The Farmingdale Community Summit Council will be holding their 11th Annual Expo and Health Fair on Thursday, March 21st at the Farmingdale High School gym from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Representatives from many of our local service organizations and local merchants will once again be on hand to share information about what they do and what services and products they offer. “Our community is truly one that provides a world of opportunity,” stated Ken Ulric, Summit President. “The Expo provides a chance for our local groups to show off what makes them and therefore our community – special.” This year the PTA is holding a Blood Drive during the event and the very popular Taste of Farmingdale (highlighting our local eateries) is returning again. Also appearing again this year, will be the Antique Road Show where you can bring your “valuable” household items to see their worth. The Summit is excited to announce that The Canine Companion dogs are making their first appearance at the Expo. Exhibitors will include local hospitals and doctors, nutrition and wellness providers. Back To Basics

FIRE DEPT GRANTS - Rep. Pete King meets with Farmingdale Village Mayor Ralph Ekstrans and Farmingdale Fire Department Chief Skip Schumeyer to discuss By: Jamie Lynn Ryan practically standing on your decided that he needed to be brakes while in the right traffic somewhere else, and proceeded Homeland Security grants for the fire department, which are vital to protecting the The more I drive, the more lane as you suddenly realize to back up on the Service Road residents of Farmingdale.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS - The Sons of Italy in America Columbus Lodge #2143 recently held their installation of officers at the Stuart Thomas Manor. Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto was on hand to present Outgoing President Keith Wilson and Ladies Auxiliary Outgoing President Janet Marotto with citations recognizing their dedication to Columbus Lodge.Pictured: TOB Councilman Joseph Pinto, NC Legislator Joseph Belesi, Janet Marotto, Keith Wilson, NC Legislator Michael Venditto and Ralph Wilson.

I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than

your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently

and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

One of our greatest joys is when families throughout the region or visiting Long Island get to enjoy the park and spend quality time together. Bringing people together — what could be better? It is sure to be our best season yet,” said Diane Novak, Co-Owner and President of the Long Island Game Farm. One of the best times of the year to visit the Game Farm is early spring, when many of the animals have given birth to newborns. The Game Farm is expecting the births of new animals. “Once you walk into the Game Farm, take in the beauty of springtime and you may witness the magic of birth,” said Ms. Novak. by the Town to residents who wish to raise their homes, and general height restrictions do not apply as the height of homes will be measured from the foundation plate, as established by federal flood plain maps. As such, no fees will be charged for this process, provided that homes are restored to their pre-existing conditions. This does not apply if residents are seeking to do any additional work to their home, including extensions or expansions. “The Department of Planning and Development has established a hotline for residents who have questions pertaining to home restoration,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Homeowners can call 516.624.6397 for additional information, or visit the Department of Planning and Development.” The Department of Planning and Development is located

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto reminds residents who are rebuilding their homes following the events of Hurricane Sandy that the Town is committed to expediting the process of restoration for homeowners. The Supervisor explained that the Town has waived the standard requirements for homeowners who are restoring their homes to their pre-existing condition. “Residents who are rebuilding in-kind will be given a Letter of Authorization, which allows them to begin work immediately,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Accordingly, no fees will be charged.” The Supervisor noted that while the disbursement of federally funded disaster aid or insurance proceeds is not in the Town’s control, Oyster Bay has formulated an expedited process for residents requiring paperwork and guidance in relation to building and restoring their homes. “As has been the case since the immediate aftermath of the storm, the Town of Oyster Bay has been committed to doing everything in its power to help affected homeowners,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “As such, the Town’s Department of Planning and Development has streamlined the process for those homeowners requiring any paperwork necessary to restore their homes.” Residents who have sustained damages valued at more than $10,000 require their plans to be submitted by a licensed engineer, and those with damages over $20,000 require them to be stamped and sealed by a licensed architect. Those who require plumbing and electrical work will need to receive an inspection certificate for any necessary repairs, which must be performed by a licensed professional. No fees will be charged

Creative Expressions She Doesn’t Look Back The Gallery Anymore

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My babies are growing up What they used to love me doing Is just embarrassing now My little boy walks down the hall From a distance, all I see is his back Then suddenly, he turns to see if I’m still there And gives me a wave My heart melts ‘Cause his big sisters They don’t look back anymore She doesn’t look back I guess it’s okay It means she’s growing up In every sense of the way Sometimes those moments get lost Day to day But when my little guy looked back It reminded me of so many yesterdays I drop her off to her hourly job She tells me not to stop in front It’s too embarrassing Getting a lift from my mom She scurries in through the door She doesn’t look back anymore My baby is getting ready to dance Her tutu and make-up on I used to walk her backstage And she’d glance and I’d give her a wink You’re going to do great Don’t be scared Just look straight ahead Don’t look at the floor Now, she doesn’t look back anymore They say you have to let go Cut those apron strings

No one told me the pain that would bring ‘Cause she doesn’t look back anymore She packed her bags And we flew and flew A thousand miles later We were at her new school I tried to be strong And decorated her dorm I knew soon It wouldn’t be long To say our goodbyes I didn’t want to ruin her excitement Being on her own for the first time I put on my shades To hide my tears I could feel her stare As I drove away The pain is too great Nothing will be the same as before I’ve had to learn To not look back anymore Hold on to those moments When their sweet little eyes Search for you in a crowd

One day as I was walking with my cane And time for me to go I glanced up And behind the curtain I could see those big brown eyes She was looking back To make sure I was okay Saying a silent prayer That I’d make it home safe on my way My baby looked back today

Farmingdale - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 13, 2013 20

National Semi-Finalist

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. recently congratulated Farmingdale High School Senior Nakul Gupta on being chosen as a national semi-finalist in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search. “This is an extraordinary accomplishment and Nakul should be very proud to have earned a place among the nation’s top young scientists. Nakul’s tireless efforts and many hours of hard work and research have advanced him into an elite group of young men and

women. This incredibly bright, hard-working young man will no doubt accomplish great things as he enters his collegiate years,” said Senator Fuschillo. Participants from all across the country, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands compete in the talent search, considered the nation’s most prestigious pre-college science competition. Nakul is one of only 300 semifinalists chosen from entries nationwide. Nakul’s research project

Little League Softball Day

can potentially help find practical solutions to cardiac problems involving Long QT Syndrome and cardiac arrhythmia. Senator Fuschillo presented Nakul with a copy of a legislative resolution which was recently passed by the Senate in honor of his accomplishment. With the passage of this resolution, sponsored by Senator Fuschillo, Nakul’s name and achievement will forever be part of the New York State Senate’s official record.

Little League Baseball and Softball, along with St. Joseph’s College will team up on Saturday, March 30th, to welcome Little League Softball players to Little League Softball Day. Little League Softball Day will be held at the Outdoor Athletic Complex, 246 Sunrise Highway South Service Road in Patchogue, home of St. Joseph’s College softball. The Golden Eagles will host a game against Lehman College Lightning at 1 p.m. Little Leaguers, their parents and local league volunteers are encouraged to attend the game. The players will come dressed in their Little League uniform jerseys, and following the game will be permitted on to the field to meet the collegiate players and coaches. “As a way of recognizing Little League Softball, and in appreciation of the college softball

experience, Little League International is reaching out to communities by having Little League Softball Days,” Stephen D. Keener, president and chief executive officer of Little League Baseball and Softball, said. “For the seventh straight year, this initiative will afford young athletes of all ages the chance to enjoy the game of softball at its finest. They will have the complete game experience from the warm-ups to game’s end.” Colleges and universities throughout the United States, including the University of Washington; UCLA; the University of Arizona; the University of Tennessee; and the University of Michigan, have hosted similar events in recent years. Little League Softball has over 360,000 players worldwide and is played in nearly all U.S. states. Each summer, Little League International

operates four World Series tournaments for softball, in which world champions in the divisions of Little League (ages 11-12), Junior League (12-14), Senior League (13-16) and Big League Softball (1418) are crowned. Each of the championship games in those tournaments are televised on ESPN or ESPN2. For more information on Little League Softball Day, contact Al Sciangula, Head Coach- St. Joseph’s Softball (asciangula@sjcny.edu) or Tanya Interrante, Asst. Director of Softball- North Babylon Youth League (nbylsoftball.@yahoo. com). Little League Baseball and Softball is the world’s largest organized youth sports program, with nearly 2.7 million players and one million adult volunteers in every U.S. state and scores of other countries.

The day’s event featured brave souls taking the plunge into Oyster Bay Harbor to raise money for ucpn and its many outstanding programs and services. An independent, not-forprofit health agency, ucpn, endeavors to improve the quality of life for people with cerebral palsy

and others with severe disabilities and multiple service needs,” explained Supervisor Venditto. “The organization, which was founded in 1948, also seeks to prevent cerebral palsy and minimize its effects.” Sharing in the festivities along with the ucpn Polar Bear were Robbie Zafiratos, Robbie’s Father, Gus Zafaritos, Max Schmuel and ucpn Executive Director Bob McGuire.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano and Nassau County District Court Judge Rhonda Erin Fischer recently joined in presenting a Town citation to Andrew Hall, Head Martial Arts Instructor for the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Police Activity League. Andrew was recognized for his efforts in coordinating a charity “Kick-A-Thon,” enlisting the support of local businesses and residents to assist families facing financial difficulties. The Kick-A-Thon raised funds to help defray the costs for needy children to participate in the martial

arts program. The OBENPAL Karate Program provides a safe forum for the personal development of the community’s children, stressing such values as respect, discipline, courage and integrity while also teaching goal-setting skills

and instilling a positive work ethic. The “Kick-A-Thon” demonstrated to the young students about the importance of community involvement and helping others in need.
