Spreading Holiday Cheer The Community Living Center at the Northport VA is looking festive for the holidays today, thanks to the efforts of a group of volunteers from PSEG Long Island. The dozen employees donned Santa hats as they worked to decorate the building’s main lobby, dining room, pool room and other areas with trees, garland and decorations for the longterm care patients who live there.

This is the fourth year PSEG Long Island employees have been invited to decorate at the VA thanks to a partnership with the Red Cross. The experience was special for the volunteers as well as the veterans who call the Northport VA home.

This year, the group brought along hundreds

of ornaments, lights, and other holiday decorations.

“Last year our employee volunteers noticed some of the VA’s decorations were past their prime, so we organized a holiday decoration drive throughout our offices,” said Robin Cantatore, PSEG Long Island customer representative.

“My coworkers were more than happy to donate new ornaments, garland, window clings, and other decorations to bring holiday cheer to this group that has done so much for our country.”

Throughout December, different groups of PSEG Long Island employees are spending time at the VA decorating more of the buildings, making gingerbread houses and cookies with some of the

veterans, and providing a large donation that will help the hospital provide warm clothing and other essentials to patients as they leave the facility.

PSEG Long Island is committed to giving back to the people and communities it serves.

Employee engagement on Long Island and the Rockaways is a top priority for the company. PSEG Long Island employees are actively involved with local charity events and organizations through the company’s Community Partnership Program. Educational and behavioral strategies are provided to assist the patient in developing a quit plan to eliminate the use of tobacco products or electronic nicotine delivery systems, also called ENDS. Farmingdale Volunteer Fair A Volunteer Fair was held in the commons of Farmingdale High School on Wednesday, November 28, 2018—organized by the Guidance Department and facilitated by counselors Lisa Jensen and Jackie Verre.

It was an opportunity for students (grades 9-12) to learn about local organizations, which are consistently in need of volunteers. The vendors included: Island Harvest Food Bank, AHRC, the

Farmingdale Public Library, Northwell Health, the Farmingdale Village Fire Department, the FBI Explorers Program, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and many others.

Students were encouraged to visit each booth and ask questions pertaining to time commitments, responsibilities, dress codes, and what qualifications each organization was looking for in a volunteer.

“Community service

is an important part of the educational process here at Farmingdale,” said counselor Lisa Jensen.

“Besides the physical and mental rewards, volunteer work in the community allows students to test out a career and discover hidden talents.

Charles E. Schwarting Elementary School in the Plainedge School District received a special visit from members of the Plainedge High School’s chamber orchestra on December 19th.

Under the direction of orchestra teacher Laura Ruotolo, the group of

approximately 30 students performed holiday classics for all of Schwarting’s staff and students. Ms. Ruotolo made the program interactive for the elementary students by reviewing each of the string instruments by name, allowing a student conductor to speed up and slow down

the performance of a song, and by having the students sing along. The visit served to inspire students who may wish to participate in the orchestra when they get older, as well to as add some holiday cheer to the school day.

Positive Behavior Support Community Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which was established in 2011 to help people with autism spectrum disorders, developmental disabilities and other special needs.

Their mission is to empower people with disabilities to make their own life choices and to succeed in the communities where they work, live and play. This organization helps these individuals access the support and services they need to become active and productive members of the community, encourages long-term planning to aspire towards meaningful life goals and supports efforts to establish social connections and friendships in the community. Independence Without Isolation is what they aim for as a foundation.

For individuals with disabilities, the movement away from inadequate and segregated institutional congregate custodial care has been taking place for about 40 years. Now more than ever, individuals with disabilities are seeking the opportunity to stay in their own communities and are pursuing their personal goals while receiving the needed levels of support to make full community inclusion a sustainable reality. What is often missing is communitybased, grass roots support networks... the inter-connected social fabric that will secure life-long inclusion for individuals with disabilities as the basic human right that it is!

This non-profit supports initiatives across Long Island. These initiatives are based in venues that are accessible to the community. They aim to create connections between individuals that need support, people that support them (paid staff), families and loved ones (circles of support), potential employers and businesses, integrated community resources that promote respect and dignity and service providers that support the philosophy of self direction. Some of their initiatives are Big Time GLEE, which is a grass roots singing group that meets every other week; Crafting Connection, which allows individuals to gather every other week to scrapbook, paint, draw and do more crafty

projects and lastly, Mid-Week Meetups, which help people develop friendships based on shared interests and explore new social and recreational opportunities across Long Island! Some other initiatives this organization supports are Nassau Voice, Speed Friending, Yoga Without Boundaries, Emergency Preparedness Classes and the Nature Experience.

Bringing Families Together Around The World (NAPSI)—With all the sad stories of conflict and desperation from around the world, it can be heartening to hear of loved ones reunited.

Here are just two of the happy examples: • Lydia spent months wondering if her daughter Odette was alive. Conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo forced Lydia to seek asylum in the U.S., leaving her far away from her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom— she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no

other way.”

• Conflict in Burundi forced Fidele to flee and lose touch with his loved ones, including his father.

After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was alive and well.

Armed conflict, international disasters and migration leave millions of people around the globe in urgent need of humanitarian assistance every year. As the world’s largest humanitarian network, Red Cross and Red Crescent teams help reconnect families separated by international crises.

Happy People Are “Luckier” My cousin Brandon has always been one of the happiest people I know. He has also been one of the luckiest. He has an uncanny ability to find the humor in everything, to play up his successes and brush off his challenges.

What I have come to realize is that happier people are luckier.

Let’s examine why that is. After all, my cousin has had some less than pleasant events in his life, as we all have. But because he never allowed them to take up too much space, they just seemed to not really matter all that much.

These days, he has a beautiful home, a happy marriage, two children and a thriving legal practice. Yes, he ultimately got pretty lucky, but perhaps some of his good fortune can be credited to his happiness.

I believe that, much like a radio, the frequency he is continuously emitting is positive. Therefore, an overwhelming amount of positive circumstances must show up as a reflection of the signal he is sending out. Picture those rooftop cell phone and radio towers. He’s dialed his station to

LUCKY FM. Some people tend to stay permanently tuned to WOE IS ME FM - Playing the best complaints all day long with few, if any, commercial interruptions.

If I just hit a nerve, that’s okay.

Trust me, I’ve been there and I get it. But if your dial is tuned to WOE IS ME FM, it should not come as a surprise that you feel unlucky, or that your antenna is tuned to pick up things during the day that are bound to frustrate, sadden or annoy you.

If you were to sit at the computer and type questions into Google, like, “Why is life so hard?”

“Why are there bad people in the world?” or “Show me where there are wars, famines, floods and people suffering,” Google could cue up that information for you and provide you with plenty of evidence that life is a scary and unhappy proposition.

Conversely, if you were to Google, “Reasons to feel happy,” “Things to love about being alive,” or “Most beautiful places on earth,” Google can show you results that would reinforce life as joyful and pleasant. As a result,

my hypothesis is as follows: Happy people seem lucky because they feel lucky. Either consciously or unconsciously, they have made a decision to keep their antenna tuned to the people, places, circumstances and events that help to reinforce this lucky feeling. In return, this makes them feel happy, which leads to more of the same. It’s a remarkably genius feedback loop.

Here are four simple steps you can take today to begin to tune your antenna to a happier station: Smile at people as they pass by. Reminise about positive memories - ones that make you laugh and ones that make you feel blessed. Start a gratitude journal just start with five entries a day if that’s less overwhelming. Read or watch something funny each and every day.

You will begin to build up your positive feedback loop and you can add more practices as time goes on. The object of this exercise is to reinforce that happy feeling, re-tune your antenna and one day have someone ask you, “How’d you get so lucky?!”
