The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.

United States Army National Guard

The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty.

Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations.

The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary.

The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief.

The DOD controls each military branch, except for the Coast Guard, which is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.

This year, organizers set their sites on raising $1 million for the almost 100 registered local nonprofit organizations that assist fellow Long Islanders. The virtual event was hosted at oneislandgiving.org.

This event was made possible through the bipartisan support of Suffolk County Legislators Kara Hahn, Leslie Kennedy and Susan Berland, who sponsored legislation last month to mark One Island Giving Day and illuminate the H. Lee Dennison Building to remind all county residents to support this initiative.

When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge.

I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry.

When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers.

Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain.

It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview.

My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there.

The ball was starting to roll.

After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position.

For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again.

Time went by (five years to be exact), when I had an epiphany.

Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again.

Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own.

My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”?

If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

Lee Dennison Building in blue during a ceremony yesterday afternoon to mark the single day, online fundraiser to benefit local nonprofit organizations that support the people who live, work and study in our communities.

This is the second annual “One Island Giving Day” and is a legacy of the Amy and Horace Hagedorn Foundation that supported numerous Long Island nonprofits until it closed last year.

In 2017, the effort raised over $325,000 to benefit more than 100 nonprofits that serve Nassau and Suffolk residents, with “One Island Giving Day” offering local nonprofits the unique opportunity to be supported by their neighbors across Long

WFTK Broadcasting Studio At the East Islip Board of Education meeting on Oct. 9, the district honored an esteemed local organization, the For the Kids Foundation, for its $40,000 donation to fund East Islip High School’s new WFTK broadcasting studio.

The school’s old studio debuted in 1989 and has been running for the last eight years under the guidance of teacher James

Connell. The upgraded facility, including new cameras and electronics, will now be home to a modern state of the art video production studio capable of broadcasting live video over the internet.

It is scheduled to start running in December, with the broadcasting of live events commencing by next June.

Red Ribbon Week

At Islip’s Wing Elementary School, Red Ribbon Week was celebrated this year with the theme “Thinking Is My Super Power.” Throughout the week, students participated in activities

that encouraged them to think about making good choices and what makes them “super,” including tying red ribbons to the school fence to spell out the word “THINK.” “We wanted to show

everyone at the school and in our community that Wing kids always ‘think’ about making good choices,” said school social worker Allison Siegel.

Suffolk and Nassau Counties have a breast cancer incidence rate approximately thirteen to eighteen percent higher than the statewide average.

Thankfully, patients struggling financially can turn to the NY Cancer Foundation (NYCF) for much needed support.

The NY Cancer Foundation has been awarding grants to qualifying patients undergoing cancer treatment since 2016.

Their goal is to relieve

some of the financial burden that patients face, so they can focus on their treatment and healing.

Given the number of cancer patients in need, funds can be limited.

Owner & Founder of Great South Bay Brewery, Rick Sobotka, saw the need to help fellow Long Islanders struggling with cancer, and created a limited edition, Guava infused IPA (India Pale Ale), called Pretty In Pink.

Just in time for Breast Cancer Awareness Month,

Rick and his team poured their heart and soul into this pink brew with the hope that every last sip will benefit fellow Long Islanders.

Great South Bay Brewery donated the proceeds from each can purchased to the NY Cancer Foundation.

Representatives from the NY Cancer Foundation gathered at the brewery on Friday, October 19th to receive this donation in a check for $7,500.

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students.

Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom.

By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books!

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material.

Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help!

Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location.

You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate.

Each recipient of assistance is assessed for eligibility and the potential need for ongoing social services with deliveries made on a biweekly basis.

Additionally, the program does not utilize a waiting list and there is no charge to any of the individuals that are assisted.

A unique aspect of the program is that it wholly undertaken by dedicated volunteers who both process and deliver orders.

These selfless men and women also take the time to cultivate relationships and provide companionship to homebound individuals.

Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) announced that he has secured a state grant to assist Long Island Cares continue its ability to help Long Islanders in need. The funding secured

by Senator Flanagan will help offset the cost of the purchase of a new mobile pantry vehicle that will be used to reach homebound individuals in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

The new vehicle will enable Long Island’s Regional Food Bank to expand home delivery of items to high-risk residents in need, including senior citizens, disabled veterans, and persons diagnosed with debilitating medical conditions that make it impossible for them to travel to access their local food pantry. Through this service, the not-for-profit delivers nonperishable food, personal care products, household supplies and pet food.

The program was launched in 2009 and to date has distributed approximately 250,000 pounds of items. In 2017
