Condensing The Collections By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them? And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

MAMMA MIA! at the

purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

HIGH EFFICIENCY OIL TO GAS BIASI OIL BOILER CONVERSIONS

The Farmingdale School District’s Legislative Action Committee visited Senator Kemp Hannon in Albany this year to discuss multiple aspects of educational funding such as regional cost differences. Students, administrators and members of the Board of Education spoke on behalf of the District to voice concerns to state legislators. Many members of our community, including our students, have concerns with the potential implications these changes may have on our schools,” said John Lorentz, Farmingdale School District Superintendent. “The Legislative Action Committee’s visit with Senator Hannon was a great opportunity for our community to become more active in government related topics.” First and foremost, the representatives urged state officials to restore hightax aid to the 2012-2013 funding levels. Governor Cuomo’s recent proposal calls for a reduction of $1.4 million in high-tax aid to the Farmingdale School District and a $37 million reduction in total high tax aid to all Long Island school districts. The Legislative Action Committee urged Senator Hannon and other state legislators to recognize regional cost differences to ensure that Long Island schools have the same buying power as dollars allocated to schools in other regions. Another topic of discussion was the District’s proposal for a Teacher Retirement System Reserve that could help to smooth out spiking rates from year to year. The Farmingdale School District encourages community members to become involved in the issues that affect our schools. The next Board of Education meeting will take place on April 10th. For more information on the Farmingdale School District’s school lunch program, visit the District’s website at www. farmingdaleschools.org.
