Breast Cancer Hotline Volunteers Sought

4-Session Training In November

Breast cancer survivors can help others coping with breast cancer by becoming volunteers with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The four-day training program will take place on consecutive Tuesdays in November (November 1, 8, 15 and 22) from 10 am to 1 pm on zoom. Attendance at all four sessions is necessary. This in-depth training includes presentations

by nurse navigators and social workers on basic breast cancer education, active listening skills, and tips on engaging the community.

Those who complete the training will have opportunities to provide support and guidance on the hotline; attend community outreach events to support underserved communities; deliver educational presentations and speaking engagements;

assist with local and national press and media; and help with fundraising efforts.

The Girl Scouts Of Suffolk County’s Annual Holiday Lightshow Expands Its Annual Celebrations

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and County Executive Steve Bellone are excited to announce the Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be returning to Smith Point County Park in Shirley for the 19th consecutive year. This year, the drive-thru event which features more than a mile of illuminated holidaythemed displays, will take place from November 26th to December 30th. In addition to the annual drive-thru holiday attraction, new to this year’s event, GSSC will also create an incredible walk-through Enchanted Forest and Holiday Village featuring 200ft light displays, photos with Santa, a picnic area for s’mores, music, and games at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. Along with being a favorite holiday attraction among families from throughout Long Island, the seasonal event serves as an important fundraiser for Girl Scouts of Suffolk County to help expand the access girls throughout Suffolk County have to the empowering Girl Scout experience.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s annual holiday light show is a drivethrough show along a 1.5mile trail at Smith Point County Park Campgrounds filled with dazzling holiday light displays, created by our Girl Scouts, Staff, and members of our communities throughout Suffolk County. The holiday event features more than 100 fun artistic, holiday-themed displays. This year, the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have added 5 exhibits that were conceptualized by local, award-winning Girl Scouts.

“I am so excited to welcome back the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Holiday Light Show for the 19th year in a row,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “This year’s show is expected to be even bigger and better with multiple exciting new holiday attractions. Not only is this a fun family tradition, it also serves as a critical fundraising event to ensure girls throughout the county are able to reach their full potential.”

The Girl Scout Holiday Light Show will be open daily from November 26th to December 30th, excluding December 24th and 25th, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The Enchanted Forest will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 5 pm to 9 pm from November 26th

to December 18th and will run from December 26th to December 30th.

Since outgrowing its space at Camp Edey in Bayport, in 2016, the fundraising event has been held at Smith Point County Park. The light displays are assembled and built-in part, by GSSC staff and dedicated volunteers from PSEG Long Island, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1049 and Local 25, and the Long Island Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. Proceeds from the Holiday Light Show and Enchanted Forest benefit girl leadership programs as well as provide financial assistance for girls to join Girl Scouts and attend our summer camp program.

Healthy Snacks For Trick-Or-Treaters

Halloween is a festive day for children and adults alike. However, the abundance of candy and chocolate offered on and around Halloween can compromise diets designed to keep people healthy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity prevalence in the United States was 20.7 percent among children between the ages of six and 11 and 22.2 percent among 12- to 19-year-olds from 2017 to 2020. That’s a significant concern for parents, even during a time of year when candy and other sugary foods take center stage.

Everyone can do their part to keep kids on a healthy track this Halloween by offering more nutritious fare to trick-or-treaters. While homemade treats used to reign supreme, concerns about contamination and/ or food allergies have convinced most people to offer pre-packaged items. Here are some ideas.

• Fruit juice boxes that are 100 percent juice

• Sugar-free gum

• Fruit cups with fruit juice rather than light or heavy syrups

• Packaged sliced apples

• Bags of air-popped popcorn (light or free of

butter)

• Bags of baked chips or pretzels

• Whole grain granola bars or trail mixes

• Boxes of raisins or dried cranberries

• Snack packs featuring crackers or sliced vegetables and dips, like hummus

Non-food giveaways can make trick-or-treaters smile as well. Individuals can find options that fit their budgets. Stores or online retailers that sell party favors or trinkets or stores with wholesale or bulk options may provide the best bang for your

buck.

• Fidget toys

• Spooky accessories, like vampire teeth or spider rings

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Helen Keller Services, located in Port Washington, recently held its 3rd annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) event, celebrating The US Department of Labor’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”, recognizing the vital role people with disabilities play in making the nation’s workforce diverse and inclusive.

“Accessibility to job opportunities affects everyone and should be integral to hiring practices, and not just an afterthought,” said Joseph Melillo, National Business & Employment Relations Specialist at Helen Keller Services. “With equal access, people who are blind, have low vision, or are DeafBlind can unlock their inner ability.”

Highlights of the event included a keynote address from Kathy West-Evans, Director of Business Relations, Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation (CSAVR)/ National Employment Team (NET), and experts who spoke about disability inclusion, use of technology and the talents of the DeafBlind community in the workplace.

As a member of the League of Women Voters (LWV), a 102 year old nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, this is my “busy season.” With my LWV colleagues, all volunteers, I speak to groups, answer countless questions, organize and moderate debates, and write articles; all as outreach during election season. Additionally, we encourage all citizens to vote responsibly in every election in which they are eligible, whether that be fire districts, libraries, school districts, local, state or federal. Your vote is your voice and I urge you to use it this Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th. Below is some significant information to keep in mind:

• Be sure you are registered to vote prior to heading to the polls.

• Because of redistricting, mandated by the US Constitution after the (2020) census, some of your district numbers may have changed! You can find your polling place easily on the NYS Board of Elections (BOE) website at www.voterlookup. elections.ny.gov. If you don’t have access to the internet, go to your local public library, where you can find assistance to get on one of their computers. Your information is private.

• You may have applied for an absentee ballot. If you plan to vote this way, the same website allows you to track your ballot to be sure it’s been received and will be counted by your county’s BOE. With a new tracking system now in place, if you have applied for an absentee ballot, but you decide you’d rather vote in person, you will not be able to cast your vote in a machine during early voting or on Election Day. Instead, you’ll be given an “affidavit ballot” and the BOE will check your records

to confirm whether or not your absentee ballot was received. This is to ensure no one’s vote is counted twice.

• This year you’ll be voting for your local member of the House of Representatives, one US Senator, NYS Governor and Lt. Governor and your local member of the NYS Senate and NYS Assembly. In Suffolk County, you’ll also vote for County Comptroller and County Clerk. There may be some local races on the ballot too.

• There is a NYS Environmental Bond proposition on the back of your ballot. If approved, this would allow the NYS Comptroller to issue and sell $4.2million in bonds to be used to fund environmental protection, natural restoration, resiliency, and clean energy projects. This is not a tax, investors buy NYS bonds.

• Suffolk County also has a countywide proposition clarifying the wording of the term limits law and four Suffolk townships have local propositions too. Nassau does not have a county proposition on this year’s ballot.

Please plan ahead; learn about the candidates and know what’s on your ballot. You can visit www.vote411. org, enter your address (no need for your name or personal info) and you will see the offices, candidates, and propositions that will be on the ballot. All candidates were sent questions and given the opportunity to answer them on the site; sometimes candidates refuse to respond, this is indicated. No one ever should be too busy, too disinterested or even too frustrated to vote. Your vote is your hard-earned right, but also your obligation as an American citizen.

2022 Fred Golofaro Memorial South Shore Fishing Classic

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the 2022 Fred Golofaro Memorial South Shore Classic Fishing Tournament will be held from 12noon Friday, October 28 to 12noon Sunday, October 30, 2022.

All Bluefish & Striped Bass must be hooked and landed from the beach, surf, jetty, bank, or pier in the waters between the Jones Beach West End and the east jetty of the Moriches Inlet. The qualifying sizes are: Bluefish – 5 pounds and Striped Bass 28 inches to 35 inches. Captree Fuel, Bait & Tackle at Captree State Park is the official weigh-in station and will be open from 6am to 10pm Friday and Saturday and 6am to 12noon on Sunday. All fish must be weighed and recorded by 12noon on Sunday, October 30. The 1st place anglers in the largest Striped Bass and Bluefish

categories will be awarded $750 each. In the case of a tie, the earliest recorded fish takes precedence. One prize awarded per person, per species.

The registration fee is $20 per person and can be done by mail or in person. Applications can be found at www.parks.ny.gov on the Long Island Region page, LI State Parks Recreation page on Facebook, in The Fisherman Magazine and at Long Island State Parks. Mail in registration is strongly recommended and will be accepted until Friday, October 21. In person registration will be open until 9 a.m. Saturday, October 29 at Captree Fuel, Bait & Tackle located within Captree State Park.

On Sunday, October 30 at 12noon in place of an award ceremony, the first 100 registered participants will receive a free set of Tsunami lures which will be distributed by curbside pick-

up in the Captree parking lot. Participants must remain in their vehicles, wear a mask and show their permit to receive the giveaway.

The tournament is sponsored by New York State Parks - Long Island Region, the Natural Heritage Trust, The Fisherman Magazine, Captree Fuel, Bait &Tackle. This year’s corporate contributor is Tsunami. For additional information, please contact the Recreation Department at 631-321-3510.

The Mags & Munchies program is a financial literacy program where Girl Scouts sell various products, including magazines, and delicious nuts,

snacks, and chocolates. The program presents Girl Scouts with an opportunity to give back to their communities— while providing girls with entrepreneurial, goal-setting, and decision-making skills in preparation for the start of the Girl Scout cookie season.

Islip High School Students Achieve High Music Honors

Nine superb studentmusicians from Islip High School were recently selected to perform in honors music ensembles across New York State.

Madelynn Lange was chosen as a member of the New York State School Music Association’s AllState Mixed Chorus, while Lucas Bohr and Skylar Greene were chosen as alternates for the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Mixed Chorus, respectively.

This year’s All-State ensembles are scheduled to perform on Dec. 3 and 4 at the Eastman Theater in Rochester.

In addition, Ella Beiser, Lucas Bohr, Madelynn Lang, Lianna Rivera and Ma’Raya Stewart were chosen for the SCMEA All-County Vocal Jazz

Ensemble. They will perform on Nov. 5 at East Islip High School.

Ella Beiser, Maggie Frazer, Skylar Greene, Madelynn Lang, Daniel Rubinson, Ma’Raya Stewart and Daniel Turk were also chosen for the NYSCAME All-County Mixed Chorus. They will perform at Half Hollow Hills High School East on Nov. 18.

Student-musicians in the All-State Festival are selected based on their performance in the NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival, while All-County participants went through an audition and recommendation process last spring. These students were selected to participate from thousands of applicants throughout Suffolk County and across

New York State.

Students prepare for the festivals with the assistance of their school music teachers and then participate in a series of rehearsals that conclude with a public concert. The students will have the opportunity to work and perform under the leadership of highly skilled guest conductors from higher education and the professional music communities alongside other high school students of equally high caliber.

“This is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the hard work of our students and teachers in Islip,” Director of Fine and Performing Arts Michael Hershkowitz said.

On Sunday, November 6th, “Long Island Cars” will present the “Best Cars on Long Island” Car Show & Swap Meet at LICHA at Bald Hill in Farmingville.

Classic and collectible automobiles including street rods, muscle cars, antiques, exotics and imports compete in this judged event with trophies awarded in over fifty classes from stock to modified.

Once again, this final show of the season will include “Long Island Cars” signature Swap Meet, where vendors will be
