceremony and I know these young ladies will only continue to succeed in the future.” The Farmingdale School District congratulates the

student-athletes on their remarkable season: Jillian Alonso, Brescia Samantha, Paige DeVine, Mirella Despot, Karlee Dessel, Emily Dwyer, Kayleigh Escamilla, Maggie Fleming, Laura Fullam, Shannon Gaghan, Nadine Hadnagy, Kate Hess, Christine Kelly, Olivia Kirk, Sarah Konchalski, Johnna Leone, Emily Marlow, Courtney McPartland, Paige Nelson, Diana Prendergast, Lindsay Ramos, Lindsey Rzempoluch, Shannon Sullivan, Jenn Thompson, Sara Tolson, Amanda Turturro, Tara Wahl, Brenna Weill, Bridget Weill and Zoe Zebersky.

Monday, January 27th from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m and will continue daily, based on availability. Space is limited. This program is FREE and open to Town of Oyster Bay residents only. Parents or guardians must be present, and a valid proof of residency, along with your child’s birth certificate, is required. “Toddler Arts & Crafts provides a great opportunity to enjoy a fun-filled class that will help enhance your child’s creative mind and skills,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I encourage everyone to take advantage of this terrific program.” For further information, contact the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks Recreation Division at 516.797.4125 prompt #3.
