over 80% of the treated patients grew out normal looking toenails after just one treatment. Patients are extremely happy having this new treatment choice.” Dr. Orlandi continues saying, “The painless treatment requires no anesthesia, usually takes 20 to 30 minutes for all ten toes, has no side effects and uses no harmful UV radiation. Since there is no pain, you can walk out just like you walked in, with no restrictions. Toenail polish and shoes can be worn immediately after treatment. Excellent results are commonly seen following treatment of this condition. Healthy, clear toenails are a general indicator of good health, and there is no need to be embarrassed by unsightly fungal toenails.” For further information, contact Office Manager Arrianne at 631.669.4955.

All-American Honors Three former studentathletes from the Farmingdale High School Class of 2012, Kaitlin Gaghan, Kimberly Kolodny and Colleen Reynolds, were recently named High School AllAmericans by the Women’s Game of U.S. Lacrosse. “We are extremely proud of Kaitlin, Kimberly and Colleen for achieving this outstanding and notable recognition of being named High School All-Americans,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent. “Their diligent work ethic and dedication in the classroom and on the lacrosse field made them well deserving candidates of this honor.” Kimberly Kolodny and Colleen Reynolds were selected as First Team U.S. Lacrosse All-Americans for their exceptional skills and sportsmanship. They currently attend Rutgers

and Fairfield, respectively. Kaitlin Gaghan earned herself a U.S. Lacrosse Academic All-American award for her outstanding achievements in both her academics and lacrosse and now attends Quinnipiac. “Kim, Kaitlin and Colleen were team captains and emotional leaders who left an indelible mark on the high school lacrosse program,” said Shari Campbell, Farmingdale High School Head Girls Lacrosse Coach. “They are welldeserving of being recognized as High School All-Americans.”

Full disclosure: I am a Yankee fan. Always have been, always will be. That said, I fully respect those who are not. However, as with politics, when a rivalry takes a turn toward bitter hatred, I lose that respect. Let’s be reminded that, contrary to larger, more world-defining issues, baseball is a game – a highly profitable one, yes; but still, just a game. I laugh when I hear those who use the Yankees’ exorbitant payroll as a valid reason for despising each and every player on the team. Need it be pointed out that just about every team in the MLB employs numerous multi-millionaires on its roster? Is the difference between $5 million for one player versus $20 million for another really that different in the larger scope of things? These are grown men playing a game for a living.

Let’s face it – they are all grossly overpaid. The same can be said for most rock stars, members of Hollywood’s elite, just about all professional athletes – and even some members of a few more universally respected professions. You know, like lawyers and accountants and Wall Street executives… So yes, I understand the criticism directed at certain members of the baseball world whom fans feel have not pulled their weight, who may not have truly “earned their paycheck” this past season. I wholeheartedly agree. But seriously, do you mean to tell me that if a member of your favorite team went on to win the World Series, this extravagance would somehow be deemed more acceptable? I don’t know what it takes to “earn” $20 million, but I’m pretty sure playing baseball doesn’t qualify regardless of

the outcome of the games. It’s the system as a whole that is unbalanced. And, if we’re being totally candid, I’m willing to bet that there are few among us who would turn down such a lucrative opportunity if it meant a lifetime of financial security. So perhaps we shouldn’t be so quick to judge. I enjoy my entertainment as much as the next person. And yes, when my team puts on such a pathetic showing as they did this past postseason, I am filled with just as much frustration as the next person. But then common sense creeps in… just because someone signed a $20 million check for a player, does not guarantee that they will succeed each and every day. We are all only human, despite how inhuman such sums of money sometimes seem. Let’s all save the hatred for an issue that truly matters.

Concussion of the brain is the very common injury that occurs under different circumstances. It can occur during the simple slip and fall accident, motor vehicle accident, but most commonly it does in sport. Over the last ten years a lot of research was done with an intention to explain why there is much higher incidence of neurological disorders affecting professional sport players. This study eventually revealed that a mild head injury causes pathological processes that eventually may lead to neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Lou Gehrig’s, etc. During the mild head injury or mild concussion of the brain, the symptoms of the actual injury could be transient and brief, and eventually this condition becomes virtually asymptomatic or having very subtle symptoms. Those symptoms could be just a mild headache, excessive fatigue, excessive or lack of sleep, problem with concentration. Since many symptoms of concussion are brief and may not be present on the second or third day after the concussion, it will leave very little tools to help a doctor to determine if the player is ready to go back to play. Current thinking is that optimal recovery of concussed students occurs when there is cognitive, physical, and emotional rest following injury. Additionally, research has shown that 92% of second injuries occur in the first week following the initial injury, and the goal is to allow adequate recovery time before allowing a student to risk re-injury. Pressure to return an athlete before it is safe can be intense from parents and athletes. Primary care physicians are being asked to assist in the process of keeping injured children safe by remaining objective and withholding participation until it is deemed safe with a reasonable degree of medical certainty.

return to school), but we anticipate a similar slow exertional challenge as we see in RTP. The graduated steps begin after the student has a medical clearance to return to academics, and is symptom free off pain killing medicines for a full 24 hours. RTL should be an individualized steady progression with the parent’s checking the child daily for a return of symptoms and alerting you if the student is struggling so you can provide appropriate requests for medical accommodations to the school as needed. Unlike a RTP, the RTL might start at any level and progress at a rate individualized to the student’s needs and tolerance. Steps might be skipped as tolerated and might look something like this: Students with reasonable recovery times typically will get accommodations within the school by the principal. Students with protracted recovery beyond about 10 weeks, a school quarter, are likely eligible for a 504 plan or an IEP, and you might be asked to write a request to support the family at that time.

The Concussion Act of NYS

The Concussion Act of NYS took effect July 1, 2012, and requires schools to: • Educate parents, athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, physical education teachers, and school nurses on concussion, • Remove observed or suspected concussed students from play based on signs and symptoms, • Withhold further participation until evaluated by, and received written and signed authorization to return to activities from a licensed physician. • Obtain physician clearance, and when the athlete has been symptom-free off pain killing medicines for a minimum of 24 hours and allow them to begin a monitored progressive six phase return to play. MAKING A CLINICAL DETERMINATION • Symptoms: somatic (e.g. headache, nausea, dizziness), cognitive (e.g. feeling in a fog), and/or emotional (e.g. liability)

• Behavioral changes: irritability, personality changes • Cognitive impairment: Hard time concentrating, trouble remembering, not feeling themselves, being confused, thinking speed slowed down, taking a longer time to react • Sleep disturbance: drowsiness, insomnia GRADUATED RETURN TO PHYSICAL EXERTION AND ACTIVITY OR RETURN TO PLAY (RTP) This is a six step gradual return to activity. The RTP protocol may not start until an athlete is completely symptom-free for a full 24 hours off pain killing medicines, and must remain symptom-free for 24 hours following each stage before progressing further. RECOVERY Average recovery following concussion is about a week to ten days; protracted recovery with post concussion syndrome is after 21 days. Young teenage girls often have protracted recovery more than any other group. RETURN TO LEARN (RTL) More information will be forthcoming about RTL (cognitive

at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. This was an ecologic project that served to 1) help give shelter to bats indigenous to the area that are declining in population, and 2) eliminate a local insect overpopulation issue. The bats that inhabit the new houses are known predators to mosquitoes and other insects that had become a nuisance in the park. The project included a fundraiser car wash, the construction of bat houses, and the installation of the houses.

Nassau BOCES Education Partner Awards program is now accepting nominations through Friday, November 2nd. Now in its seventh year, the program has added specific award categories allowing for a greater number and variety of honorees. In addition to the Education Partner award category, which is open to individuals from all walks

of life, nominations are being accepted in five special award categories. And, for the first time, organizations can be nominated. The award categories are: • Education Partner (open to all) - Teachers • Nassau BOCES employees Organizations • School Board Members - Students

“One of the nicest things about our program is that, just like Nassau BOCES, it is open to people from all walks of life, and we welcome nominations that reflect this diversity,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, Nassau BOCES district superintendent. “Each year, we honor those whose impact on public education can be measured in a tangible

way. And, in these challenging times we are especially appreciative of people who go above and beyond the scope of their commitments.” A strategic education partner with local school districts since 1967, Nassau BOCES created the Education Partner Awards program to recognize those who share its commitment to providing the best

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town’s Annual Leaf Collection Program is scheduled to get underway on Monday, November 5th. “The special leaf collection program will run through Friday, December 7th,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “Bagged leaves will be picked up on residents’ regular S.O.R.T. recycling collection days by the combined forces of the Department of Public Works-Sanitation & Recycling Collection Division and the Highway Department. The Highway Department will also pick up bagged leaves in unincorporated areas that

do not receive Town sanitation every Monday for the duration of the leaf collection program.” Councilman Muscarella went on to say that residents should place their bagged leaves at the curb with their other recyclables. Sanitation crews will collect up to 20 bags. Locations that have more than 20 bags will have the excess picked up by Highway or Sanitation personnel the following day. For further information about leaf collection, contact the Sanitation & Recycling Collection Division at 516.677.5848 or the Highway Department at 516.677.5757.

accomplishment." In the spring, Woodward Parkway Elementary School band teacher, Erica Hartmann, initiated the idea of applying for NYSSMA's highest award. Erica Hartmann, Ms. Padden and the entire music department began to accumulate the data necessary for submission. The Farmingdale Music Department is delighted

that School District Administrators as well as several Farmingdale music teachers will attend the December NYSSMA Presidential Citation Award Ceremony to receive the award. For more information on the Farmingdale School District’s NYSSMA highest honor, visit the District’s website at www.farmingdaleschools. org.

The Farmingdale School District is proud to announce that the District’s music department was recently selected as the recipient of the highly prestigious New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Presidential Citation Award, the highest honor recognizing school districts with comprehensive and exemplary music programs. NYSSMA grants this award to districts that are models for music education. Each

It is an honor to have NYSSMA recognize the accomplishments of the District’s music program. The extensive criterion includes the components NYSSMA deems essential for a successful music education. The lengthy and extensive application provides a profile of the district’s music program including the district music curriculum and time allotted for General Music, rotation lessons,

and ensemble rehearsals. NYSSMA considers the percentage of the district’s students involved in the music program at each level, the size of the teaching staff, and the number of students who continue from elementary school to middle school to high school. The association also determines the incorporation of technology in music classes as well as the District’s support of staff development and conferences for music teachers. NYSSMA additionally assesses the support that Building Administrators and Central Administrators give to the music program. Fine Arts Director Rita Zirpolo Padden commented, "Each year our music teachers set rigorous goals for themselves and their students. They create wonderful performances that demonstrate outstanding student musicianship. It is very exciting to have the New York State School Music Association recognize our
