• Shop end-of-season sales. Garden centers may begin to make room for holiday items come the fall. Take advantage of reduced costs on remaining plants and landscape accessories during this time of year. Plants can be covered or allowed to thrive indoors until they can be planted in the spring.
The tree and bare root retailer Bower & Branch advises that soil temperatures in many regions of the country may still be warm enough to encourage root growth well into the start of winter. Furthermore, fall is often the ideal time to plant, fertilize and keep a garden going or to get a head start on next year’s bounty. Here are some tips to make the most of the fall gardening season.
• Think about fall annuals and bulb planting. Near the end of September, start planting cool-weather-loving pansies and violas for pops of color as summer flowers fade. Also, it’s a good idea to stock up on bulbs that will bloom in the coming months before they sell out in stores. Wait until the temperatures really cool down before planting them in desired spots for spring sprouts.
EDITION ELEVEN
• Continue to water plants. Water is essential in the fall and winter as roots can still be growing. Gradually reduce watering duration as plants go dormant. Fall planting and maintenance can extend the gardening season and improve the chances of growing a healthy spring garden.
• Use stones or gravel for a walkway. If commercially installed pavers or cement walkways are not within your budget, there are some affordable alternatives. Flagstone or individually purchased and spaced pavers and pea gravel can be used to create pathways. Some construction sites even offer free stones when asked. Soften the look with moss or other plants on the perimeter.
Revitalize Your Landscape On A Budget 10 SEASONS® MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
• Propagate plants in the fall. As temperatures gradually begin to cool, start taking cuttings from perennials, gathering seed pods from azaleas and rhododendrons, and dividing hardwood cuttings, says the resource Gardening Know How. Consult with a garden center or horticulturist on the proper ways to propagate stems using rooting hormone and other techniques.
Spring and summer are perhaps the busiest times of year for gardeners. However, fall also is a prime time to tend to gardens.
Many homeowners think they have to spend tons of green to get green in their landscape, but that isn’t necessarily so. Homeowners can improve their landscapes without digging themselves into financial holes. These strategies can help anyone save some cash and still end up with attractive gardens and more.
A Beginner’s Guide To Fall Planting & Maintenance
• Fill in landscaping gaps. Some fall plants can add color around the landscape and brighten up homes to add curb appeal. In addition to pansies and violas, asters, kale, and chrysanthemums are fall blooms. Keep in mind that mums can come back year after year. So take them out of those flower pots and get them into the ground. They can be enjoyed next year as well, sprouting in early spring and developing leaves and buds through late summer.•Clean up unwanted growth. Fall is an ideal time to cut back on spent vegetable plants and get rid of errant weeds. Rather than bagging leaves, mow them with a grass catcher and add the mix to a vegetable garden as an excellent soil insulator. The nitrogen and carbon will fertilize the soil, enhancing growing possibilities and limiting weed growth.

For More Information, Call 631.226.2636www.longislandmediagroup.com/seasons-magazine
• Remove some lawn. Lawns can require hours of upkeep that may involve the application of expensive fertilizers and weedkilling products that are not always so ecofriendly. Reduce the size of a lawn by putting in a mixed planting bed of perennials or ornamental grasses, or use landscape fabric and mulch.
Old wheelbarrows, barrels, watering cans and other items can be repurposed into container gardening vessels. Figure out if items marked for the garbage bin can be incorporated into garden features instead.
• Sow salad seeds. Lettuce, spinach, radishes, and arugula tolerate cooler temperatures. Try new and exciting lettuce varieties and enjoy salads well into the fall season.•Take inventory of the sun. Positioning a garden carefully means maximizing hours of sunlight, which begin to dwindle in the fall. Experts say gardens grow best in sunny locations that receive six hours of direct sunlight each day. This is where container gardens can be helpful, as they allow gardeners to move plants into spots that will get ample sunlight.
• Invest in plants that are easy to propagate. Perennials are the gardener’s friend when it comes to saving money. These plants sprout anew each year, and many, such as sedum, catmint, ferns, hostas, and black-eyed Susans, can propagate by division. Figure out the best times of year to divide the plants and start growing them in individual containers before planting the sturdy new shoots in the ground. A single variety of plants grouped together in mass plantings is affordable and easy.
• Pool your resources. Homeowners planning on a big landscaping or revitalization project may want to speak with neighbors to see if they’re interested in doing the same. Contractors guaranteed business from a few homes in the same neighborhood may be willing to negotiate lower prices for the volume of work on things like driveway repaving, deck or fence-building, or installation of paver patios. Some handy ideas can help homeowners transform landscapes without spending too much.
• Look for free mulch. Municipal recycling centers may offer residents access to free mulch made from grinding up leaves, branches, and other plant debris collected throughout the town. Simply bring a few containers to the recycling center and spread the mulch for an ornamental look or to insulate landscapes over winter and protect against weeds.•Repurpose old items into planters.

2. Work with a nonprofit organization. Many nonprofit organizations are involved with local politics. Some may support a candidate who’s supported their missions, while others' missions may be rooted in politics. For example, a local nonprofit may be centered around getting more young people to vote. Individuals who don’t want to get involved in the partisan side of local politics can still lend a hand by working with nonprofit organizations that are not affiliated with a party or candidate.
The organizers behind National Voter Registration Day note that it is a partner-driven effort. Partners include individuals but also nonprofit organizations, campus and youth groups, high schools, libraries, election offices, local and national businesses, co-ops, digital platforms, media outlets, and more. Community events, including in person and virtual events, and social media campaigns are just some of the ways individuals can promote and participate in National Voter Registration Day.
Organizers urge participants to avoid using National Voter Registration Day to advocate on behalf of a particular candidate, party or ballot measure. The holiday is intended to provide nonpartisan education to voters about voter registration, including where and how to register as well as vote. The organizers want the day to remain positive and urge participants to avoid asking people who they plan to vote for or who they voted for in the past. In addition, participants should not wear shirts, buttons or stickers that support a particular candidate or party or convey a political message. Organizers also urge people to avoid getting pulled into political debates with people they are registering or bystanders.National Voter Registration Day takes place on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. More information can be found nationalvoterregistrationday.org.at RegistrationVoterDay14
National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday to get Americans registered to vote and educate them about how to vote on or around Election Day. One and a half million people registered to vote on National Voter Registration Day in 2020.
Is National Voter Registration Day A Partisan Event?
The highly anticipated 2022 Midterm Elections will be held this Fall on Tuesday, November 8th. Politicians may be the faces of local politics, but volunteers are often the engines that make political operations run smoothly. The following are three simple ways people with a passion for politics can get involved in their local governments.
What Is National Voter Registration Day?
How Can Everyone Participate In National Voter Registration Day?
1. Volunteer with a campaign. Local politicians may be your neighbor, your children’s youth sports coach, or a friend you’ve known since childhood. All political campaigns rely on the efforts of volunteers to get their messages out, and that’s especially so in local elections.

The organizers behind the holiday note that as many as 25 percent of all eligible voters in the United States are not registered to vote. Voters who miss the deadlines to register, which vary from state to state, are ineligible to vote, though some states allow voters to register in person on Election Day and still vote. Voter registration is not closed in any state on or before National Voter Registration Day, so participants can rest easy knowing that if they successfully register on this day they will be eligible to vote on Election Day, which is Tuesday, November 8, 2022. A list of state-by-state voter registration deadlines can be found at Vote. org.
Local candidates likely don’t have the financial war chest that’s available to statewide or national politicians. As a result, local politicians often must stretch every dollar, and that becomes easier with each additional volunteer who joins their staff. If there’s a candidate you feel strongly about, don’t hesitate to volunteer with his or her campaign.
3 Ways To Get Involved In Local Politics
For More Information, Call 631.226.2636www.longislandmediagroup.com/seasons-magazine
Democracy is most effective when all eligible voters cast their votes. The importance of voting cannot be understated. In recognition of the importance of voting, each year the United States celebrates National Voter Registration Day on the fourth Tuesday in September. This year, National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, September 20, 2022.
SEASONS® MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
How To Participate In National
3. Work with local election boards. Local election boards rely on volunteers come Election Day. Such volunteers work in polling stations, which typically open in the early morning and may remain so until 7 p.m. or 8 p.m. The more volunteers who can pitch in on Election Day, the more smoothly voting can go. That may translate to shorter lines and a more enjoyable voting experience for local residents. Local governments also may need volunteers throughout the year to work during city council meetings. Individuals need not run for office to get involved in local politics, which provides a great way for residents to give back to their communities.

Short Ribs Serves 4 4 pounds bone-in beef short ribs, well trimmed 1 teaspoon salt, plus additional for seasoning
16 SEASONS® MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
1⁄2 teaspoon ground black pepper, plus additional for seasoning
1 large onion, halved and cut into 1⁄4-inch slices
1 tablespoon tomato paste
Slow cookers are a handy tool for any home chef, particularly those who juggle busy daily schedules. With slow cookers, meals can be prepared in advance and then left to simmer for hours while they develop deep flavors as meats become tender and succulent. When cooking recipes in a slow cooker, it’s best to choose cuts of meats and poultry that can stand up to long cook times. These cuts tend to be more fibrous and tough, but will tenderize with time. Short ribs, for example, are a prime option for slow cooking magic. They’re the star of this recipe for “Bacon, Onion & Stout Braised Short Ribs” from “Crock-Pot® 365 Year-Round Recipes” (Publications International, Ltd.) from The Crock-Pot Kitchens.
1 tablespoon vegetable oil 6 ounces thick-cut bacon cut into 1⁄4-inch dice
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard 1 bottle (12 ounces) Irish stout 1 bay leaf 1 cup beef broth 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley leaves Hot mashed potatoes or cooked egg noodles (optional)
Cozy Up To A Slow-Cooked Meal

Directions: Season beef with salt and pepper. Heat oil in large skillet over medium-high heat until almost smoking. Working in batches, cook short ribs in skillet, turning to brown on all sides. Transfer each batch to a slow cooker as it is finished. Wipe out pan with paper towels and return to Cookheat. bacon, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 4 minutes. Transfer with a slotted spoon to a paper towel-lined plate to drain. Remove and discard all but 1 tablespoon drippings from pan. Reduce heat to medium and add onion. Cook until softened and translucent, stirring occasionally. Add tomato paste, flour, mustard, 1 teaspoon salt and 1⁄2 teaspoon pepper. Cook, stirring constantly, 1 minute. Remove from bottom of pan. Pour over short ribs. Add drained bacon, bay leaf and beef broth. Cover and cook on low 8 hours, or until meat is tender and falls off the bone. Remove beef and skim fat from cooking liquid. Remove bay leaf and stir in parsley. Serve with mashed potatoes or egg noodles.
Tip: This recipe can be cooked ahead and refrigerated overnight.

WILDWOOD FALL FESTIVAL

Makes 5 1⁄2 cups 6 tablespoons olive oil 6 whole garlic cloves, peeled 1 cup finely chopped onion
1⁄4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 28-ounce can peeled Italian tomatoes with basil, drained and chopped, juice reserved (see tip below)
Directions: In a 3-quart saucepan, heat the oil, garlic, onion, and red pepper flakes over medium-high heat. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring well. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 10 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes, basil, oregano, and salt. Stir well and cook 5 minutes over medium heat. Add the reserved tomato juice, and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
12 fresh basil leaves, or 11⁄4 teaspoons dried
When the sauce has finished cooking, let it cool to room temperature, and then process to a smooth consistency in a food processor. You may notice that the color changes slightly in the processor; do not worry — this is normal, and it will not affect the flavor. The sauce can be frozen for up to a month.
Chef’s tips: The best canned tomatoes to use in this sauce are those packed in Italy; the American product tends to be too tart. If you use American tomatoes, add 1⁄2 teaspoon sugar when you are cooking them. This is a basic sauce used mainly to prepare other sauces. If you want to use it over pasta, you might add a bit more salt, according to your taste.
1⁄4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt (see tip below)
Homemade Tomato Sauce Adds Zest To Meals

20 SEASONS® MAGAZINE Autumn 2022
Tomato sauce is a staple in Italian cooking and other cuisines. Many families have special recipes for their own tomato sauces. Such sauces are served during leisurely Sunday afternoon meals featuring pasta and meats. Tomatobased sauces have many names among Italians. “Sugo” is a word that broadly defines “sauce,” and can be applied to tomato-based varieties. “Ragú” implies that the sauce was reduced to obtain a more concentrated flavor profile after cooking it for hours. Marinara originated in Naples and means “sailor-style.” It is a classic sugo made from a few simple ingredients. An alternative to simmered sugo is salsa, which is made quickly with pureed tomatoes and does not contain meat or vegetables. It’s ideal as a summer dressing for pasta and needn’t be cooked for long. It’s relatively easy to make homemade tomato sauce, and by doing so one can save quite a bit of money over the jarred varieties sold at supermarkets. The freshness of homemade sauce cannot be replicated — especially if the sugo is made with tomatoes plucked from a backyard garden. For those new to homemade sauce, this recipe for “Sugo di Pomodoro” from “Nick Stellino’s Family Kitchen” (G.P Putnam’s Sons) is a fine place to start.

Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

• Consider other factors: Children with flat feet need shoes with a wide toe box, maximum arch support and shock absorption. The best shoes for flat feet are stiff-soled, lace-up shoes that have enough depth for an orthotic insert, if necessary.
“A common persisting myth is that children will ‘grow out of’ foot problems. But foot problems developed in childhood can become more serious if left unaddressed,” says Dr. Coyer. “One of the most important steps you can take to prevent pediatric foot issues is by taking time during the back-to-school season to buy footwear that fits well and offers good support. Further, having your child evaluated by a foot and ankle surgeon member of ACFAS at the first sign of trouble can help reduce the likelihood of worsening problems and help keep your childForactive.”more back-to-school tips, information on foot and ankle health, and to find a foot and ankle surgeon near you, visit FootHealthFacts.org, the patient education website for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. • Find the right fit: “Your child’s feet can grow up to two sizes in six months, so you need to account for rapid growth when buying shoes,” says Dr. Michael Coyer, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle surgeon and Fellow Member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Dr. Coyer cautions against the temptation to buy oversized shoes though, as they can cause the foot to slide forward, putting excessive pressure on the toes. “A good fit is about a finger’s width from the end of the shoe to the tip of the big toe,” he says. On the other hand, don’t wait too long to replace tight shoes. Tight shoes can cause blisters, corns and calluses on toes, blisters on the back of the heels and ingrown nails, which can become infected. If you notice signs of infection such as pain, redness or fluid draining from the area, schedule an appointment with a foot and ankle surgeon, who can perform a simple, safe in-office procedure to remove the affected area of the nail.

Kids’ feet grow and change quickly, which means you’ll likely be shoe shopping this back-to-school season. As you head to the store, consider these tips and insights from the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS).

• Replace worn-out shoes: Because shoes lose shock absorption over time, wearing worn-out shoes can elevate the risk for heel pain, Achilles tendonitis and even ankle sprains and stress fractures.“Inspect old shoes and replace any that lack sufficient cushioning and arch support, or have excessive wear to the bottom or around the edges of the sole,” says Dr. Coyer. “When shopping, don’t assume a new pair will offer proper support. Check to see that the toe box is wide enough and the shoe doesn’t bend in the middle of the sole.”
School Year Tips From A Foot And Ankle Surgeon Music Courses
• Protect young athletes: “Every new season, we see an increase in ankle injuries among young athletes,” says Dr. Coyer. Help prevent sports-related injuries by equipping your child with proper footwear this fall. Start each sports season with new shoes and always buy the right shoe for the sport. You can also protect young athletes by never allowing them to play through foot pain. Foot pain isn’t normal and if it lasts for more than a few days and interferes with normal activities, seek medical attention.

5. Dinnertime: Knowing how to put together a meal is an invaluable life skill, and one that many kids leave home without having achieved. Have your child regularly help you out with dinner, giving them age-appropriate tasks to complete. It’s not only a great way to spend some quality time together during the busy week, but they will also begin to pick up the fundamentals of cooking. With a little creativity, your child’s afternoons can be a time for them to get active, build new skills and try new hobbies. (StatePoint)
5 Fun Ways To Keep Kids Busy After School
Numerous studies have found a correlation between early introduction to music education and a number of benefits for children. Music education can help develop communication skills, brain plasticity, language, and motor skills. A study conducted by the University of California, Los Angeles used a database of more than 25,000 middle and high school students. The researchers found that students involved in arts performed better on standardized achievement tests than students with lower arts involvement. Furthermore, data from 2015 from The College Board, which produces the SAT, found students who took four years of arts and music classes while in high school scored an average of 92 points higher on their SATs than students who only took one-half year or less.
Community Involvement Participation and even appreciation of the arts can have an impact as well. Researchers from the Department of Public Administration at the University of Illinois Chicago found that being an art curator or audience member leads to high levels of civic engagement and social tolerance.Thesupport and therapy company Evolve Treatment Centers reports that involvement in music and arts leads to overall higher GPAs, higher scores in math and reading, and a reduced risk of behavioral problems and suspensions.
4. Math fun: Outside the classroom, mathematics can be all fun and zero pressure. Be sure to offer kids tools that will allow them to uncover, on their own terms, the way mathematical concepts work. The basic, scientific and graphing calculators available from Casio are all intuitive and easy to use. Some of the advanced models even offer Python programming, a great feature for budding coders.
3. Giving back: Children are never too young to learn the importance of giving back to their community. From offering a helping hand at an animal sanctuary, to visiting seniors residing in an assisted living facility, there are many volunteer opportunities perfect for kids.
While television and video games are classic after school staples, there are better, more fun ways to keep kids busy in the afternoons. Here are five fun ideas to try:

How The Arts Benefit Academic Performance
1. Bike rides: Cycling is beneficial to strength, cardiovascular health and mental wellness. It’s also a great opportunity for kids to gain a bit of independence and explore the world around them, and there is no better season than spring to encourage them to get off the couch and out for a ride.

The 2022-2023 school year is upon us, and parents may be wondering how their children can better their academic performance. The arts may not be the first way to pop into your mind, however they can have a positive effect on students’ academic performance!

ImprovedStatesEmotional In addition to better performance on tests, a review in Frontiers in Psychology examined several studies linking arts and aesthetic experiences with “broad improvements” in an individual's emotional states. Those improvements included greater psychological and physical well-being.
Better Test Performance

2. Music making: Kids don’t need to be enrolled in a formal music program at school to experience the joys of making music. With a portable keyboard like those in the Casiotone series, which offer learning and composition tools that grow with a musician’s skills, kids can use their afternoons to self-direct their musical education. Every model is under 10 pounds and features a battery-powered option, making them the perfect size and design for teens and tweens who want to start a band.
The cost of products and services continues to rise and organizations everywhere have increasingly been feeling the pressure to reevaluate budgets. It’s no different in school districts nationwide, with school boards making difficult decisions about which programs to keep and which will have to go in order to saveMusicmoney.and arts programs often are the first to be cut when school budgets are tightened. The organization Save the Music says that, during the Great Recession in 2008 and 2009, per-pupil spending in public schools decreased by approximately 7 percent across the country. This led to a trickle-down effect that resulted in the cancellation of art and music programs. Since then, many districts have continued to cut arts programs due to budget limitations. COVID-19 also did little to help the situation. Art program cutbacks are rarely met with open arms, and that resistance has a lot to do with the positive effects such offerings have on a students’ academic performance.
