There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.”

I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English).

I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”

I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right?

Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game.

Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then

why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps.

Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something.

To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Athlete Letters of Intent Sixteen student-athlete seniors at Farmingdale High School signed their letters of intent on December 3, 2018 to signify their commitment to college sports teams.

The seniors gathered in the lecture hall of Farmingdale High School, where they were joined by family members, coaches, Superintendent Paul Defendini, Assistant Superintendent Glen

Zakian, Principal Dr. Samuel Thompson, Assistant Principal Jed Herman, and the Director of Athletics, Jeanne Berkoski.

Director Berkoski led the remarks, and turned the microphone over to the high school coaches, who gave a short biography of each athlete and announced the college they would be attending.

“We are extremely

proud of all our young men and women who will be continuing their athletic journeys in various colleges,” said Ms. Berkoski. “These seniors are the first wave of student-athletes who have made early commitments to play a sport in college.

There will be many more to come! But what is also very significant is their GPA’s, which are mostly above 95.

Now that’s impressive!”

Grammy Winning Concert Grammy Award winning musician Tim Kubart returned to his hometown elementary school— Woodward Parkway in Farmingdale— to give a very special performance to the K-1 student body on Friday, December 14, 2019.

“This is the best thing we do all year,” said Mr. Kubart. “It’s an absolute party and everyone has such a good time.” All the young Dalers were super excited to see him. They danced and sang along to his songs with great enthusiasm.

Last year at this time, Tim and his bandmates set up a recording session at Woodward Parkway, and worked with music

teacher Stephanie Hass and her third-grade chorus students to record background vocal tracks for a song titled “We are Growing.”

That song was included on his new album, Building Blocks, which just earned him a 2019 Grammy Nomination for Best Children’s Album.

Tim was delighted to share the news (and the nomination) with the now fourth-grade students whom he reconnected with after the concert.

This was his fourth annual concert at Woodward Parkway Elementary School. This time, he invited Ms. Haas to join him on stage to sing “We are Growing.”

The kids loved it!

Mr. Kubart said Building Blocks is inspired by his happy memories from his years attending Woodward Parkway. His first album, Home, won the 2016 Grammy for Best Children’s Album. For four years he was the Host/ Writer/Producer of Sunny Side Up on NBCUniversal’s Sprout Channel. Currently, he’s a cast member in Post Modern Jukebox, and hosts a spin-off called Post Modern Juicebox. Mr. Kubart also hosts a podcast for Highlights Magazine, and came out with his first children’s book, Oopsie-do! this past May.

Chewy Macaroons

By Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York is a recipe buff with a special affinty for what our nation’s presidents ate throughout the decades.

In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes.

Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.

What You Will Need:

2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla

New Year, New Me Mindset.

It’s officially 2019! If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.

giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!

It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.

One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.

My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us.

I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose.

After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation.

My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water.

I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people.

However, little Frankie, pictured with Santa (played by Jim Kern), hasn’t had the experience of visiting with Santa since he was just an infant, due to sensory overload caused by his Autism. Previously, the stimulus of such an experience would have
