here is a special visitor in the kindergarten hallway of Plainedge School District’s John H. West Elementary School where a life-sized Abraham Lincoln has “come alive.” The kindergartners at West learned that Lincoln loved to read and was very honest. During class, students drew portraits of Lincoln wearing his famous black stovepipe hat and recreated his childhood log cabin.

Long Islanders can put their old bicycles to good use by donating them to Pedals for Progress, a program that rescues unwanted American bicycles and sends them to communities overseas. On Saturday, April 6th, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., members of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers of Long Island with the children and teen programs of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island will accept donations of bicycles and sewing machines at the Ethical Humanist Society, 38 Old Country Road, Garden City (at the western end of Old Country Road, next to the blue water tower). In recent years Pedals for Progress has shipped 25,450 bikes to Nicaragua and 5,833 to Ghana, as well as thousands of bikes to Guatemala, Uganda and El Salvador. In many countries, having a bicycle can have a critical effect on whether or not you are able to get to a job or school; it has been found that income goes up 14 percent when a family has a bicycle. founding member of the Center for Communicating Science, noted that the question “What is time?” is a deep one. “I hope that what the scientists do is not take this as a challenge to explain the inexplicable, but to explore the mysterious,” Alda said. The Flame contest began last spring with Alda’s own childhood query: What is a flame? This year, the contest collected hundreds of questions from current 11-year-olds. Several asked “what is time?” or related questions, such as: How would you make a time machine? Why can’t you go back in time? Why does everyone age? How can you tell what time it is without looking at a clock? How many dimensions are there? How did time begin? “We don’t expect you to have the definitive answer,” said Elizabeth Bass, CCS director. “We would like entries to explore the

nature of time from any scientific perspective – from physics to psychology, chemistry to computer science. Speculation is fine, as long as it’s clear you’re speculating. If you can intrigue kids, teach them something, and make them want to know more about the nature of time, that’s terrific.” Last year, in the first year of the Flame Challenge, scientists around the world submitted hundreds of answers. The winning entry, a cartoon video with an original song, was created by Ben Ames, a physics doctoral student at the University of Innsbruck. For more information on entering or judging the contest, or to see last year’s top entries, please visit www. FlameChallenge.org. The annual Flame Challenge contest is part of the Center for Communicating Science’s mission of helping

scientists communicate more effectively with the public. Located in Stony Brook University’s School of Journalism, the Center gives innovative Communicating Science courses for graduate students in the sciences, and conducts workshops around the country. Alan Alda is a founding member of the Center and a Visiting Professor in the School of Journalism. The Flame Challenge is being generously sponsored this year by two nonprofit scientific societies: the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The American Chemical Society is chartered by the U.S. Congress and has more than 164,000 members, making it the world’s largest singlediscipline scientific society. St. Luke’s Lutheran Church ushered in the Year of the Snake at their Chinese New Year Party held on February 1st. The entertainment included a Martial Arts Demonstration by David Needham and Jayson DeLucia from Lee’s Tae Kwando on Merritt Avenue in Farmingdale. They had all the guests, both children and adults, participating in various skills and exercises. After a lesson from Jayson, about seven children broke boards with their hands. Lisa Mormino, a student of Tae Kwan Do and Director of St. Luke’s Summer Camp, broke a board with a well placed kick. The Tae Kwan Do activities were followed by a sumptuous three course meal prepared by Wing Hing Chinese Kitchen of Farmingdale. The menu included Chinese noodles with sweet sauce, pork and shrimp egg rolls, lo mein, pork fried rice, chicken and broccoli, beef

and Chinese vegetables, fortune cookies and ice cream. The party culminated with the traditional Lion Dance with many of the guests joining in the parade of the Chinese Zodiac Animals. All the

children and all the guests born in a year of the Snake received red gift bags containing gold coins. It was a wonderful evening of fellowship and fun for all ages.

Rotary Club News

The Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary Club is pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for the 2nd Annual Rotary Appreciation Day at Citifield on May 11th. Tickets are available at www.mets.com/rotary for immediate purchase. The Club has secured the Big Apple section of Citifield for Saturday, May 11th, 2013 when the Mets host the Pittsburgh Pirates at 1 p.m. The event is an affordable family activity for everyone. All proceeds from the event will fund the Rotarian mission including funding our annual scholarships for high school seniors. The first Rotary Appreciation Day, held on June 17th, 2012 was a major success. “When families, friends and local businesses come together for a charitable event like this we are seeing the very best Long Island has to

offer,” says club president Brendan Mahoney. Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary is seeking Long Island businesses to help sponsor the event by advertising their business in a journal to be distributed to all attendees on game day. The journal also serves as a memorial or sentimental message/ picture board for any contributors who wish to buy ad space. Interested parties can contact Tony Vitale at 516.420.0740 for more information on how to become an event sponsor or buy message space. Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary encourages all interested parties to visit their Facebook page for information, updates and a link to purchase tickets online. Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary projects include donations to Farmingdale Community Summit’s

Family Fund to help families in need throughout the community, funding of six annual scholarships to deserving high school seniors, donations of food, toys and turkey dinners during the holidays as well as a proud sponsor of youth Farmingdale Baseball. Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary also participates in Rotocare, whereby volunteer medical care is provided to county residents in need and Gift of Life, which provides life-saving heart surgery to children in need throughout the world. Farmingdale Breakfast Rotary meetings are held every Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m. at the Library. Meetings are open to the public. Far too often, we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life; the fact that, in an instant, things can change, throwing any sense of normalcy and routine into complete upheaval. Whether by the hands of Mother Nature or some otherworldly force, many of these factors are far beyond our control, making it all the more crucial that we embrace those things we do, in fact, have control over. One of my favorite films back in my high school Political Science class was Dead Poets Society, simply for the fact that its mantra of “Carpe Diem” seemed to make perfect sense. Seize the

day, capture the moment… live each day to the fullest. You just never know what may be around the corner. Certainly, there are times when something positive is on the horizon; surprises need not always portend tragedy and aggravation. It just seems that, on the whole, we as a society tend to take our lives – and those most important to us – for granted, never anticipating a day when this sense of contentment (read: complacency) might be turned upside down. What can we do to prepare for this eventuality? Well, nothing and everything – all at the same time. There are those circumstances which reach far beyond our control;

the key is to take the given situation and make the most of it, and to move forward having learned something about ourselves. If this means taking more time to appreciate the little things in life…or savoring each moment with those we love… or simply reaching toward a long-unrealized goal… this is progress. This is positive. This is appreciation. This is not to say we will not each continually be faced with new obstacles each and every day – some minor, some life-changing – but at the very least, we will be better prepared to deal with them. Carpe Diem always… Those who seize the day are those who have few regrets.

Headmaster’s Ball

Over three hundred guests and dignitaries, dancing to the strains of Viennese Waltzes and dining on delicacies in the glittering rooms of the NYIT de Seversky Mansion, made the Inaugural Headmaster’s Ball not only an enjoyable affair but, more importantly, the most successful fundraiser in the history of All Saints Regional Catholic School. Held on Saturday, February 2nd, at the close of Catholic Schools Week, the Ball’s success signaled a broad and vigorous commitment to sustaining Catholic elementary and middle education on the Gold Coast. After a cocktail hour, the Ball officially opened with a brief ceremony in which the Abbot Primate, His Excellency, the Most Reverend Bernhard Backovksy, Provost of the Abbey of Klosterneuburg, Austria, and the Headmaster, the Very Reverend Dom Elias Carr, conferred on the local honorees a silver

Leopoldipfennig (a “Saint Leopold Penny” which for centuries has been given to those who have carried out service to God and to the Abbey); this year’s honorees are Jean Strafford from Saint Boniface, Sea Cliff; Robert and Marta Jakobsze of Saint Hyacinth, Glen Head; Sister Maureen Morgan, RSM, from Saint Mary, Roslyn; Joseph Caldwell from Saint Patrick, Glen Cove; and Gina and Gary Galante from Saint Rocco, Glen Cove. The Provost and the Headmaster next thanked Sr Joanne Callahan, OSU, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, for her trust in the Canons and her support for All Saints, conferring on her a wooden carved statue of the founder of the Abbey, St. Leopold of Austria. Following the encouraging words from the Provost, who not only brought his greetings and Viennese charm to the evening, but also

Planning For The Future

announced the Abbey’s donation of 10,000 Euros (over $13,000) to All Saints, His Excellency, the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, speaking in English and in German, expressed his joy and gratitude for the work of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine in Glen Cove, who arrived in June, 2011 to assume the pastoral care of the parishes of Saint Patrick and Saint Rocco, and his hope for growing bonds between Rockville Centre and Klosterneuburg over the years to come. In December, Bishop Murphy made the trip to Klosterneuburg to ordain the Very Reverend Dom Gabriel Rach, now serving in Glen Cove, to the priesthood. With the speeches made and thanks given, the traditional call of “Alles Walzer!” (everybody waltz!) set the guests dancing and All Saints on the path to a grand future.
