With a home energy audit, you can obtain your Energy Star rating, important information regarding your energy usage, and identify sources of energy loss, which you can then take actions to correct. Resources for obtaining a professional energy audit or conducting one yourself can be found at energy.gov. 3. Beat the peak. Ask your utility provider about discounted rates. Some offer cheaper rates during parts of the day when general usage is down — think early in the day or late at night. Strategically tackle your energy bills by doing laundry and other energy-intensive chores at offpeak times. 4. Take advantage of tax credits. Making energy improvements to your home? The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 expanded the tax credit amounts and types of qualifying expenses available. From Groundhog Day to Black History Month to Valentine’s Day, there are plenty of significant events on the calendar in the second month of the year. Presidents’ Day is one such event. Presidents’ Day was initially established to honor the nation’s first president, George Washington. In fact, according to the United States Government, Presidents’ Day is still officially called “Washington’s Birthday” in section 6103(a) of title 5 of the United States Code governing holidays for federal employees. Washington’s Birthday was celebrated on February 22. After the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was passed, Washington’s Birthday was combined with the celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (February 12) to commemorate these two iconic figures in American history. The day also has become a way to promote retail sales during a historically slow time of year for retailers. As a result, the holiday is now celebrated each year on the third Monday

Directions Cook the bacon in a soup pot over medium heat until the fat is released and the bacon bits are crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Add the onions and garlic. Cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are a light golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the zucchini, cover the pot and cook until the zucchini starts to become translucent, about 5 minutes.

Cheesecake Makes A Decadent Valentine’s Day Treat
A
cheesecake recipe can be useful on any special occasion, especially on Valentine’s Day. For many people, cheesecake is not cheesecake without the addition of ricotta cheese. While ricotta is included in savory dishes like lasagna or manicotti, it is at home in desserts like cheesecake as well. Ricotta means “recooked” in Italian, and its production involves reheating the whey left over from making other cheeses, like mozzarella. Its texture is like a creamy/grainy, thick sour cream. Ricotta is included in this recipe for “Ricotta Cheesecake With Coffee and Chocolate” from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) by Nick Stellino, but it is not the only flavorful ingredient in this decadent dish. Coffee liqueur, chocolate, and lemon zest add to the complex profile — which only gets more pronounced if you prepare this cake a day in advance. www.longislandmediagroup.com

Directions: Preheat the oven to 325 F. Make a graham cracker crust by mixing the melted butter with the crumbs and sugar. Press into the bottom of a 9-inch springform pan. Mix the ricotta, sugar, egg yolks, cream, espresso, coffee liqueur, lemon zest, and salt until creamy. In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. Carefully fold the egg whites into the ricotta mixture. Stir in the chocolate morsels and pour onto the prepared crumb crust. Bake the cake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until just set in the middle. The cake will still seem wobbly but will be lightly browned and cracked around the edges. Remove the cake from the oven and cool on a rack for 30 minutes. Refrigerate the cheesecake for at least 6 hours or overnight before running a sharp knife along the edge of the cake and removing the pan. Cut into wedges to serve. Garnish with shaved chocolate and strawberries, if desired.

he Art League of Long Island (ALLI) proudly announces the grand reopening of its cherished space after enduring significant water damage in September due to flooding rains. Following an extensive and diligently managed reconstruction effort led by Anthony Lauto of Camber Strategies, ALLI stands renewed and fortified from the ground up. Despite facing challenges, the Art League community remained resilient. Temporary accommodations were arranged for classes and exhibitions through the "On The Move" campaign, hosted by supportive partners such as Spirit of Huntington, Nassau Community College's Art Department, Nassau County Museum of Art, and the Half Hollow Hills and Northport School Districts. Classes in ceramics, watercolor, pastels, jewelry, collage, and painting, not to mention our Teen and Young Artist programs found satellite homes. They also partnered with Empire Mazda of Huntington, to host an onsite Instructor’s Exhibition that had previously opened on January 20, 2024. The Members' Exhibition, opening on February 10, 2024, which marks the inaugural exhibit in the newly reconstructed Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. Simultaneously, the annual GoAPE High School Student Exhibition will be showcased at the end of the month in the Strolling Gallery. Classes resumed on February 6, 2024, in freshly repaired, cleaned, and painted studios, with a Grand Reopening Open House scheduled for March 23rd. Looking toward the future, ALLI is working hard to reestablish its LGBTQIA+, Mental Health and Veteran programs within the next month. The Art League has also hired new instructors and scheduled new classes, offering even more time slots and diversity. Marianne Della Croce, Executive Director, expresses her delight, stating, "The buzz of excitement is palpable among all staff and instructors as we return to the building. Nachos Make The Ideal Game Day Snack

ith the big game on the horizon, football fans would be wise to ready their culinary arsenal. Whether you’re hosting at home or going to a game watch at a fellow fan’s house, keep in mind that food and football are a great match. Loaded Beef Nachos Serves 4
Certain dishes have long since staked their claim on the game watch dinner and snacking tables, and nachos certainly need no introduction to football fans. Football fans can try this recipe for “Loaded Beef Nachos” courtesy of AllRecipes.com.
Taco Seasoning: 5

Nachos: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound ground beef 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced green bell pepper 1 10-ounce can diced tomatoes with green chiles (such as RO-TEL®) 1 15-ounce can Mexican-style corn (optional) 1 16-ounce can refried beans 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese, or as needed 4 ounces tortilla chips, or as needed Toppings (optional): 1⁄2 cup sour cream (optional) 1⁄2 cup salsa (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced black olives (optional) 1⁄4 cup sliced jalapeños (optional) 1⁄4 cup green onion www.longislandmediagroup.com
Directions: For taco seasoning: Stir paprika, garlic powder, cumin, onion powder, chili powder, oregano, and salt together in a small bowl; set aside. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat; cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir in onion and green pepper; cook and stir with oil and juices from browned meat until much of the liquid has evaporated, about 2 minutes more. Stir 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and Mexican-style corn into skillet. Season beef mixture to taste with prepared taco seasoning mix. Stir together the remaining 1⁄2 can diced tomatoes with chilies and refried beans in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high until heated through, stirring every 30 seconds, 1 to 3 minutes. To assemble nachos: Lay half of tortilla chips in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate, then drop teaspoons of refried beans onto chips, followed by meat mixture and shredded cheese. Repeat with remaining chips, beans, meat, and cheese to make a second layer. Microwave on high until cheese is melted and nachos are warm, 2 to 3 minutes. Top with sour cream, salsa, olives, jalapeños, and green onion as desired. EDITION EIGHT
