Plan a day to shop local fairs, shops and stands

A

utumn is tailor-made for getting out of the house to enjoy the great outdoors. With crisp temperatures perfect for strolls or sightseeing and breathtaking scenery awash in bright autumnal hues, autumn landscapes make for the ideal backdrop for weekend plans, including shopping excursions.

on pumpkin season — both for cooking and carving.

Stock the car with reusable tote bags and scour the farmer’s markets for seasonal finds. Chances are you also might pick up some extra treats, such as fresh honey or canned jams.

Fall is a great season to enjoy festivals, farmer’s markets and craft fairs, as merchants look to liquidate inventory before they prepare for the rush of the upcoming holiday season. Cities, towns, hamlets, and everything in between will host their share of open markets and more with great deals to be had, and fall is an ideal time to visit local shops and stands.

many seasonal items are on display. You also can sample these foods in interesting applications and make a day of gathering recipes and supplies to enjoy later.

Fresh produce Farms big and small are bursting with produce come the fall. You can find the last vestiges of summer crops mingling with the first fruits of autumn. Grab the last of tomatoes and start thinking ahead to apples, squashes, lettuces, and grapes. You can even get an early start

Food finds As plants are harvested, many items are turned into delicious treats. No autumn shopping excursion is complete until you smell a fresh-baked apple pie or some apple cider doughnuts. Corn breads and fritters, cranberry snacks and wines from nearby wineries also are easy to find in autumn. These items make welcome additions to your own pantry, or bring a freshly made treat to a friend or family member’s home when paying a visit.

Crafts, jewelry and décor Include a trip to a craft fair, where local vendors come together to display and sell their wares, on your weekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, which can be tucked away for giving later in the year.

Also, don’t miss the food-related festivals that pop up on community calendars in the fall. From garlic to potatoes to pumpkins to cheeses,

Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling town squares or closedoff city centers, and you may find some hand-fashioned jewelry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more. Shopping local shops, farms and fairs is a great way to enjoy the fresh autumn air while supporting local businesses.

State Park Spotlight: Belmont Lake State Park

B

elmont Lake State Park, located in West Babylon, is a 463acre day use park bisected by Carll's Creek and Belmont Lake. The park, established in 1926, had been owned by August Belmont and served as farmland for some of Belmont's equestrian activities. Robert Moses chose this park to establish the regional headquarters for all state parks on Long Island in 1935, which serves the public today for region-wide permit sales, park administration and as headquarters for the New York State Park Police.

The park is primarily visited by families seeking outdoor gatherings, picnics and informal sports activities. It provides a bucolic feeling adjacent to the Southern State Parkway at exit 38 among densely developed neighborhoods. Carll's Creek stretches 4.2 miles south to the Great South Bay with a trail for hiking and biking. Horseback riding is available through the nearby Babylon Riding Center (for information call 631-587-7778). The 42-acre Belmont Lake is encircled by a similar path, making a total of 7.6 miles of multi-use trails.

Other waterfowl that can be easily spotted include Northern Shovelers, Mergansers, Teal, Great Blue Heron, and Egrets.

Patrons enjoy activities such as picnicking, playgrounds and using the various courts and fields. The lake attracts trail walking, fishing and non-motorized boating. The 7.6 miles of trails throughout the park are available for hiking, walking, biking, nature observation and weather permitting, cross-country skiing.

Pedal boats and rowboats are available for rent on the lake through the summer. They also allow kayaks and canoes to be launched from the boat dock while the boat dock is open (they can't be inflatable, must be hard bottomed, no motors, no surfboards or wakeboards, and no paddle boards). If you cannot bring your own kayak, kayak rentals are also available for a nominal fee.

BK Gymnastics Center

Photo Credit: Long Island State Parks

The park's significant natural features include the 26-acre, spring-fed Belmont Lake and a significant wetland complex. The lake provides springtime trout fishing and summer bass fishing for the avid anglers who use the park. It is home to permanent and migratory waterfowl populations. Park visitors enjoy watching Osprey diving from high above to catch fish for their young in the spring.

The seventh annual Great JackO’-Lantern Sail will take place at Belmont Lake State Park on October 26, 2019. This year’s event will run from 3:00pm-6:00pm and the Pumpkin Sail will begin at 6:15pm. The first 50 carved pumpkins received are placed on flotation devices with candles inserted inside and are sailed around the lake behind kayaks. Children’s activities include crafts, games, inflatables, funny photos and trick-or-treat stations. They can also visit the not-so-scary ‘Spooky Den’. Plan your day trip today to visit Belmont Lake State Park, it truly has a lot to offer!

The origins of Oktoberfest

A

lthough Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, Oktoberfest celebrations now take place all over the globe. They are a chance to enjoy the early autumn weather with music, food, entertainment and, of course, German beer. Oktoberfest is a 16-day folk festival that begins at the end of September and runs through the first week of October. Roughly six million people travel to Germany each year to participate in the official Oktoberfest, while many others attend festivities closer to home. While many people are familiar with the foods, beverages and pageantry of Oktoberfest, they may not be so sure of Oktoberfest’s origins. According to History.com, the first Oktoberfest took place on

Honesty Is Our #1 Policy

October 12, 1810, when Bavarian Crown Prince Louis, later to be known as King Louis I of Bavaria, married Princess Therese von

Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The citizens of Munich were invited, and the festivities were held on the fields in front of the city gates. Horse races took place and eventually concluded the festivities, both at the city gates and elsewhere across Bavaria. The festival and horse races were

The style of beer most widely consumed during Oktoberfest celebrations can be traced to a time before refrigeration was available. According to the online beer resource BeerAdvocate.com, brewing beer in the summertime was nearly impossible in the days before refrigeration. Hot weather and the risk of bacterial infections complicated brewing in summer, so many brewers would cease brewing beer in spring and begin again in the fall when temperatures dropped. As a result, the beers available for Oktoberfest celebrations were the Märzen style of beer, or those brewed in the month of March, shortly before brewing ceased for the season. These Märzen beers were kept in cold storage throughout the spring and summer or brewed at a higher gravity so they would keep and be available for consumption during Oktoberfest celebrations.

The tradition-rich horse race no longer takes place and hasn’t for more than 50 years. But the festive atmosphere still prevails. Huge tents are erected to accommodate the large crowds. Since 1950, the traditional festival opening has been a twelve-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg of Oktoberfest beer at 12:00 by the Mayor of Munich with the cry “O’zapft is!” (“It’s tapped!”). Millions of people participate in Oktoberfest celebrations. An abundance of food and millions of liters of beer are available to enhance the fun.

held once again the following year, giving rise to the tradition of Oktoberfest. To increase the potential for fun and take advantage of longer days, the event was expanded from one day to a few weeks, stretching through September and into October.

Various ways you can put pumpkins to use

F

ew items signal the fall harvest season more than the bright, orange pumpkins that dot fields and liven up displays outside of homes and businesses. Come fall, many pumpkins are turned into grinning jack-o-lanterns just in time for Halloween. But there are many other uses for pumpkins as well.

Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Early Native Americans relied on pumpkins as a source of food that helped them survive long winters. Pumpkins could be roasted, baked, boiled, and dried, and they were eaten and used as medicine. Pumpkin blossoms were added to stews. The shells of the pumpkins could be dried and used as eating and storage vessels. While pumpkins may now be symbolic of Halloween, the following are a handful of additional ways this versatile fruit can be put to use.

Beauty regimen Pumpkins contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals that can help replenish the skin. Pumpkin purée can be mixed with honey,

aloe vera gel, olive oil, and a bit of cornmeal to create an exfoliating mask for the face or body. Pumpkin also can be used to rejuvenate dry or tired skin from cold weather.

Pumpkin wines and beers are popular as well. There are many recipes for developing sweet, fermented beverages, which tend to be especially popular in the fall.

Foods and beverages Pumpkin purée is the basis for many tasty, pumpkin-infused treats. Purée can be used in pies, cakes, muffins, breads, and many additional foods. Pumpkin purée also may be found in certain beverages, such as smoothies and shakes. A bit of spiced purée may appear as flavoring in teas and coffees.

Decorations Pumpkins can also add to one’s home décor during the fall. Pumpkins can be carved for Halloween displays, hollowed-out to hold tealights or simply left on tables and used as centerpieces. Larger pumpkins may be used as natural flower pots for mums or other seasonal floral displays. As the Native Americans once did, pumpkins can be hollowed-out and used as bowls to serve favorite soups and dips.

Honey, pumpkin and yogurt can be mixed together and used to condition hair. Let the mixture sit for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it out and shampoo.

Roasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy treat. Foodies suggest using the seeds from “sugar pumpkins” or the ones best for making pies. Boil the seeds for a few minutes before draining. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray and put the seeds in a single layer. Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Allow to cool and serve.

The “guts” of the pumpkin can be simmered along with aromatics and other vegetables to create a vegetable stock perfect for soups and broths.

Use a hollowed, small pumpkin as a natural aromatic candle holder. Cut holes in the sides to vent the exhaust. Rub aromatic spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, allspice,

cinnamon, and vanilla bean, on the inside of the pumpkin. Insert a beeswax candle in the bottom of the pumpkin and let it send inviting aromas into the air.

Pumpkins are a versatile fruit that can serve many purposes beyond just jack-o-lanterns and pies.

Easy ways to clean up leaves

A

utumn is marked by colorful foliage and plummeting temperatures. Once those leaves reach peak color, they fall from the branches and collect on lawns, necessitating cleanup projects. For homeowners with big yards, such a project can be tiring and time-consuming. However, there are ways to make leaf cleanup easier.

sweeping brush that gathers up lawn debris and leaves into an attached hopper bag. Like mowed leaves, the bag can be emptied into a compost pile or distributed where needed. Raking leaves onto a large tarp is another option. Once it’s full, the tarp can be taken to the curb where many towns will collect the leaves

seasonally. Otherwise, the tarp can be used as a funnel to put leaves into a gardening bag or another appropriate receptacle.

needs to be made of leaf clean-up.

Leaf blowers remain a fast option for cleaning up yards, but they require electricity or gas and can be noisy. Still, they are a popular choice for large landscapes or when quick work

One of the easiest ways to clean up leaves is to reach for a lawn mower rather than a rake. The mower will cut leaves down to smaller sizes, creating an effective mulch that can add nutrients back into the lawn. Davey, a lawn and landscape solutions service, says that mowed leaves also can be collected in a mower bag and added to garden beds or compost piles.

Leaves will fall in autumn, but luckily homeowners have various methods at their disposal to tame the mess.

Did you know?

The month of August is named in honor of Augustus Caesar and previously went by the name "Sextilis." Sextilis referred to the sixth month of the Gregorian calendar before January and February were added at the start of the year. Historians theorize that August has 31 days because Augustus wanted the month to have the same number of days as July, which was named in honor of his uncle, Gaius Julius Caesar. The traditional birthstone of August is peridot, and the gladiolus and poppy are the month's traditional flowers. August also is the last full month of summer.

For those who prefer manual raking, select a rake with tines that will not skewer the leaves in the process. Big rakes also can make faster work of gathering leaves into piles. The home improvement resource The Family Handyman advocates for the use of a lawn sweeper. This is a manual device that has a rotating

Lesser-known information about Halloween

H

alloween is a day of costumes, hijinks and an often unhealthy helping of sugary sweets. Many celebrants know that Halloween evolved from ancient Celtic festivals, such as Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the dawn of winter. Celts were no longer spending long days in the pastures, and so they gathered in their homes to tell stories and wait out the winter. When Christianity spread, Halloween became intertwined with a feast day dedicated to the saints and deceased loved ones. “All Hallows Even,” eventually got shortened to “Hallowe’en,” and then Halloween. Though certain parts of Halloween history are well-known, there are many additional interesting facts about this beloved holiday that are less widely known. The following are some lesser known Halloween tidbits, courtesy of the websites, The Thought & Expression Company and Random History, as well as “The Halloween Handbook” (Citadel Press) by Ed Morrow. • The first jack-o-lanterns were made from turnips and beets. Pumpkins were used after

www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

• Trick-or-treating may have originated with a European custom called “souling.” On All Soul’s Day, early Christians would go doorto-door begging for “soul cakes,” which were square pieces of bread with currants. The more cakes a person received, the more prayers he or she would promise to the dead relatives of the cake donors.

Halloween was brought to North America.

• The word “witch” is thought to come from the Olde English word “wicce,” meaning “wise woman.” Witches once were held in high regard.

• Pumpkins actually are a fruit, a type of squash that is a member of the gourd family. Its cousins include cucumbers, melons, and other squashes.

• Witches may have rubbed a sacred ointment made with a hallucinogenic herb onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting, they felt even giddier. Many witches rode on horseback, but those who were poor traveled on foot and carried a broom to launch themselves over streams. • One-quarter of all the candy sold each year is purchased around Halloween. Halloween candy sales in the United States average about $2 billion annually.

• Some people still celebrate the ancient Celtic customs of Samhain. Many followers of various pagan religions, such as the Druids and Wiccans, observe this day as a religious festival and a memorial

day for their deceased friends. It also is a night to practice various forms of divination.

• The owl is a popular Halloween symbol. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches. • The first-known mention of trickor-treating was found in print in 1927 in Blackie, Alberta, Canada. • Ireland is believed by many to be the birthplace of Halloween.

• Both Salem, Massachusetts, and Anoka, Minnesota, are the selfproclaimed Halloween capitals of the world. • Pumpkins are now carved and displayed as Halloween decorations. Orange is a color of strength and symbolic of the harvest. The largest pumpkin ever grown was more than 1,600 pounds. It was grown by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, RI.

Halloween is a mysterious time, born of various festivals, rituals and symbolism. Over several centuries, the celebration has evolved into a holiday enjoyed by millions, each in their own different ways.

Natalia K of Westbury: I love the crisp fall air, going outside with a cozy sweater on and going apple and pumpkin picking out east… and of course getting an apple cider donut and hot apple cider!

Jo-Anne O of West Islip: What I love about Long Island in autumn is the fresh smell of the new fallen leaves on the ground from the trees, the crisp air, the cool nights, the evenings spent with the family watching the fires in our fire pit and/or our fireplace with the crisp dead leaves that we’ve collected as a family from our yard while drinking hot cocoa. It’s a great time to experience the changing of the seasons and still be able to enjoy the outside with the family.

Dorrine L of Smithtown: I love autumn on Long Island because it is a very peaceful time of year! 7 uses for fallen leaves

B

y the time autumn hits full swing, many trees will have shed their leaves for the season, and the last vestiges of red, yellow and orange magic will have faded to brown. Raking, blowing and collecting leaves becomes the primary chores of lawn and yard maintenance, and presents most homeowners with large piles of gathered leaves to tend to. It is impossible to count just how many leaves fall to the ground each year, or just how many pounds of leaves get collected curbside, but the numbers are substantial. Cleaning up leaves is considerable work, but not all of those leaves need to be carted away. In fact, there are several different uses of leaves that can be beneficial.

1. Spread leaves as a protective mulch to cover tender perennials or root crops/bulbs in the ground. The leaves will form a natural insulating cover that keeps the soil and the plants within a bit warmer over winter. 2. Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf

mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil. 3. Brown leaves can be added to green materials in compost piles to improve the health of the compost being formed. According to the healthy living resource Care2, the ideal ratio is 75 percent brown to 25 percent green materials in compost. Turn compost piles regularly to aerate them. 4. Store dried, mulched leaves in a dry spot so they can be used in the spring as a weed barrier for spring plantings. They will keep weeds at bay and help retain soil moisture to ensure small sprouts have the resources to grow.

5. Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight.

SLR

6. Bag dried leaves and pack them tightly together in cold areas of the home, such as basements or garages. They can act as added insulation. Bags of leaves also can be placed around planting containers to protect them from frost.

7. Gather a few of the best-looking leaves and preserve them. Use an iron on a low setting and press leaves between two pieces of waxed paper until the waxed paper seals together. Or use clear contact paper to achieve the same effect. Fallen leaves can be used in many different ways throughout the year.

Living "green" on campus

C

ollege is full of challenges. While studying, socializing, joining clubs, and getting good grades are probably on college students’ priority lists, young people also can think about living green on campus. Data from Nielsen points to millennials as being an ecoconscious generation. Millennials are willing to pay extra for sustainable offerings, and they tend to stick to brands that have established a reputation for environmental stewardship.

Even though college students may have packed schedules, they can still manage to keep the planet in mind as they live and educate themselves. Here are just a few ways college students can live green in dorms and incorporate eco-friendly practices into their studies as well. • Live on campus. One green idea is to skip the commute to and from classes and reside right on campus in dormitories or nearby student housing. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, transportation is responsible for 13 percent

Chances are you can find people willing to give you or loan out chairs, a small table, desk, electronics, and more. Borrowing enables you to buy less.

• Take e-notes. Bring a tablet or laptop to class and take electronic notes. This cuts back on paper usage and will enable you to have all notes in a compact file.

of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Living close to the classroom can help reduce emissions.

• Recycle as much as you can. Whether it’s plastic, paper, aluminum, or books, put recyclable items in the proper receptacles. Find ways to lend or give away items that you may no longer need, such as last semester’s textbooks. Recycling cuts back on the size of landfills and lowers the demand for the production of new materials.

• Buy and dine locally. Choose sustainable, organic and locally produced items when shopping or dining out. This can include locally made furnishings and supplies, as well as farm-to-table restaurants.

• Walk or bike. Leave the car in its parking spot and walk or bike to nearby events. It’s good exercise and good for the planet as well. • Borrow dorm room items. Scout out items from family members or friends that can be used to equip a dorm room.

• Use LED lights. Illuminate your dorm room and work station with lamps that use LED lights, which burn significantly less energy and last much longer than incandescent bulbs. • Enroll in an environmentfocused class. Enroll in Environmental Science or a similar course that teaches you more about the impact industry and personal living has on the environment. Take what you know to educate others about what they can do to be more ecoconscious.

Going green on campus can have a profound impact on students and their futures.

Peak viewing planning guide

M

illions of people each year look forward to the magnificent colors on display in autumn. Fall offers irreplaceable views, whether you’re atop a mountain ridge or thick in the folds of a forest. In addition, the crackle of leaves underfoot and the earthy smell of the soil tempts the senses even more.

want to take out their prized camera equipment for leaf-peeping excursions. Also bring along a map or a GPS-enabled device so you can explore back roads and areas off the beaten path more readily. There are plenty of apps that can help with foliage-finding adventures, so a phone is a handy tool. When packing, also bring along hiking boots, comfortable layered clothing and any equipment you’d normally take for an afternoon in the great outdoors.

Some advance planning can help make fall foliage trips that much more enjoyable and awe-inspiring.

Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www. weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.

Pick your destination Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leafpeeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy

the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit. Pack the right gear While most people are not without a smartphone that can capture amazing high-resolution imagery, serious leaf photographers may

Interesting facts about fall

W

eather is often the first indicator that the seasons are changing. For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall.

For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two different names is just one of many interesting facts about fall. • A season by any other name … Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox. • The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall

www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

is known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round. However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear.

• Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of

nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried.

• Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than

1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895. They then compared birth and death information with those centenarians’ siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

s children head back to school, they and their parents have lots to do to be ready for the first days of school. Clothing and supplies may be top priorities, but families also should focus on safety as the first day of school draws close. The following are some key tips families can keep in mind to ensure a healthy and happy upcoming school year.

School bus safety The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that school buses are the safest way for children to travel to and from school. The majority of school bus-related injuries occur while students are boarding and getting off the bus. Over the last 10 years, the NHTSA says nearly two-thirds of schoolage pedestrians who were fatally injured by school buses or other vehicles were hurt after being struck while entering or exiting the bus. While at the bus stop, children must remember to stay at least five large steps away from the road and wait to board until the driver says so. When leaving the bus, students should make sure there is no oncoming traffic and wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing busy streets. While on the bus, observe the rules and stay seated at all times. Keep the center aisle clear of backpacks.

Walking/biking safety Students may walk or bike to school if the school permits. School tends to begin during the morning rush hour, so students must exercise extreme caution when walking or biking to school. Stick to sidewalks whenever possible when walking. Cyclists should follow the rules of the road, including riding in the same direction as traffic. Choose the safest route as a family and practice it before the first day of school, advises the security company ADT.

Backpack safety Choose an ergonomically designed backpack to enhance safety and comfort. Backpacks should weigh no more than 5 to 10 percent of the child's body weight, advises the National Safety Council. Rolling backpacks should be avoided since they are a tripping hazard. With a new school year on the horizon, students and their parents can discuss school safety so the year starts off on the right foot. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com

Seasonal Selections A sweet and savory Halloween treat

Save the tricks for another time; this Halloween is all about the treats. Halloween parties are par for the course, and spooktacular hosts and hostesses want to serve their guests something special. Enter a dessert hybrid that layers various flavors to create a masterpiece that simply works. This recipe for “Grilled Chocolate Chip Cookie Bacon S’mores,” courtesy of the National Pork Board and Tiffany Edwards of Le Crème de la Crumb, is the Frankenstein’s monster of the dessert world. You’d be hardpressed to find a person who can pass up the salty swagger of smoked bacon paired with the creamy richness of chocolate and the crunch and sweetness of a chocolate chip cookie. Top it with marshmallow and this Halloween treat is alive with flavor!

Grilled Chocolate Chip Cookie Bacon S’mores Yields 12 12 thick-cut slices bacon (hickory smoked, Applewood smoked or maple) 12 large marshmallows 12 2-inch squares chocolate good quality 12 skewers 12 tablespoons butter, softened 3⁄4 cup brown sugar 1⁄4 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla

1 egg plus 1 egg yolk 2 cups flour 1 3.4-ounce box instant French vanilla pudding mix, dry, not prepared 1 teaspoon baking soda 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Make the cookies: In a bowl, cream together butter, sugar and brown sugar for 1 to 2 minutes until light and very fluffy. Add vanilla, egg and egg yolk, and mix well. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, pudding mix, baking soda, and salt.

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and mix until incorporated and dough comes together. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover very tightly and chill for at least 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 350 F. Roll dough into balls (about 11⁄2 inch) and space 2 to 3 inches apart on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until lightly browned on top. Allow to cool 5 to 10 minutes on baking sheet before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. To grill the bacon: Heat a grill to medium-high heat. Thread bacon onto skewers in an S-shape. Place skewers directly on grill and cook 8 to 12 minutes, rotating as needed to ensure even cooking. Transfer to a plate, let cool and then remove bacon from skewers. Set aside. Meanwhile, roast the marshmallows: Roast marshmallows directly over the grill using skewers or roasting sticks until cooked to your preference. Assemble s’mores: Flip one cookie over so it’s upside down. Place a square of chocolate on top of the upside-down cookie, then top with grilled marshmallow, bacon and a right side-up second cookie. Serve immediately.

Cranberry-infused cocktail for autumn Besides the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” nothing says “autumn” more than tart cranberries. Cranberries are a major component of Thanksgiving feasts, turning up alongside and atop turkey as well as in quick breads and desserts.

Cranberries are loaded with health benefits, which include reducing the risk for ulcers and preventing gum disease. Also, just eight ounces of cranberry juice cocktail contains 137 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C.

Cranberries can even be used to craft great cocktails. Move over mulled ciders, this crisp “Cranberry Margarita” from The Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association makes a great autumninspired beverage. www.seasonsmagazineonline.com
