Tips To Stay The Course With A New Diet

he dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make.

• Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation.

Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet.

• Consider eating less, but more frequently. Data is conflicting regarding eating smaller but more frequent meals. A 2015 study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics found that individuals with six or more eating occasions in 24 hours had a lower mean body mass index than those with four or fewer eating occasions in 24 hours. The researchers behind the study concluded that eating a larger number of small meals throughout the day may be associated with improved diet quality and lower BMI. Neighborhood News: Billy Joel Exhibit Now Open

T

he Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) has officially opened its long-anticipated exhibit—'Billy Joel: My Life, A Piano Man’s Journey.’ This exhibit is the first of its kind, as it is dedicated exclusively to a LIMEHOF inductee. The attraction opened to the public on November 24th and had a strong opening weekend with eager visitors who flocked to visit the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame, located at 97 Main Street in Stony Brook, NY. “It was a thrill to see a long line of eager fans at our opening,” said LIMEHOF Chairman Ernie Canadeo. “Over 500 fans of all ages, many from out of state, enjoyed the exhibit this past weekend, from families with young children to middle age and older adults. The smiles on everyone’s faces after they experienced the exhibit and the Hall of Fame was priceless. Billy Joel truly touches people of all ages, and this exhibit is testament to his legacy as Long Island’s favorite entertainer.”

1. In a small bowl, combine the flour, confectioners’ sugar, cocoa and baking soda. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press in the bottom of an ungreased 13-inch x 9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350 F for 12 to 15 minutes or until set.

2. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy. Add the milk, eggs and vanilla; beat until smooth. Stir in 3⁄4 cup toffee bits.

Pour over crust. Bake 18 to 22 minutes longer or until center is almost set.

Neighborhood News: Over $32,000 Raised For Long Island Veterans

T

he TCS New York City Marathon represents the best of New York—when all New Yorkers come together to support each other and cheer on their neighbors. For the seventh year, United Way of Long Island was selected as a charity partner for the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon.

United Way of Long Island’s Team Mission United runners finished the 26.2-mile course, raising over $32,000 in support of U.S. military veterans and their families on Long Island.

Every runner has their own unique story for why they run.

Christine Borg (Huntington, NY) Christine finished her first ever marathon first among the Mission United Team runners in three and a half hours. As a former D1 athlete, running the NYC Marathon had always been on her bucket list. Christine knew training for the marathon would take dedication and sacrifice, especially after breaking her back in 2016, but her inspiration was the Long Island veterans who dedicated their lives to protecting our country. “The Mission United cause holds an important place in my heart and supports veterans who gave so much for our country. Showcasing my effort toward training lets me teach my three young boys what giving back means,” Christine said.

Andrew Tulenko (East Northport, NY) Andrew, a former high school and college runner, completed the race in four hours and 18 minutes. He is a National Grid engineer and a Naval Reservist, originally from Colorado, who joined the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy here on Long Island, where he met his wife and built a family. “I wanted to run in support of Mission United because I believe in the value that its various programs provide to veterans,” Andrew said. “Adjusting back to civilian life and continuing to provide for their families can be difficult, so veterans should have the best support possible. Not only is this important for veterans themselves, but also for society. I wanted to take this opportunity to help contribute and build awareness for this cause.”

Alma Rocha (Freeport, NY) Alma, a Freeport Elementary School Principal, finished her 32nd marathon in six hours and 47 minutes. "The first time I ran the Long Island Half Marathon was the first time I saw veterans running with just one limb,” Alma said. “In Mexico where I grew up, war wasn’t something I thought about often. So, when I ran the half marathon, it was real for me to see someone with a lost arm or leg. The impact that had on me to be able to come back to the world with crutches or wheelchairs takes my heart. I thought, if veterans can run this, what can I do?" Alma ran “not for recognition but to contribute to United Way’s Mission United."

Since 2016, Team Mission United has raised more than $200,000 for veterans through runners’ participation in the TCS New York City Marathon. To participate in this once-ina-lifetime race, each Team Mission United member made a minimum fundraising commitment of $3,000.

“We couldn’t be prouder of all the work our runners have put in throughout these past twelve months,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island.

“Our veterans across Long Island are collectively grateful for Team Mission United’s support to live healthy and productive lives and build brighter futures.”

• Confirm restaurants are open. Many restaurants close on major holidays to enable staff to spend time with their own family members. This may be more so for Thanksgiving and Christmas than with week-long celebrations like Chanukah and Kwanzaa. Christmas Day falls on a Monday in 2023, which typically is a day when many restaurants are closed.

• Make a reservation. If you find an establishment open for the holiday, reserve a table early. Also, some restaurants may ask for a deposit on reservations to ensure you show up.

• Expect some menu changes. To account for reduced staff or even ease in meal service, some restaurants may opt for a price-fixed holiday menu or a limited menu from their typical offerings. Some may showcase a seasonal menu that caters to holiday favorites they think diners will expect.

• Avoid peak dining times. Restaurants may fill up after church services or around dinner time. Consider reserving your table for a less popular hour to reduce the propensity for long waits or being rushed out.

hat would the holidays be without decadent desserts? The season is synonymous with cookies and other baked treats, so much so that families often incorporate holi day baking into their annual traditions.

People who avoid gluten for health reasons may feel left out when the bevy of desserts is distributed during home visits or office holiday parties, as they probably cannot indulge in these sweet trea ts. This recipe for “Mint Slims” from Danielle Walker ’s “Eat What You Love” (Ten Speed Press) ensures that eve have gone gluten-free can enjoy som n those who e holiday sweets.

Coating

10 ounces dairy-free and soy-free semisweet chocolate chips 3⁄4 teaspoon expeller-pressed coconut oil 1⁄4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the beater attachment, or using a food processor, combine the almond flour, coconut flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, salt, and maple sugar and mix thoroughly on medium speed.

In a saucepan, combine the honey, coconut oil, chocolate, and peppermint extract and cook over low heat, stirring until melted. Pour the melted chocolate mixture into the dry ingredients and beat on medium speed until fully combined.

Holiday Baking Goes Gluten-Free Mint Slims Makes 25 2 cups blanched almond flour 2 tablespoons coconut flour 1⁄2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1⁄2 teaspoon baking soda 1⁄4 teaspoon fine sea salt 1⁄4 cup maple sugar 1⁄4 cup light-colored raw honey 1⁄4 cup expeller-pressed coconut oil 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate, chopped 1⁄2 teaspoon pure peppermint extract www.longislandmediagroup.com

Using your hands, pack the dough firmly into two balls, then flatten each into a thick disk. Roll each disk into a 1⁄4-inchthick circle on a piece of parchment paper. Stack the pieces (with parchment paper in between) on a baking sheet and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 2 days. (If chilling for more than 2 hours, cover the top piece of dough with another piece of parchment paper.)

When you’re ready to bake the cookies, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line two or three baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.

Remove one of the dough pieces from the refrigerator. Use a 2-inch-round cookie cutter to cut out circles and place them on a prepared baking sheet. Repeat with the remaining dough, rerolling and cutting circles until all the dough is used.

Bake one sheet at a time for 8 minutes, rotating the sheet halfway through baking. Cool the cookies on the sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.

To make the coating, melt the chocolate chips and oil together in a double boiler or a heatproof bowl set over a saucepan filled with about 1 inch of boiling water. Stir the mixture frequently until the chocolate melts. Stir the peppermint extract into the melted chocolate. Turn off the heat and remove the bowl from the pan.

Dip each cookie completely into the melted chocolate and use a fork to lift it out. Tap the fork gently on the side of the bowl to allow any excess chocolate to drip off. Place the dipped cookies on the prepared baking sheets, then refrigerate the cookies for 1 hour to help the chocolate set. Serve chilled.

6. Improve your diet. Eating more meals at home and incorporating more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein into your meals can improve overall health.

he dawn of a new year marks a great time to turn over a new leaf. Many people begin a new year by making resolutions, and aspiring to eat healthier is annually among the most popular pledges health-conscious individuals make.

• Treat yourself, but only periodically. It’s unreasonable and potentially counterproductive to avoid foods seen as treats completely. Cutting out indulgent foods may seem appropriate, but such an approach could make you miserable, and a diet that sparks feelings of misery will prove harder to commit to than one that allows for the occasional indulgence. Moderation is the name of the game, and that should be a rule of thumb for both healthy foods and indulgences. Don’t make indulgences part of your daily routine, even if you eat them in moderation.

Rather, save treats for special occasions, and even then only eat them in moderation.

A recent Statista survey of hundreds of people across the globe found that eating healthier was the second most popular New Year’s resolution of 2023. 50 percent of respondents indicated they set goals to eat healthier in the year ahead. Though each year is different, it’s fair to assume a similarly large percentage of resolution-minded individuals will aspire to eat healthier over the next 12 months. As people begin their journeys to a healthier lifestyle, they can consider these strategies to stay the course with a new diet.

Celebrating The New Year

elebrating the new year on January 1 is a relatively recent phenomenon. The calendar as we know it today has evolved several times and months have gone by different names. On the early Roman calendar, March was the first month of the 10-month calendar. That is why the last four months of the year have prefixes that coordinate with the seventh (September), eighth (October), ninth (November), and tenth (December) numerals. King Numa Pompilius reformed the calendar around 700 BCE by adding the months of January and February to the original 10 months. But the calendar still required some additional tweaking to be more aligned with the seasons. In 46 B.C., Julius Caesar introduced a solar-based calendar that was an improvement on the ancient Roman one, which was lunarbased. During this time, the month of Quintilis was renamed July in honor of Julius Caesar and Sextilis was renamed August in honor of Augustus. Shortly after the introduction of the solar calendar, the beginning of the year was moved from March 1 to January 1.
