learned early on that life is a journey; A Journey Four Paws had a lot of meaning for me on a personal level taking the negatives that come our way in life and turning them into positives in each day no matter how bad it may be. I’ve learned so much from my dogs over the years and they give me so much love and ask for so little. We enjoy the outdoors and being together, so seeing Long Island from a walking perspective with them was a wonderful and rewarding experience. And to have raised some money for 2 very important organizations to me is a bonus,” said Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique. At ‘the end’ of her Journey there was a Pet Celebration event in Montauk, of Long Island, was also a pet festival with pet vendors, music, food, raffles, prizes for best HOWL-o-ween costumes and more. While donations for A Journey Four Paws are still

coming in, Irene estimates to have raised a about two thousand dollars at this point, to be split and donated to the Long Island Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and to Central Suffolk Paws a division of LI-Dog. Both beneficiaries were picked because they are close to Irene’s heart and because she suffers from Arthritis and the town in which she lives desperately needs a dog park. Central Suffolk Paws is working

People traveled from all over Long Island, upstate and New York City to Montauk on Monday, October 8th (Columbus Day) to cheer on Irene Rabinowitz, owner of Barks-n-Bubbles Boutique, and her dog Sydney at the tail end of their journey of walking 70-miles in four days to raise awareness and funds for two charitable organizations. A Journey Four Paws was Irene’s way of doing something to make a positive impact on getting a dog park built in her hometown in Selden, NY and to raise awareness about Arthritis - in which both her and her dog suffer from. But because of their daily long walks it helps keep them fit and the arthritis at bay. It was her personal journey to do this and had support from pet lovers and pet companies from all over the United States as well as Canada. “I feel great that I put my mind to something and did it. I hope others can realize that ‘anything is possible.’ I

Accepting The Challenge

Students at Plainedge Middle School experienced Rachel’s Impact, a dynamic program that motivates positive changes in the way students treat one another. Inspired by Rachel Scott, the first person killed during the tragic shootings at Columbine High School 12 years ago, the kind acts she demonstrated during her life and the contents of her diaries serve as the

catalysts for this national effort. Plainedge students were engaged with powerful video and audio footage of Rachel’s life and the Columbine tragedy. Rachel’s Impact is an abbreviated version of the Rachel’s Challenge program, and focuses on giving students five main challenges: looking for the best in others; treating others the way you want to be treated; choosing

positive influences; speaking words of kindness, not cruelty; and forgiving yourself and others. The day of events culminated with a special Rachel’s Challenge community presentation, to which parents, students and general community members were invited to witness the program in its entirety.

On October 27th at 7 p.m., Operation SPLASH (Stop Polluting Littering and Save Harbors ) will host the first-ever screening of the new documentary-short, Standing Against The Tide, The Story Of Operation SPLASH. This eye-opening documentary will appropriately debut at the Freeport Museum on the Nautical Mile. The film was written, produced, directed and edited by Hofstra University students Corey Protin and Alexandra Faul. This 15-minute movie documents the 22-year history of Operation SPLASH and their neverending battle against polluted Long Island waterways. “Working on this project has opened my eyes to Long Island’s large environmental issues which I think every ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE - Students signed a banner reading “I Accept resident should know Rachel’s Challenge” to remind them of the pledge they made to keep compassion and kindness within the community.

Rob Weltner, president of Operation SPLASH said “We’re very fortunate to have so many unselfish, hard-working volunteers in Operation SPLASH. And for their efforts to be captured in this wonderful short film by Corey and Alexandra, it reminds us all that there are good people doing great things for our environment because they care.” Special guests, elected officials and local dignitaries have been invited to attend the free Premiere Party, and the general public is welcome to attend as well. Back in June, when I officially “retired” from dancing, I assumed that with this newfound free time would come the unintended benefit of being able to catch up – watching the hours of TV shows I never seemed to be home for, going through the ever-growing pile of magazines collecting on my desk, or perhaps even tackling a book or two. Well, here we are, four months later, and I have to say – even if I took an entire day off to do the aforementioned things, I would probably barely make a dent. What are we, four weeks into the new TV season? I would say, cumulatively, that

I have about 12 hours or so of unwatched episodes to catch up on. Not that there’s really any point, since one glance at the social media sites pretty much ruins any suspenseful plot twists. And the magazines… well they’re fairly outdated for the most part. Still entertaining, but the list of upcoming events tends to lose some impact when they have all already passed, wouldn’t you say? Books… well, let’s just say that the only time I have managed to read an entire book (at least, since leaving school) is if I take it with me on vacation. Because, let’s face it, the plot tends to lose something when there’s a three-month gap between chapters. It’s amazing that when you

subtract certain obligations from your life, there always seem to be about 20 more that immediately crop up to fill the void. It makes you wonder how it’s even possible to accomplish what you need to. But I suppose we do manage, somehow. We find the time for those things we truly want to do; and we manage to avoid those things we would rather push to the bottom of the list. Simple human nature. Not the most practical or rational of practices, but still – it is how most of us tend to conduct our lives. Perhaps we should all take a page out of one of those unread “self-help” books and adjust our schedules to fill the void with some free time.

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the First Half of the 2012-2013 School Tax Levy is due on October 1st, but can be paid without penalty through November 13th. Please be certain to sign your

check, and make it payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes. Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and Phone number on the check. “By law, a taxpayer has

a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax

LEGACY AWARD - During the American Heart Association’s 10th Anniversary of the Heartsaver Awards, Karen and John Acompora received the American Heart Association Legacy Award. The Legacy Award and was created to honor recognize individuals or organizations whose very existence has altered the course of history. After the loss of their son Louis from sudden cardiac arrest when he was only 14 years old, the Acompora’s made it their mission to change the actions of others and alter the perception of cardiac arrest. Their efforts have changed the very core of effort to save lives.

remains unpaid, retroactive to October 1st.” “Tax bills are expected be mailed starting on October 5th, when the collection warrant’s computer-based information is processed, verified and certified as correct by the Receiver’s Office.” Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall West, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, or by check only at the Receiver of Taxes Office, Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa. Our office in Town Hall South can be reached by the rear entrance of the building. In addition, the Hicksville Annex in the TOB Parking Structure, 55 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville, and will be open to accept payments by check only, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on November 2nd, 5th,

7th, 8th, 9th and 13th. Residents who prefer to mail in their payments should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments. Payments being made by mail should include the first half stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject payment. “For taxpayers wishing immediate access to 2012-2013 School tax information, our online system is available through a link on the Town website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Residents may view current tax bills, print out a hard copy, or pay taxes with an ACH check

payment or credit card. Please be aware there is a service fee for paying taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).” Receiver Stefanich reminds residents that school taxes are set by their local school districts, and the Town of Oyster Bay is not involved in that process. Any questions related to school tax rates and amounts should be addressed to the resident’s school district. The telephone number for each school district is printed on the back of the school tax bill. When calling the Tax Office, 516.624.6400, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

(NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what you clean with: Never use ammonia—based productsor cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange— on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface C l e a n e r ( w w w. j a w s c l e a n s . c o m ) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flatscreen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 4th Annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. On Saturday, October 20th, the Town will host the second fall family festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Park, at the corner of Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. As in years past, this fun-filled event takes place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first festival was held earlier this month at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, in Jericho. “This annual free event features fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, bouncies and games, apple cider and popcorn,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to explore and have the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, which they will then be given the opportunity to decorate. In addition, children will have the opportunity to enjoy a hayride, and are welcome to come in costumes. Don’t forget to bring your camera for photo opportunities.” The Supervisor noted that this event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division. For more information on the festival, call the CAPA Division at 516.797.7925 or visit the Town’s Web s i t e , www.oysterbaytown.com. “I hope you come down and enjoy the Town’s Annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “This will be a fun day to spend with the family at one of our beautiful Town parks.”

The National Family Partnership® (NFP) announces the national contest for its 27th Annual Red Ribbon Week®, October 23rd31st. Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. In 1985 after the murder of a DEA agent, parents, youth and teachers in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a

symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction caused by drugs. This year, families can get involved by entering a contest to promote awareness in their neighborhoods and win a drug prevention grant for their schools. Families can enter Red Ribbon Week’s® contest to win a $1,000 grant for their school and a new

iPad for their home. To participate in the contest families and students will decorate the front of their homes with this year’s message: “The Best Me Is Drug FreeTM.” Studies show that substance abuse risks lessen when parents talk to their children about the dangers of drugs, and that is the goal of this year’s contest: to encourage families to talk about prevention.

Red Ribbon Week decoration, then upload to www.redribbon.org/contes t or www.facebook.com/RedRi bbonWeek by Nov. 2 (must be parents or 18+ to upload photos). The voting begins! Ask family and friends to vote for your entry at www.redribbon.org/vote November 2nd-16th. Ten lucky winners from regions across the U.S. will win. Winners will be announced at events at their winning schools in December. “Students will once again take Red Ribbon Week’s® message of prevention home to their neighborhoods with this national contest,” said the NFP’s Volunteer President Peggy Sapp. “By decorating their homes together with this year’s Red Ribbon theme, families carry the message to their communities.” The nation’s oldest and

largest drug prevention campaign reaches more than 80 million people nationwide. The DEA is cosponsoring this year’s national contest. “DEA is excited to partner with the National Family Partnership® on this contest that empowers communities to come together to talk about the drug problem,” said DEA Administrator Michele M. Leonhart. “Red Ribbon Week® is also when we honor DEA Special Agent Enrique ‘Kiki’ Camarena, who made the ultimate sacrifice to keep our communities safe.” Adds the NFP’s Peggy Sapp: “Take the Red Ribbon Week® pledge across America to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug free.” V i s i t www.redribbon.org/contes t for contest information.

Grant Received The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is set to receive a $20,000 grant from the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services to support its addiction services in Suffolk County, thanks to the efforts of NYS Assemblyman Bob Sweeney. Specifically, the grant funds the expansion of LICADD’s Start2Stop program, which provides drug and alcohol information, solutionfocused counseling, peer support and treatment referrals to local residents of all ages. Start2Stop is a twelve week program directed to those who have had involvement with drug or alcohol use, and may have had professional or personal consequences, but not as a violent or high-level offense. With a well publicized opiate crisis gripping Long Island and a documented upswing in impaired driving and boating, LICADD Executive

Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds says support for Start2Stop comes at the perfect time. “I am grateful to Assemblyman Sweeney for helping us make this program more accessible to local residents before their use of drugs and alcohol accelerates,” he said. “This proactive approach and timely intervention will help make Suffolk County a safer and healthier place.” “Long Island continues to experience a number of well-publicized tragedies due to substance abuse. The Start2Stop program helps participants get control of their substance abuse problem before it escalates into a tragedy. While we need strong laws to deal with the results of DWI and BWI incidents, it is far better to prevent those tragedies from happening in the first place. That’s what this grant is intended to do,” said Assemblyman Sweeney.

Naturally Lowering Cholesterol

(NAPSI)—If living a healthier life is your cup of tea, you may be interested in an easy way to improve your health—using the natural antioxidant powers of tea. Almost half of all Americans are overweight and have dangerously high levels of cholesterol. Heart attacks are still the No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk

may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription

alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an allnatural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. For more information on TeaFlavin, visit www.teaflavin.com or call (800) 876-4332.

Understanding Small Loans (NAPSI)—For many, the answer to a financial dilemma can come from asking the right questions. To help, a public interest organization has come up with four quarterly booklets, with worksheets and self-assessment information, for those considering personal loans. The first, “Understanding Personal Loans,” helps potential borrowers find answers to six important questions:

• Is a personal loan for me? • Can I afford a loan? • What happens when I apply? • What happens if I’m late with a payment? • What terms should I understand before taking out a loan? • Which laws protect me? This financial literacy initiative that aims to educate the more than 30 million underbanked households in the U.S.

about short-term, smalldollar loans was launched by the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation. The materials are online at www.afsaef.org/personalloa ns101. Printed versions are available from the American Financial Services Association Education Foundation, 919 Eighteenth Street, NW, Suite 300, Washington, DC, 20006-5517; (202) 4668611.

During the three-day conference, Stony Brook University representatives led by Jenny Hwang, PhD, Director of University Counseling, presented their progress in harm reduction and helping students make safer choices regarding alcohol use. The team conducted a presentation for their peer schools on “Think Again,” a student-developed social norms campaign designed

to inform the campus community of alcohol use on campus. Campus statistics show that students overestimate the percentage of their peers who are engaged in heavy or high-risk drinking. Since 2011, Stony Brook University has been a member of the National College Health Improvement Project (NCHIP), a nationwide learning collaborative that

Campus improvement teams participated in strategysharing sessions on the subjects of “pre-gaming,” off-campus parties and other high-risk behaviors. According to statistics from the National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, these high-risk behaviors result in the death of

approximately 1,800 college students across the nation each year and contribute to hundreds of thousands of injuries, sexual assaults and academic failures. Since joining the collaborative, Stony Brook has seen several positive improvements in student health and safety across campus, including an increase in Red Watch Band membership, Stony Brook’s bystander intervention program, and increased help-seeking behavior by students. A team of students, faculty, staff and administration from Stony Brook University joined similar teams from 31 other colleges and universities from across the country for three days in Washington D.C., to learn from and share with one another about improving the health of their students by reducing harms associated with high-risk drinking.

seeks to combat high-risk drinking behavior on college campuses through data-driven, communitywide efforts involving several areas of the University. The goals are to increase effective education and prevention models, ensure enforcement of policies and laws, and early intervention for those at risk. “We’re seeing the impact of institutional commitment and thoughtful, systematic engagement of our students to help increase the health and safety of the campus community,” said Dr. Hwang. “It’s not about dumping information into students’ heads - it’s about engaging them in a process as
