Wreaths Across America Announces Major Donation From Jersey Mike’s Subs And Issues Challenge To The Public

Successful Season Of Competition For Mock Trial Team

East Islip High School’s mock trial team had a busy and successful fall season, including participating in two major competitions.

National nonprofit Wreaths Across America (WAA) is proud to announce that Jersey Mike’s Subs, a fast-casual sub sandwich franchise with more than 2,300 locations nationwide, has made a $300,000 donation and issued a challenge to help raise funds to sponsor veterans’ wreaths for placement at Arlington National Cemetery.

Through this generous donation, Jersey Mike’s has once again stepped up to help WAA reach its goal of placing a live balsam remembrance wreath at the headstone of every one of the nation’s veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Starting Dec. 1, through Wed., Dec. 14, 2022, every $15 wreath sponsorship made at www. wreathsacrossamerica. org/JerseyMikes will be matched by the company, up to $300,000.

Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s has supported WAA’s mission with contributions totaling more than $3 million dollars. In October, eight team members competed in the Empire Eclipse tournament, an international online competition that comprised teams from seven different countries. The case was a criminal matter in which the federal government charged the defendant with computer hacking and creating a danger to the public by sending a false incoming missile alert. East Islip competed against schools

from South Korea, California, Oregon and Tennessee, and went 2-2 over four rounds of intense competition. Senior Jacob Franchi was recognized with an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Attorney.

In November, 17 of East Islip’s mock trial students traveled to Harvard University for the annual Harvard Mock Trial Association Angela R Mathew High School Seminars. The students attended lectures and worked one-on-one with reigning national champion Harvard Mock Trial members to improve their trial advocacy skills.

The fact pattern was a negligence tort in which the plaintiff was suing a small plane company for the crash that killed her husband. East Islip’s students worked on both the plaintiff and defense sides of the case and competed in trial rounds against schools from Florida and Pennsylvania. Two students were recognized with awards for their performances: junior Julia Fink earned an Outstanding Attorney designation and freshman Nicholas Cusumano was named an Outstanding Witness.

Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-proﬁt organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have ﬁve service areas:

Children & Youth: Their Children & Youth services work deeply with children who are victims of child abuse and neglect or who are involved in the foster care system or child trafﬁcking. They provide supervised visitation between noncustodial parents and their children, promote child passenger safety and offer mentors for at-risk youth.

Family & Community: EAC Network’s Family and Community programs help individuals pay bills, resolve family and business conﬂicts and navigate through obstacles that hinder selfsufﬁciency.

Senior & Nutrition Services: EAC Network is a provider of Meals on Wheels. They act as guardians for seniors, as well as mentally and/or physically incapacitated individuals, who are unable to manage aspects of daily life on their own. Their senior centers provide warm meals, exercise and social interaction to local seniors. They also offer technology classes as well as trained companions to relieve caregivers.

Vocational Services: Their Vocational Services offer a variety of programs that provide participants with skills to obtain and retain employment, particularly with at-risk populations.

Behavioral Health & Criminal Justice Services: They offer Behavioral Health programs that work in tandem with the criminal justice system to help

individuals suffering from mental health and/ or substance abuse issues obtain treatment. They also offer programs for Anger Management, Community Service and educational intervention for domestic violence offenders, and more.

Within those five areas of service, they run a total of 103 programs and they serve over 50,000 people a year with offices in all five boroughs, Suffolk County, Nassau County and Rockland County!
