Our mission, as we publish our fifth Summer issue of Seasons® Magazine, is to provide our loyal readers with an array of special featured content to enhance this much-anticipated season of the year.

meetup location, such as a highly visible spot in a theme park (think roller coaster or Ferris wheel) or at the front gate. Upon arriving at your destination, go over the plan so it is fresh in everyone’s mind.

It takes mere seconds for curious children to wander off, and as the minutes tick by and kids don’t return, parents may be overcome with anxiety.

Many parents have lost track of their children in crowded public places. Having a plan in place can save families anxiety when traveling through crowded locations.

Take an up-to-date photo. Snap a digital head-to-toe picture the day of the trip. This can make it easier for authorities to identify lost children. In a stressful situation, parents may forget what their children were wearing when they went missing. A photo taken the day of the event can help authorities.

Dress children in bright colors.

Dressing children in very bright colors makes them more visible in a crowd. Lime green, yellow and red clothing can help make children more noticeable.

Write down parental contact information. Some parents tuck a piece of paper with their cell phone numbers in their child’s pocket, while others write the number directly on a kid’s arm with a marker or pen. Some parents even apply temporary tattoos indicating their home and/or mobile numbers. Such efforts make it easy for authorities or other adults to contact parents if a child needs assistance.

Identify people children can look to for help. Kids who were taught “stranger danger” may hesitate to go up to other people and ask for help. Parents can identify lifeguards or workers who can assist them should kids become separated from their parents.

Assign an adult to each child.

It’s easy for one parent to think the other parent is watching. In a family of four, Mom might be watching Joseph while Dad is watching Caitlin. A clear plan means parents can focus their attention accordingly to keep kids safe.

Use a child safety harness. Safety harnesses can calm the nerves of parents worried about wandering toddlers. This device tethers a child to his or her parent or guardian, preventing kids from wandering off.

Parents never expect to lose their children, but losing kids in crowded public places is possible. Being prepared and acting calmly can help parents quickly find their lost children.

Establish an emergency plan.

Families should come up with a plan for reuniting if they get separated. This may include children going up to an authority figure for help or another mother with children. Families also can choose a

There’s various reasons to believe that being outdoors can be good for a person’s health. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical benefits, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration and reduce stress. A study from the St. Louis University School of Medicine also said that spending time outdoors can help a person sleep better.

The following are a few ways to increase time in the outdoors that do not require major commitments: Bike or walk to work. For those who live close to their offices, walking or cycling to work is a simple way to spend more time outdoors. People who take public transportation can get off the train or bus a few stops early to get some exercise and breathe some fresh air.

Lunch outside. Take your lunch hour outdoors rather than in an indoor cafeteria or restaurant. Office workers are urged to go to a park or green space to give their brains a rest from urban stimuli. Lunch is the ideal time to do just that.

Invest in a screen room at home.

A screened-in porch, lanai or other space can bridge the indoors to outside and serve as a restful place to enjoy some fresh air while being protected from insects and inclement weather.

Set strict “no device” times.

Schedule a time when devices are disconnected and the entire family enjoys some recreation outdoors.

Let kids get back to the basics of bike riding, skating, playing pick-up sports games outside with friends, and all of the activities parents enjoyed as youths.

Dine al fresco. Opt for outdoor seating at a favorite restaurant. This will provide an hour or more to take in the sights and breathe some fresh air while enjoying a meal.

Meet friends at outdoor places.

When engaging in recreational activities, plan them at outdoor venues, such as parks, beaches, town centers, boardwalks and other areas where everyone can have fun and still be outside.

Fresh air, sunshine and time spent in nature are good for the mind and body. People concerned that they’re spending too much time indoors should seek ways to spend more time outside whenever possible.

pon the arrival of warm weather, many individuals prefer to spend their free time outside, relishing the fresh air and sunshine and evenings spent under the stars.

But cracked patios and makeshift chairs and tables may not establish the desired ambiance. An outdoor entertaining area that offers the same amenities found inside a home can make outdoor retreats both comfortable and functional.

Creative planning can help homeowners design dream areas

Establish Goals As with any project, the first step when coordinating outdoor living areas is to determine what you hope to achieve with the space. Will it be a location for lounging? Will people be cooking meals outside? Is the pool the central focus of the yard?

A large, flat yard can be divided into a series of patios that serve different purposes. Yards that are built on a hill or a slope can still be utilized with creative design elements, such as multi-tiered decking. By working with qualified designers, homeowners can bring their ideas to life.

Easy Food and Drink Access Traipsing in and out of the house for refreshments can become tiresome when entertaining outside.

In such situations, people also can track dirt inside of the home or leave a trail of pool water in their wake. Outdoor kitchens allow easy access to food and drink that makes outdoor entertaining much easier.

The experts at Angie’s List suggest outdoor kitchens be built close to the house to make it easier to run electricity and plumbing to the outdoor kitchen.

Fire it Up Many homeowners enjoy having fire elements in their yards. Lanterns and candles may create a romantic feel, but a fire pit or outdoor fireplace may help extend use of the outdoor entertaining area beyond summer.

Entertaining outdoors is made that much more enticing with a dream outdoor living space full of amenities.

Keep Summer Road Trips Safe

W

hen the outdoors beckons, road trips can be the perfect way to see the countryside, escape the routine of daily life and enjoy short vacations.

Plan your route. Map out the route before heading out. Be aware of potential road closures, obstacles or construction. Thanks to realtime GPS updates through mobile phones and other devices, some drivers like to rely on tech to get them through. But it’s important to realize service may be spotty in rural areas. Mapping a trip out in advance can save drivers from getting lost during mobile service interruptions.

Stock emergency preparedness items. Prior to a trip, drivers should make sure their vehicles are equipped with necessary safety items. Nearly half of Americans do not check that proper emergency items are stored in their vehicles prior to getting on the road. Before embarking on a road trip, make sure vehicles have a first aid kit, flashlight, water bottles, phone chargers, tirerepair tools, flares, jumper cables, towels and even an old backpack for storage.

Schedule a service call. Regular maintenance can keep vehicles from breaking down. Drivers should

Cut Blooms that Will Last the Longest

F

lowers may look beautiful in gardens and even when snipped and brought inside to brighten up a mantel or dining table.

Unfortunately, cut flowers have a finite shelf life. While cut blooms can’t live forever, certain varieties will outlast others. Choosing flowers wisely for wedding centerpieces or keepsakes can help couples enjoy selected flowers longer.

Peonies: Peonies can last for about a week or two when brought indoors. HGTV says to snip the stems when the buds are tight, wrap them in newspaper and store them in the refrigerator until you’re ready to arrange.

Zinnias: These bright blooms can last for three to four weeks and are best harvested in summer. Related to the sunflower, zinnias are available in a wide range of colors.

Chrysanthemums: Widely referred to as “mums,” these midsummer to late-fall flowers can last between three and four weeks after being cut.

Mums can be used to fill out floral displays because they tend to be inexpensive but durable flowers.

Coneflower: The purple coneflower is popular, but coneflowers are available in many colors aside from purple. Coneflowers attract butterflies and are beautiful in cut displays.

Although advice varies on how to keep cut flowers fresh the longest,

veteran florist Nic Faitos, senior partner at Starbright Floral Design in New York, who has provided his floral expertise for Reader’s Digest, says the best approach is to keep vase water clean. In addition, ProFlowers suggests keeping cut blooms in a cool room away from direct sunlight and heat.

Carnations: Another budgetfriendly flower, carnations are popular from early spring until late summer. Available in many hues, they can be used in conjunction with other blooms to create wellrounded floral displays that may last between two and three weeks.

Lilies: Lilies are traditional flowers that are beautiful to behold. Lilies are available in various sizes and colors and can be bought fresh year-round.

Lilies often last longer than a week after being cut. Look for lilies with tight buds, as such flowers tend to last the longest.

Directions: Place 10 to 12 bamboo skewers in water to cover at least 30 minutes before grilling. Prepare a mediumhot fire in a charcoal grill, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high.

If using the basting sauce, in a small saucepan, combine the soy sauce, mirin and sugar over medium-low heat and cook, stirring, until the sugar has completely dissolved and the liquid just begins to turn syrupy, 5 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside in a small bowl.

As each skewer is ready, place on a plate. Brush the chicken and onion pieces lightly on all sides with the oil.

Tips to Making Delicious Ice Cream at Home

ce cream is a favorite dessert across the globe. The average American consumes more than 23 pounds of ice cream per year, says the International Dairy Foods Association.

Making ice cream also is a fun way to bring the family together with the reward of a tasty prize for all of the effort. Here are some tips for making ice cream at home:

Avoid ice crystallization. Ice crystals in the ice cream can ruin texture by making ice cream crunchy.

Freezing ice cream quickly at very cold temperatures is essential. That means freezing the bowl and keeping the ingredient mix cold. Spinning the ice cream and transfering it quickly to the freezer helps keep ice crystals small.

Buy quality ingredients. Choose fresh, high-quality ingredients. Real vanilla beans or extract can produce better flavor than imitations. Select in-season berries and other fruits and, if possible, use organic milk.

All of these ingredients will blend together for fresh flavor.

Keep mix-ins small.

Mix-ins, like cookie pieces or cake crumbs, can add a different dimension to ice cream. Chill the ingredients and make sure they are small (roughly the size of chocolate chips). Add

Seasonal Selections Serve steak alongside a backyard barbecue staple A night of al fresco dining next to a grill in the backyard can be a great way to spend an evening. Nearly any type of food can be grilled, and steaks tend to be especially good when cooked over an open flame.

The following recipe for Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter is sure to please, especially when coupled with McNamara’s recipe for Baked Beans, a must-have staple for any backyard barbecue.

Baked Beans Serves 10 2 15-ounce cans navy beans, drained and rinsed 4 slices applewood- or pecan wood-smoked bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 cup diced yellow onion 11⁄2 cups ketchup 1⁄4 cup plus 2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses

Grilled Rib-Eye Steaks with Mushroom-Shallot Butter

1⁄2 cup packed dark brown sugar 11⁄4 teaspoons ground mustard

Serves 4 to 6 8 tablespoons (1 stick) plus 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 teaspoon ground cloves

1⁄2 cup sliced shallot

Preheat the oven to 350º F.

1 heaping cup sliced cremini mushrooms

Combine the bacon and onion in a medium Dutch oven. Slowly cook over medium heat until the onion is tender and the bacon is cooked, 8 to 10 minutes.

1 teaspoon kosher salt

2 large cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon coarsely chopped fresh thyme leaves

Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, whisk together the ketchup, molasses, sugar, ground mustard, ground cloves, and 1 cup water to combine. Add the cooked beans and pour the mixture into the pot with the bacon and onion.

Stir, cover and bake for 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes.

1⁄4 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed 1⁄4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper, plus more as needed 4 to 6 steaks (such as rib-eye, New York strip or porterhouse) Melt 1 tablespoon of the butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat.

Add the shallot and cook until golden and slightly crispy, 7 to 8 minutes.

Use a slotted spoon to transfer the shallot to a clean plate. In the same skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter, then add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper. Stir and cook until the mushrooms are softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to the plate with the shallot and let cool.

Add the salt and stir. Uncover and let sit for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

In a small bowl, use a rubber spatula to blend the remaining 8 tablespoons of butter with the cooled mushroom mixture until combined.

Place the butter in the center of a piece of parchment paper. Bring the edges together and press with your fingers to form the butter into a log. Roll and twist the ends before popping the butter into the refrigerator for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

Set the steaks on the counter for 30 minutes to bring them up to room temperature. Meanwhile, preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high or about 400º F. Season both sides of the steaks with 2 pinches of salt and a pinch of pepper.

Grill each steak for 6 to 8 minutes per side, depending on the thickness and the desired doneness. Tent with aluminum foil and let rest for 5 minutes.

The relaxed nature of summer often pervades Fourth of July festivities, but hosts can still take a crash course in summer hosting to ensure everyone has a good time.

Don’t try to break the mold. Some hosts may be tempted to think outside the box in regard to the foods and beverages they’ll serve at their Fourth of July parties. While hosts can still experiment and serve new foods and creative cocktails at their parties, many guests will be anticipating some Fourth of July staples, such as grilled hot dogs and hamburgers and cold beer and lemonade. Making sure such foods and beverages are served alongside more experimental fare won’t disappoint traditionalists, and those looking for something beyond the norm won’t be disappointed either.

Arrange transportation home for guests. To make sure everyone gets home safe and sound, arrange in advance for some guests to serve as designated drivers.

Hosts also should abstain from consuming alcohol during the party so they can get people home safe if necessary.

Keep a list of local taxi company phone numbers on hand and encourage guests who plan to consume alcohol to use ridesharing apps to get to and from the party.

Fourth of July festivities typically are less formal than other celebrations, but hosts still must plan their parties to ensure everyone has a fun, safe Independence Day.

Leave the fireworks to the professionals. Hosts should not succumb to pressure, real or perceived, to supply fireworks at their Fourth of July parties.

Fireworks can lead to injuries and accidents and are best left to the professionals who put on community fireworks shows.

Discourage guests from bringing their own fireworks by making it known they will be asked to leave the party if they do.
