tudents in Kimberly Haverbusch’s class recently volunteered to decorate large boxes for the Schwarting Avenue Elementary School’s PTA, which is sponsoring a Food Drive for the holiday season. Practicing this month’s character trait of Citizenship, students cut out shapes and used markers to help decorate the boxes with Thanksgiving themes. The PTA will then fill each box with food for needy families.

Street Smartz By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sure we have all heard the expression, “book smart, but no common sense.” It seems slightly contradictory, but quite accurate in many cases. I can vouch for that. I seem to recall an incident several years back – mainly because I have continually been reminded of it – of when I came storming downstairs, beyond frustrated at how hot it was in my bedroom even though the window was wide open. My mother, perplexed, followed me back upstairs to check out the situation. She peered through the window. Tap. Tap. Tap. She gently knocked on the glass. Yes, the glass. Apparently, in my frustration I hadn’t noticed that, while the window was indeed open, the storm door remained

in a closed position. Hence, the lack of cool air. Instant classic. Oh but that wasn’t where it ended. Through the years, I have on occasion come out with a phrase or expression which – so I thought – was quite cliché and widely used. Except… I may have gotten it slightly wrong. Very wrong, in fact. Case in point: Moo point. Yes, you read that correctly. Apparently, this is what I thought I had heard, time and time again, never doubting that it was, in fact, the commonly accepted form of the expression. Oh, but there’s more. There was the “play it by year” debacle. I forget exactly how that one came up, but even after I was met with blank stares and a general, “I’m sorry,

what did you just say?” reaction, I was still convinced that my version made perfect sense. I clearly remember attempting to justify it by explaining, “It’s like, you wait a year and see how it goes…play it by year…get it?” Apparently not. Where did all of these little nuggets of wisdom come from? One can only imagine. I’d like to think they were compiled throughout the many years of studying and writing papers, of researching and reading, of indulging that perfectionist gene to the point that – years later, when all that was behind me – I was free to embrace the airhead that was lurking just under the surface all along. See, all that schoolwork must have done unrepairable damage – um, I mean irreparable. Right.

The Toys-for-Tots program brings a lot of happiness to families who are struggling at this time of year. I invite and encourage everyone to consider donating a toy or a gift appropriate for children and teenagers of any age.”

The Farmingdale School District recently adopted a resolution to join the New York State School Boards Association’s (NYSSBA) efforts to prevent congressional budget sequestration scheduled to take effect on January 2nd, 2013. Sequestration, terminology referring to cuts in federal programing, would affect school districts across the country, including the Farmingdale School District. If sequestration goes into effect, budget cuts will affect the District beginning in the 2013-2014 school year. “It is vital to inform the community and be proactive in responding to the unfortunate possibility of reduction in federal aid and programs,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent of Schools. “It is very

important to be strong advocates against the current sequestration plan in order to save all of our current curriculum programs.” John Capobianco, Farmingdale School District Board of Education Trustee added, “The resolution that the board unanimously passed highlights our concern that these cuts would be detrimental to our students’ programs and the local property taxpayers. We are in the process of reaching out to our local elected officials to make them aware of our concerns.” According to various reports, federal education programs would be cut by an average of 8.2 percent on a national level. Eighty-two thousand dollars of every $1 million allocated for Title I and IDEA – programs designed to assist students with disabilities

– would be lost. For the Farmingdale School District, this would mean a loss of over $155,000 in federal aid. The impact of these federal cuts on the Farmingdale School District could mean increased class sizes and programs being cut, increasing the challenges for student achievement and educational opportunities. The Farmingdale School District continues to encourage the community to become involved in the issues that affect our schools. We invite members of the community to attend our next Board of Education meeting, December 5th at 8 p.m. in the Howitt Middle School cafeteria. For more information on District initiatives, please visit the District’s website at www.farmingdaleschools. org.

Requests for group charters can be scheduled by calling the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center at 516.433.7465, ext. 8231. C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano noted that the skate shop will be

open during all public sessions for renting skates at $4 per pair per session. Discount books for skate rentals will be available for $35. “Most of us think of ice skating simply as fun, but it also provides a terrific aerobic workout, strengthens our lower body muscles, improves our endurance, coordination, balance and flexibility and gives us a healthy dose of fresh air in the process,” Councilman Coschignano commented. “Skating also gives everyone a chance to burn off some of those extra calories consumed during the holidays. And don’t let age or perceived lack of athletic ability deter you from ice skating. You’ll see people of all ages and ability levels at the rinks.” Residents may also want to try out Speed Skating, which is being offered this year at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park ice rink only, for $10 per skater and $5 for Senior Citizens. Anyone interested can call 516.677.5990 for more information. So, if you’re looking for some great family entertainment that provides fun, outdoor exercise, break out of your hibernation and take a spin at the SyossetWoodbury or Marjorie R. Post Community Park ice rink and enjoy the quintessential winter experience of outdoor ice skating. The Councilman added that for those who would prefer to do their ice skating indoors, the stateof-the-art Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park, is open year round. For information on that facility, visit the Town’s Web site at www.oysterbaytown.com or call the rink at 516.433.RINK (7465).

Dim A Little, Save A Lot (NAPSI)—Rising energy costs and recent legislation called the Energy Independence and Security Act are encouraging many homeowners to reduce energy consumption. This means new, energy-efficient light sources are more popular than ever. It also makes dimming the lights more than a way to set a nice mood. It’s a way to save electricity. Dimming an incandescent or halogen light just 25 percent can save you up to 20 percent in energy—and makes your lightbulbs last up to 20 times longer. Though compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and screw-in light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs use less energy than typical incandescent and halogen bulbs do, historically, they’ve not been compatible with light dimmers. Lights have been known to drop out, not turn on and/or turn off unexpectedly. To help, there’s the new C¡L dimmers from Lutron. They work not only with incandescent and halogen bulbs, but also with dimmable CFLs and LEDs.

Turkey Drive Donation

Continued From Page 10 Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization which has been extensively involved in supporting victims of Hurricane Sandy. Hundreds of volunteers donated their time to help assist in the collection, helping to unload car deliveries, sort through groceries, and load donations onto Island Harvest’s refrigerated truck. Volunteers included students from Hofstra University’s Women’s Golf Team and Men’s Lacrosse Team and various athletes from Stony Brook University. Since 2009, hundreds of Long Island residents,

businesses and volunteers have come out to assist in the Bethpage Turkey Drive, which after four years, now has cumulatively collected 20,000 turkeys and 35,000 pounds of food, which are then provided to Long Island’s families in need. Highlights from this year’s effort include a large donation from Bethpagebased Goya Foods that supplied more than 8,000 pounds of food, and Centereach residents Jennifer and Mike Trombino, who donated 50 frozen turkeys worth $1,400. “This year’s drive took on increased meaning as exemplified by our

supporters and our committed volunteers, many of whom themselves remain temporarily displaced from the storm, having suffered great damage to their own homes,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Corporate Strategy, Bethpage. “We are thankful to have the means to support our fellow Long Islanders during this time of adversity, and want to thank again all of our partners including Cablevision, the NY Islanders and Connoisseur Media – for continuing to support this vital effort.”

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use

ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans.com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Toys For Tots Drop-Offs Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty (DGSIR), one of the nation’s leading realtors, is embracing the spirit of the holiday season by hosting a Toys for Tots drive that encompasses 54 locations from Manhasset to Shelter Island on Long Island’s North Shore. The event is planned for December 9th, from 2 to 4 p.m. “The Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization is excited to be promoting Toys for Tots across the North Shore of Long Island,” said Patricia Petersen, president and CEO of DGSIR. “As a group, we have a history of coming together to support good causes and we are particularly thrilled to support Toys for Tots, especially in light of the many Long Island families whose homes were damaged or destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.” Last year, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s Laura Zambratto, an associate director with the organization’s upper tier marketing program, hosted a Toys for Tots drop off during an open house at one of her listings. She decorated the home, provided refreshments and by the end of the open house had greeted more than 100 visitors including neighbors, prospective homebuyers, real estate agents and friends. “I was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and generosity of the community,” she recalls. “One person brought two

new bicycles. I knew right away that the Daniel Gale Sotheby’s organization would want to join with me this year and help collect toys for children in our local communities. Of course, we didn’t know at the time how great the need would be this year.” Under Laura’s guidance, a total of 54 locations will be hosting festive drop off events with decorations and refreshments, among them DGSIR office locations* and at every Daniel Gale Sotheby’s open house across the North Shore on December 9. See www.danielgale.com and the local newspapers for open house locations. Those interested in donating can drop off new, unwrapped toys either at local Daniel Gale Sotheby’s offices from December 2 through December 9 or at the open houses on December 9. “The Marine Corps is sending out 20 Marines to help with our collection efforts on that day,” explains Laura. “They spend the afternoon with us and will answer questions about the program.” The mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to less fortunate children in the community in which the campaign is conducted. *DGSIR office drop off locations include:

Syosset, Huntington, East Norwich, Locust Valley, Glen Head/Sea Cliff, Manhasset, Shelter Island, Stony Brook, Garden City, Cold Spring Harbor, Cutchogue. Founded in 1922, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty consistently leads the nation in achieving one of the highest average sales prices in the country. DGSIR is a $1.8 billion dollar plus organization with close to 600 sales associates in 21 sales offices spanning Long Island. Services include a Relocation Division, an award-winning Marketing & Technology Department, a newlyformed Development Marketing Group, Commercial and Rental Divisions; Ambassador Abstract title company, and a Wells Fargo Home Mortgage affiliation. The Sotheby’s International Realty® affiliate for Long Island’s North Shore since 1976, DGSIR has gained national and international recognition, including top honors worldwide. In addition to its place on the Regents Board of Who’s Who in Luxury Real Estate, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty is active in Real Trends and The Realty Alliance (comprising some of the real estate industry’s most influential companies with participation “by invitation only”). For more information visit www.danielgale.com.

Don’t Get Soaked By A FloodDamaged Car (NAPSI)—Recently, a number of extreme storms and hurricanes left thousands of cars in the surrounding areas damaged by floodwaters. Unfortunately, it’s common for many of these flood-damaged cars to end up back on the road every year. But by doing a little homework, you can avoid buying a car that is

rotting from the inside out. To help, here are some tips: • Check the trunk, glove compartment and below the seats for signs of water damage, such as mud or rust. • Flex the wires beneath the dashboard. Wet wires will become brittle upon drying and may crack.

• Take a deep breath and smell for musty odors from mildew. • Ask to see a vehicle history report. For example, Carfax Reports can reveal many hidden problems, including if a vehicle has reported flood damage. To learn more, visit www.carfax.com.

residents and families,” stated Denise Waterhouse, development specialist, Options for Community Living. “We are very grateful to Burlington Coat Factory for helping our residents during this holiday season.”

(NAPSI)—Even with the U.S. unemployment rate high, technicians and skilled trade workers top the list of the hardest jobs to fill, according to a Manpower Group talent shortage survey. This gap in today’s competitive job market can be a great opportunity for those who are considering attending a trade or technical school over a traditional college or university. Specifically targeting this highskilled worker need, one organization has introduced a Career Education Grant Program to provide a one-time $1,000 grant to members and their eligible dependents toward enrollment and BURLINGTON GIVES BACK - Pictured: Laura Shannon, program manager, attendance at an Options for Community Living; Kat Zappa, store manager, Burlington Coat Factory; accredited trade or and Denise Waterhouse, development specialist, Options for Community Living. technical school.

“Higher education provides a tremendous advantage toward success,” says Paul Pevsner, M.D., President of the Alliance for Affordable Services, “but the cost of postsecondary education continues to increase. That is why it is important for Alliance to offer members assistance in achieving their educational goals, regardless of the type of school they choose to attend.” The grant program is a welcome complement to the already successful Alliance Scholarship Program. Over $1.9 million in scholarship awards has helped more than 1,200 high school graduates and college students pursue undergraduate degrees since the scholarship

Helping Your Pets Take A Bite Out Of Poor Health

(NAPSI)—Dog owners who think a dog’s mouth is cleaner than a human’s are barking up the wrong tree—and they are not alone. In fact, according to a recent survey, many pet owners have beliefs about their pet’s health that are not accurate or grounded in science. For example, the study—commissioned by the Greenies brand, the maker of dental chews and treats for pets-found that almost half of pet owners believe that dogs’

mouths are cleaner than humans’ and that any type of chewing is good for a dog’s teeth. It also found that about 40 percent thought it was normal for their pets to have stinky breath. About one-third of pet owners believed that a dog’s saliva was capable of curing human wounds. “There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding a pet’s oral health,” said veterinary dental expert Dr. Jan Bellows, incoming president of the

American Veterinary Dental College. “Dogs’ mouths are certainly not cleaner than a human’s. Dogs often carry a variety of germs and bacteria in their mouths that stem from buildup of plaque and tartar that can potentially make humans sick through contact with saliva.” The Right Kind of Chewing “Many pet owners also believe that any type of chewing is good for their dogs, but tooth fractures are a common

occurrence in pets because teeth can only withstand a certain amount of pressure from hard objects before they break. When pets chew on inflexible items, such as bones, ice cubes or nylon toys, it can put them at risk for breaking a tooth. And while smelly breath in pets is common, pet owners who believe this is normal may be missing the signs of poor oral health or potential dental disease,” Dr. Bellows said. A Healthy Mouth Is

Key A healthy mouth is essential to the overall well-being of pets, but misguided information about pet oral health can affect more than just your pet’s mouth. For proper pet oral health, veterinarians advise daily brushing or giving of Veterinary Oral Health C o u n c i l (VOHC)?approved dental treats, and at least annual oral exams by a veterinarian with professional cleanings as recommended.

“Pet owners who are knowledgeable about their furry companions’ oral health will avoid the pitfalls of commonly held myths and enable the best care for everyone’s well-being,” said Dr. Bellows. To learn more about commonly accepted pet oral health myths and how to keep your pets’ mouths healthy, visit www.Facebook.com/gree nies.
