The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

John Theissen Children’s Foundation is Celebrating Their

28th

Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

eventbrite.com/jtcf. Additionally, you can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. You can donate a toy to their Annual Toy & Fund Holiday Drive, going on now through December 22nd , (please visit www. jtcf.org for dropoff locations) and you can donate monetarily at www. jtcf.org or by mailing a check to John Theissen Children’s Foundation, 1881 Wantagh Avenue, Wantagh, NY 11793 to support their mission. You can also volunteer by organizing your own toy drive, helping at fundraising events or distributing flyers. Lastly, this holiday season you can provide a child with a specific item that he/she requested. If you wish to do this, please contact John at John@JTCF.org. This holiday season and always, let us count our blessings, give to those in need and make a difference in the world. For more information about this Foundation, please call 516.679.5098 or email John@JTCF. org.

Transplant Recipient Meets Donor’s Daughter

AMERICAN LEGION VETS VISIT SHERWOOD - Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School hosted three local veterans from American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 on Nov. 13. It was a special moment at Long Island MacArthur Airport Friday, when a heart transplant recipient met the donor’s daughter for the first time. Long Island resident Raymond Miehl, 62, met Ashley Brayton of Ohio, whose father’s heart now beats in his chest, after she exited the gate from her Southwest Airlines flight. Ashely’s father, Ronnie Davis died on March 1, 2016 at the age of 46. On March 3, 2016 Miehl received his heart. The families

first contacted each two years ago, and have been planning this meeting for more than a year. “I say you can’t take your organs to heaven, so you might as well give somebody a fighting chance that might not otherwise have one,” said Brayton. Miehl expressed his gratitude and vowed to honor her father’s memory by taking care of his health. “We were very grateful and thankful, that there’s somebody still going with her father, that she knows that her father

is still going and that he’s living still. And I’m taking care of it as much as I can and as good as I can,” said Miehl. “I would definitely ask people to donate. My wife is a donor, my daughter’s a donor. I don’t know if I could be, but if I could, I would definitely be a donor. And I think that people would definitely benefit from other people being donors,” he added. The families plan to maintain contact.

on the varsity basketball team for three years as well as the varsity soccer team for all four years, earning All-Division and All-County honors in the latter sport. Fusco serves as president of the school’s Girls Leaders Club and vice president of the Foreign Language National Honor Society, and is a member of its National Honor Society, Yearbook Club and symphony orchestra. Levy, who plays attack, will attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She is undecided on a major. A lacrosse player since prekindergarten, Levy has been on the varsity team all four years of high school, earning All-County honors twice as well as All-County honorable mention. She also played for three years on EI’s varsity field hockey team, earning AllCounty honors twice as well as All-Division and All-Tournament honors; on the school’s basketball team for one year; and for the Legacy travel lacrosse team since seventh grade.

Levy is a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Foreign Language National Honor Society, Girls Leaders Club and Yearbook Club. Schlesinger, a goalie, signed with Rollins University in Winter Park, Florida, where she plans to study pre-med and major in biology. A four-year varsity lacrosse starter, she earned All-Division honors. As an athlete, Schlesinger earned Scholar-Athlete and High Minds in Motion awards and was also a member of both the East Islip varsity swim team and Legacy lacrosse travel team since seventh grade. She is a member of the school’s SADD club and Key Club. “It has been an incredible experience watching this group develop as athletes,” said Steven Levy, East Islip’s varsity girls head coach. “I have had the pleasure of being in the front row throughout their careers. They are a special group of athletes, students and members of our community.”

Artwork from more than three dozen East Islip High School students from photography, electronic illustration and studio in art classes was recently showcased at the East Islip Public Library. The event was curated by National Art Honor Society student Michael Kilbourne. Dr. Deborah Smith, principal of the district’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School, initiated the partnership with the library and attended the opening along with John Dolan, the

district’s superintendent of schools; Assistant Superintendent Paul Manzo, the assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel; and Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. “It was my first time being shown in a gallery and it was nice to have my family there,” said student Steven Brown. “This is a huge step for me and my future.” “It was an honor to be chosen, and it was exciting

to see the great work other students contributed to the show,” said student Thomas Tricoukes. “It was our first year at the library gallery and it was a great night of beautiful artwork for our students and their families,” said teacher Joy Taylor. “The library has such a beautiful space and it was such a wonderful opportunity to showcase student artwork,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “They are all so talented.”

Free Marriage Licenses For Active Military The Islip Town Board is proud to have recently approved a resolution to waive the Town fee for a marriage license, when either party applying is an active duty member of the US Armed Forces. Marriage licenses are $40. In August, 2019, New York State waived its portion of $22.50. The Islip Town Board followed suit, voting unanimously

at the October Town Board meeting to waive the remaining $17.50. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, along with members of the Town Board, unanimously approved the resolution at the meeting. Recent changes to New York State’s Domestic Relations Law now allows for Townships to waive their portion of the fee.

“In the Town of Islip, active members of the military can now obtain a marriage license entirely for FREE,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This is a small way of showing our appreciation to our servicemen and women, who give of themselves each and every day to ensure our freedom,” added Supervisor Carpenter.

Bringing Families Together Around The World her family and with a heavy heart. With the help of the Red Cross, Lydia located her daughter and sent her a message through the Restoring Family Links (RFL) program. Odette responded to her mom— she was indeed alive. “I don’t know how the Red Cross managed to connect me with someone who I thought was dead. There was no other way for me to talk to her. There was no

After living in Tucson, Arizona, for some time, he connected with the Red Cross RFL program to open up a search for his father to help give him peace of mind. After months of searching, Fidele finally received the welcome message: His father was

Turnout was immense for East Islip High School’s college fair, with more than 280 parents and students in attendance to talk to representatives of over 100 colleges and military service branches.

The event also featured NCAA and financial aid college presentations to assist families in making informed decisions about students’ future educational plans. “It was a very community-

oriented night, and we received a lot of excellent feedback from the parents,” said Jason Stanton, the district’s new guidance director.

Allergy And Dirty Ducts (NAPSI)—Allergies are nothing to sneeze at but you can make your home more comfortable for people who have allergies and improve your indoor air quality—by cleaning in an often forgotten place. Indoor air quality can

be a big concern for many families. After all, in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust— including dangerous chemicals and other pollutants—is created annually through everyday living. These contaminants

L’ETOILE APPOINTED DANCE INSTRUCTOR - Dancer and educator Natalie L’Etoile of East Islip has joined the faculty at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts as a dance instructor.

She intends to combine her expertise in dance, choreography, fitness, nutrition and yoga to help build enrollment in what she sees as “a wellestablished, strong dance program” at LIHSA. Ms. L’Etoile’s goal as a teacher is to give her students every opportunity to grow and succeed, not only as dancers, but as wellrounded individuals. “The more they study their art, the more experience they will get. The more range they have as performers, the more versatile they will be when it comes time to choose a career. The more they diversify themselves, the more options they will have professionally.” “This feels like coming home,” Ms. L’Etoile said of her new position on the LIHSA dance faculty. “This school is very welcoming; there’s a family feel at LIHSA. I’m thrilled to be here.”

high school students from IAC. “A lot of our students don’t have siblings at home,” said David Rosman, teacher of Carpentry at IAC. “This gives them an opportunity to provide mentorship to someone that they could see as a younger brother or sister. It’s a way for them to give back, and see how much more there is outside of high school.”

Professionally trained dancer and educator Natalie L’Etoile of East Islip has been appointed dance instructor at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts. She brings more than 20 years of experience to LIHSA’s dance department faculty. Ms. L’Etoile began her career in Anchorage, where she served as dance instructor, company dancer and choreographer for the Alaska Dance Theatre, as well as an adjunct professor of modern dance at the University of Alaska. From there, she brought her teaching skills to the New York City School system. She served as a dance teaching-artist for the Learning through Expanded Arts Program (LEAP), and taught physical education at the Middle School for Gifted and Talented students. Ms. L’Etoile holds a bachelor’s degree in modern dance from the

High school students from Islip Academic Center walked into the cafeteria at Tecumseh Elementary School, bearing 20 birdhouses they made for the grade school students. The two groups of students came together and painted the birdhouses so they could be brought home. Islip Academic Center (IAC) and Tecumseh Elementary School (TES) are both Eastern Suffolk BOCES schools. IAC provides support and services to high school aged students with special needs, and TES provides special education series to students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The students at IAC built and painted the birdhouses with white primer during their woodshop class. When they visited the students at TES, they brought colorful paint, stickers, glitter, glue, and other art supplies so the grade school students could decorate the birdhouses as they saw fit. TRAINING FOCUSES ON LEADERSHIP SKILLS - Former NYC Transit Chief, Joseph Fox, conducted a two-day training exercise with Town of Islip Public Safety officials this week. The topic, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” focuses on building and sustaining positive relationships by facilitating a better understanding of a person’s role in various personal and professional relationships. The course is based on Stephen R. Covey’s book by the same name published in 1989, which has sold more than 24 million copies, and remains as relevant today as it did then. The 7 Habits are applicable to all people in their personal and professional lives, according to the author. “The Town of Islip strives to move the needle in employee growth and development,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “This course is one of many we’ve hosted by Former Chief Fox, and each and every one has been enlightening and well-received by our departments,” she added.
