Farmingdale - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 20, 2013

SALTZMAN CELEBRATES - The Farmingdale School District’s Saltzman East Memorial Elementary School recently celebrated their 100th day of school. To make the occasion unique and memorable, students participated in multiple academic events centered around the number 100 and dressed up like they were 100 years old. The school’s Shared Decision Making Committee was responsible for putting together the day’s fun activities. who likes to recycle. Ms. Andes then gave her students the challenge of creating something out of items that they otherwise would have thrown out. The project resulted in many

great items, including an angel made out of a nut container, a lantern crafted out of a plastic carton, a car created from a milk carton and a purse fashioned out of duct tape.

On March 7th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Alzheimer’s Disease Education Conference and Expo 2013 at the Melville Marriott. Approximately 60 vendors and 300 people were in attendance for this event. The conference featured numerous breakout sessions, including a caregiver discussion panel facilitated by ADRC Instructor Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, who encouraged caregivers to discuss the challenges and experiences they encountered when

caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and a session on “Legal Planning and Eldercare Concerns for the Caregiver and Person with Dementia” presented by Frank Buquicchio, Esq, Member, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee. This year’s keynote speaker was Bobbie Braun, a local artist, designer and philanthropist. During her speech, Ms. Braun talked about what it was like to care for parents who were living with Alzheimer’s Disease. She shared with those in attendance the ups and downs, the humor

and the complexity of finding the right care for her parents. Thrown into her care giving role on a moment’s notice, Ms. Braun worked diligently to develop what is an evolving long-term care plan while advocating on behalf of her parents to ensure quality care and maintaining the flexibility needed to address a moving disease process. For more information about ADRC, please contact Mary Ann MalackRagona at 631.820.8068 or visit www.ADRCinc.org.

Hundreds of attendees filled the pews at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre on March 10th for a special Mass of Celebration to mark the 100th Anniversary of Mercy Medical Center. Established on the Feast of St. Patrick, March 17th, 1913 in a 13-bed former sanitarium in Hempstead by the Congregation of the Infant Jesus, the Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, Mercy has grown and developed over the

decades into one of Nassau County’s leading medical institutions. The mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, who expressed thanks for the century of compassionate care made possible at Mercy by the hard work and dedication of not only the hospital’s physicians, nurses and support staff, but also The Friends of Mercy and the Council of Leagues

Outreach Dinner

Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Residents are invited to send in their photos for consideration for use in a Town publication. According to Town Councilman Joe Muscarella, the current season of winter transforming into spring presents many opportunities for photos to be taken. “If you flip through the pages of the 2013 Town Calendar you’ll see some of the many great photos submitted by our residents,” Councilman Muscarella said. “I encourage everyone to start taking pictures, or go through photos you’ve already taken, depicting the people, places, community events and scenery throughout the Town of Oyster Bay for use in upcoming Town publications.” The Councilman went on to say that photos

You may be asked to supply a waiver if your photo is selected. “The Town of Oyster Bay is a photographer’s dream, and the remaining winter and start of spring will provide countless opportunities to take beautiful pictures,” Councilman Muscarella said. “In addition to our many parks and beaches, the Town of Oyster Bay boasts a wealth of historic sites, museums and other places of interest that could be the subject of a great photo. So, whether photography is your passion, your hobby, or just an occasional pastime, grab your camera, go outside and start snapping.”

The Town of Oyster Bay has cancelled its annual Tobay Beach Dune Stabilization Project due to the damage sustained at Tobay Beach by Hurricane Sandy, Town Supervisor John Venditto announced. Although this program is being cancelled for its original date of Saturday, March 16th, Supervisor Venditto stressed that the Town intends to hold this long standing, environmentally important volunteer project for residents of all ages, after restoration efforts have been completed at Tobay Beach. “The cancellation of the

Dune Stabilization project represents an unfortunate ramification of this unprecedented storm, because this event provides an excellent opportunity for community groups and volunteers to lend a hand in an important preservation effort,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Although the effects of Hurricane Sandy have been felt far and wide throughout the Town of Oyster Bay, this is something that we will come back from, and the Town will continue to be intricately involved in clean-up, restoration, and outreach efforts. The Supervisor added

that at present, contractors are in the process of rebuilding the dunes that had been in place on Tobay’s ocean side, in order to aid in future beach preservation efforts. This process, along with the rebuilding of the pavilion and decking that had been heavily damaged during Hurricane Sandy, will bring Tobay Beach back to its former glory in time for the summer season. For those seeking more information, contact the Department of Environmental Resources at 516.677.5748, or visit oysterbaytown.com.

The 20th Annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont State Park will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Egg hunts will be every 15 minutes, beginning at 12:15 p.m. Children will be hunting for eggs in three groups: ages 4 and under,

ages 5-6, and ages 7-9. This event is co-sponsored by radio stations WBAB, WBLI and the Natural Heritage Trust. In addition to the hunt, there will be a petting zoo, temporary tattoos, pony rides, environmental crafts, a visit by the Spring Bunny

and more. All activities are free. Belmont Lake State Park is located in North Babylon at Exit 38 on the Southern State Parkway. For additional information, contact 631.321.3510.

Barbara Ralph’s thirdgrade class at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District has been collecting empty water bottles to benefit Wellspring Water Inc., a nonprofit organization founded by 2010 Plainedge graduate Kimberleigh Costanzo. After a mission trip to Africa with her college in May 2011, Kimberleigh and her mother Gillian decided to collect water bottles and recycle them for five cents until they had enough money to pay for the installation of a well in the Changa Changa Community School in Zambia. Kimberleigh had personally visited the community school and witnessed for herself the need for the well. Having accomplished that goal, Wellspring Water intends to continue providing water sources to people in need while reducing the build-up of plastics and

six large garbage bags of plastic bottles to benefit the cause. Kimberleigh visited the third-graders to pick up the donation and explain the mission of her work.

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. BA

Participating in life is what makes living worthwhile. Life with a hearing loss creates problems, not only for the person with the hearing loss, but for their family and friends. The person with the hearing loss often times feels isolated from others.

New people and unfamiliar settings will create dread for the person with the hearing loss. Friends and family of the hearing impaired may notice a change in his/her personality. They may appear to be distracted, forgetful, depressed, angry or inattentive. Arguments can and will erupt over the setting of the TV volume, the frequent need for conversations to be repeated or conversations that are misunderstood, leaving all parties irritated and resentful. Often times, family members will become the hearing impaired person’s interpreter by repeating or rephrasing conversations that the person with the hearing loss has missed. If a hearing problem causes someone to feel embarrassed when meeting new people, causes frustration when talking to family members, causes difficulty hearing TV, the radio, on the telephone, or hearing others in noisy listening situations, they need a hearing evaluation. Hearing loss is a problem for every generation. 3 of every 10 people over the age of 45 have a hearing loss. After the age of 65, it rises to 4 out of every 10 people. There are many reasons why people lose their hearing: exposure to noise, exposure to ototoxic medication, head injuries, fever, infection, or as a result of the aging process. A comprehensive evaluation can determine the degree of hearing loss and the necessity for medical intervention. Unfortunately, the most common type of hearing loss is sensorineural, where the hair cells in the cochlea are no longer functioning

If someone you know exhibits signs of having a hearing problem, it is important to be patient and understanding with them. However, the most important thing you can do is to motivate them to seek help. Doing so will dramatically improve the quality of life for them and those around them.
