Dozens Of Rams Deliver Over 100 Toys To Children

Over 35 college lacrosse players traded their sticks for Santa hats to give children with intellectual and other developmental disabilities a Christmas to remember.

Amidst studying for finals and training in the off- season, the Farmingdale State College lacrosse team shopped for over 100 gifts, purchased them and wrapped them to put smiles on the faces of students at AHRC Suffolk’s Seiff Educare Center. “I’ve been doing it for a few years now and a lot of team members who graduate come back to do it” senior and team captain John McMahon said. Santa and Mrs. Claus

greeted the kids, who range in age from 3 to 21-years, and hand delivered a gift to each of them to tell them they had been a good boy or girl this year. Students also received lacrosse shirts with head coach Sean Chamberlain saying “it’s all for the kids.” Giving to others is something Coach Chamberlain learned as a child: “My mother always gave to charities and when she passed away I wanted to do something to carry on her spirit of generosity.”

Su Roesler, who is the Education Coordinator at the Educare Center says “anyone can drop off toys, but to see the joy in the players’ eyes as they spend

time going classroom to classroom, interacting with the students and learning about their unique abilities, is the most rewarding part.”

Toasting the new year with a sparkling wine can be traced back to French champagne producers.

Champagne, a sparkling wine from a specific region of France, was used in the baptism of the Frankish warrior Clovis, according to the Champagne Committee of France. Soon, champagne became a key part of religious events, coronations and soirees - as well as secular rituals that replaced formerly religious rituals, according to the book “When Champagne Became French” by Kolleen Guy. Champagne manufacturers eventually linked the bubbly to festive occasions with family, and New Year’s celebrations became another ideal time to pop the cork on a bottle.

Who doesn’t love to see more green at the end of the year? While year-end bonuses are nice, they can be quiet costly if that extra money bumps you into a higher tax bracket. To avoid this happening, try having your bonus deferred until January 2020.

5. Install solar panels. Did you know that you can score a tax break by simply being environmentally conscious? Before 2019 wraps up, consider installing solar panels or other energy-efficient features to earn a tax credit of up to 30 percent of the installment cost. This may be the last year to score this rate as the 30 percent rate is set to drop in 2020 and may be phased out completely by 2022 for residential customers.

East Islip High School students enjoyed holiday traditions at local landmark Brookwood Hall during the first week of December, connecting to the community and setting an ideal seasonal mood.

The high school’s Interact Club participated in the Brookwood Hall Restoration Committee and Islip Arts Council’s sixth annual Festival of Trees on Dec. 4. Holiday trees were purchased by the Rotary Club and

Albrecht, Bruno & O’Shea Funeral Home for students to decorate alongside more than 50 other local community groups and service organizations.

Proceeds will benefit the Islip Arts Council, which has its headquarters at the mansion.

“This event gives students the opportunity to participate in a fun and meaningful service project that is a tradition in the East Islip community,” said club adviser Lisa Rapiejko.
