ewelry is a popular gift come Valentine’s Day. The National Retail Federation says 20 percent of Valentine’s Day consumers are expected to buy jewelry this year, spending a total of $4.3 billion. Many people find buying jewelry for a loved one a little daunting because jewelry is such a personal item. Much like their favorite fragrances, men and women may have signature jewelry pieces and prefer some styles more than others. Buying jewelry can be complicated for the uninformed. Because jewelry can be expensive, it pays for consumers to do their homework. With a little research and some knowledge from professional jewelers, shoppers can find pieces that turn out to be real Valentine’s Day winners. Discover his or her style. Consumers may need to have a little Sherlock Holmes in them when buying jewelry for a loved one. Pay attention to the pieces a loved one wears each day or on special occasions. Listen and take notes when others ask your loved one about jewelry. For those who like a direct approach, ask a significant other to point out appealing items in a magazine. This can help consumers determine if a loved one likes classic styles, modern pieces, certain metal types or particular gemstones. Prestige brands aren’t necessarily better. Synthetic stones - which are grown in a laboratory - can be much more affordable because of their greater availability. Shoppers should ask for certificates that guarantee authenticity and indicate where the stones originated. Keep proportion in mind. Bulky jewelry may look awkward on people with slight frames, while smaller pieces may get lost on taller or fuller-figured persons. Serve Breakfast in Bed this Valentine’s Day

erving breakfast in bed on Valentine’s Day is a romantic way to begin this day that has become synonymous with affection and romance. Of course, pouring a bowl of cereal and bringing it upstairs won’t have the same impact as whipping up a

homemade breakfast. Those who want to impress their sweethearts this Valentine’s Day and start the day off right can prepare the following recipe for Strawberry-Glazed French Toast with Sweetened Sour Cream: Serves 4

Ingredients 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf (see note) 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1⁄2 teaspoon 1⁄2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1⁄2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1⁄3 cup strawberry jam or preserves

Directions Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a

large plate or platter.

Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1⁄2 teaspoon vanilla. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient.

Helping Kids find Hobbies this Winter

uch like adults can benefit from participating in hobbies, children can reap rewards from engaging in hobbies. According to the Child Development Institute, hobbies give children a chance to express themselves. The CDI also notes that hobbies can play an important role in children’s self-discovery and boost their selfesteem. Some children may discover hobbies on their own, requiring little if any assistance on the part of their parents. For example, some kids may display an interest in music that parents, even those with not such musical inclination, can foster by purchasing certain instruments. But some children may need a little more prompting, and parents of such boys and girls can take certain steps to help their youngsters find rewarding hobbies: Involve kids in your own hobbies. Kids look up to their parents and often want to emulate what their mothers and fathers do. If possible, involve children in your own hobbies. Gardeners can teach their youngsters how to grow and

tend to a garden, while painters can host family painting nights where everyone is encouraged to create their own masterpiece. Parents whose hobbies are more adultoriented, like woodworking, can still involve their children. For example, work with children to design a new item, then show them how the item goes from paper to finished product; just avoid allowing them to use any unsafe tools or machines.

Weighing In on Exercise vs. Dieting

tatistics indicate more and more men, women and children are overweight or obese. The National Institutes of Health state that more than 35 percent of adults in the United States are obese and more than 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children and adolescents in the United States are obese. Obesity rates are three times as high among today’s children than they were among youngsters just one generation ago. As individuals attempt to lose weight, they may wonder what is the most effective way to accomplish that objective. Some argue that the secret to weight loss is lots of exercise, while others insist that calorie control is the key. When it comes to slimming down, some may be surprised by what the experts have to say. The Mayo Clinic advises that cutting calories through dietary changes appears to promote weight loss more effectively than physical exercise alone. According to Shawn M. Talbott, Ph.D., a nutritional biochemist and former

director of the University of Utah Nutrition Clinic, weight loss is about 75 percent diet and 25 percent exercise. People generally see the largest short-term results when they eat healthy foods and healthy portions. Poor diets can be difficult to overcome, as it takes a lot of exercise to spur dramatic weight loss, whereas a low-calorie, healthy diet can be a simple and effective means to losing weight. Nutritionists often point to a balanced diet that focuses on fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and whole-grain carbohydrates over fad diets or ones that require the adherence to strict guidelines that are difficult to follow for lengthy periods of time.

Flu-Fighting Tips to Keep You Healthy

Throughout much of North America, flu season peaks between December and February. But flu season can occur anywhere from October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu. Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with: Foods. Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries

can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages. Flu Shot and Medications. Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off. Stop Germ Proliferation. Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people. Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill. Rest and Restore. Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

Safeguard Roofs Against Snow Damage

now may delight young children itching for a day off from school. But for many homeowners, the sight of snow means their time will soon be spent clearing paths and plowing driveways rather than building snowmen and sledding with friends. The sight of falling snow also may inspire some homeowners to think about the roofs of their homes. The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety warns that it is important to understand the risk of roof collapse due to the weight of snow on the roof. Roof structures that are in good condition can support roughly 20 pounds per square foot. IIBHS says this equates to around four feet of new snow before a roof will become stressed. Total snowfall is not the only factor to consider. Homeowners also must check the type of snow that has fallen. According to House Logic, six inches of wet snow is equal to the weight of about 38 inches of dry snow. That means it may take much less sodden snow to weigh down a roof. Roof condition and the shape of the

roof bear consideration as well. Popular Mechanics says the ideal pitched roof is smooth and steep so that the snow slides off. Closely spaced rafters improve the strength of the roof. A flat or slightly pitched roof may accumulate snow more readily. Homeowners are urged to inspect roof rafters to see if they are cracked from previous snowstorms or damaged from insects or rot. Snapping or popping sounds while snow is on the roof is not a good sign.

However, for those with well-equipped emergency preparedness kits in their vehicles’ trunks, breakdowns can be much easier to manage. Even though new vehicles are loaded with advanced technology, drivers are no less likely to avoid breakdowns. In fact, roadside calls for stranded vehicles are on the rise. A study by the American Automobile Association found that, in 2015, 32 million drivers required the organization’s services, with issues regarding vehicle batteries, flat tires and vehicle keys reaching all-time highs. Despite early warning systems, more than half a million drivers in the United States ran out of gas last year, necessitating service calls. An emergency vehicle kit is something that no driver should leave home without. Just because a car appears to be in good shape or is well-maintained doesn’t mean something can’t happen. Here’s what to stock in an emergency preparedness kit for a vehicle: Sustenance: It’s impossible to determine how long you may be stranded if your vehicle breaks down. Therefore, keep some highcalorie energy or protein bars, or other portable foods with a long shelf lives, in your vehicle at all times. Water: Popular Mechanics says a person needs roughly a gallon per

day to stay hydrated. If that’s too much to pack, bring empty water bottles and purification tablets. Otherwise, stock up on bottled water. Weather Supplies: You never know which way the weather will turn. A blanket, poncho, tarp, trash bags and much more can be used to keep covered, warm and dry. Mobile Phone: Mobile phones can be used to call for roadside assistance or other help. But keep in mind that cell signals may be especially weak in remote areas. Men and women who want to make this Valentine’s Day extra special can forgo store-bought chocolates in favor of homemade confections. The following recipe for “Swiss Mountain Ice Cream” is a great way to end a romantic holiday dinner:

Stir the cream into the mixture, then churn-freeze in an ice cream maker in two batches. This will take 20 to 30 minutes. It will increase in volume as it thickens and freezes. Stop churning when thick and smooth, add the nougat and churn to mix, then transfer to a chilled freezer-proof tray, cover and freeze. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, put the mixture in a freezer-proof tray or container and freeze until it is frozen around the edges. Mash well with a fork and return to the freezer. Continue mashing with a fork and freezing the mixture until thick and smooth, about 2 hours. Stir in the nougat. At this stage, you can pack it into a mold and return to the freezer. If the ice cream is in a mold, remove from the freezer and dip briefly in hot water to melt the outside. Invert onto a chilled plate, lifting off the mold. If the ice cream is in a container, transfer to the refrigerator to soften for 20 minutes before serving in scoops. Drizzle with White Chocolate Sauce and serve.

White Chocolate Sauce

Makes about 21⁄2 cups

• 1 cup light or heavy cream • 6 tablespoons milk • 8 ounces white chocolate (over 25% cocoa butter), chopped

Put the cream and milk in a small pan and bring to just below boiling point. Remove from the heat and let cool for 2 to 3 minutes. Add the white chocolate and stir until completely melted. Serve warm.

ining out can be a special treat after a busy week, a way to celebrate special occasions or a means to socialize with friends. Dining out every so often can be part of a healthy lifestyle, but individuals who want to exercise the utmost control over their diets may find eating at home makes it easier to do so.

Many Americans dine out at least once per week. But entrée options on restaurant menus may be high in calories and compromise dieters’ efforts to slim down. An average dinner entrée is 1,500 calories. Depending on age and gender, health experts say that adults need somewhere between 2,000 and 2,500 calories per day.

If dining out is compromising diners’ attempts to lose weight or maintain healthy weights, then exploring the following benefits to dining at home might be enough to compel them to enjoy more meals prepared in their own kitchens: Cooking their own foods affords diners control over ingredients, including those that might not promote weight loss. Making meals enables you to regulate the amount of food served, better controlling portion sizes.
