Historical Society’s 31st Marker In The Hamlet

East Islip Is First Long Island High School To Offer Stony Brook ACE Credits In Art

Beginning with the 20232024 school year, East Islip High School will be the first Long Island school to offer college credit to art students through Stony Brook University’s Accelerated College Education program. The ACE program offers academically talented high school students the convenience of enrolling in Stony Brook University courses taught in their high school, which can be later applied as credits toward a degree at Stony Brook or transferred to another college or university.

The idea began in 2021, after East Islip Director of Art and Music Dr. Rob Wottawa formed a relationship with SBU ACE Program coordinators through his work with East Islip’s World Language

Department. During the 2022-2023 school year, the art department reviewed its art course curriculums to determine which courses aligned with SBU courses and began developing a syllabus for Photography I and Digital Imaging and Design I. After a year of working alongside with SBU, East Islip was approved to offer college credit to its art students.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to pursue my goals in graphic design and advertising and earn college credit here at East Islip High School before I graduate,” National Art Honor Society president Sophie Jensen said.

“I am excited that we are the first school district on Long Island to offer college credits for our art department,” art teacher Heather Toomey said. “It

is an amazing opportunity that Stony Brook offers college-level curriculum while students are still in high school, and I have the honor of teaching it. I look forward for this wonderful partnership and hope it continues to grow. I’d also like to thank Dr. Wottawa for assisting on this endeavor and being instrumental with his support and dedication.”

Public Relations Professionals of Long Island (PRPLI) will host an online professional development workshop, “AI Tools for PR Pros,” on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 12:00pm via Zoom. LEGO Girls Take On Innovation Challenge

The LEGO Girls, East Islip’s FIRST Lego League competition team consisting of John F. Kennedy Elementary School fifthgraders Jayne Elliott, Sonali Kamath and Antonia Rezza, started their season by researching this year’s FIRST Innovation Challenge of showcasing how best to

create an immersive report on a topic that they are passionate about. The East Islip trio chose to explore how museums and theaters work cohesively to tell a grand story.

Their project research began with a trip to the Oakdale Performing Arts Center to learn from the

cast and crew of “Into the Woods.” The team met with several members of the cast and crew, including the stage manager and music and set directors, and even had the opportunity to go behind the scenes to tour the changing room and costume area and view the set itself while it was being built.

Island impacted by mental illness, struggling with mental health, and those affected by a substance use disorder…and it does not discriminate, it can affect anyone, regardless of economic or social status,” said Islip Supervisor, Angie Carpenter.

“For the last 4 years,

Islip community members, business owners and community partners have been pivotal in the success of Islip Goes Purple, which is one way we can come together as a community,” said Supervisor Carpenter. The effort has grown throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties, with

Brookhaven, Babylon and Huntington Townships following the Town of Islip and lighting their communities purple, along with Massapequa Park in the Town of Oyster Bay.

Islip Buccaneers Win 2023 Suffolk Senior Championship

On August 24, 2023, at the Brookhaven Diamond in the Pines Ballpark in Coram, NY the Islip Bucs defeated the Brookhaven Sledgehammers in a four-game sweep of the divisional playoffs. The Bucs rebounded from a tough first year in the senior league in 2022 going 0 -50 in their first year of existence. In 2022 the majority of the players on the team had not played competitive softball in almost 20 years. They suffered through injuries and a tough losing season. However, manager Bob Patch had the foresight that with some hard work and the addition of a few new players, the team would be more successful and could turn things around in 2023. The 2023 season started with some tough practices in the cold rainy spring months of March and April but the Bucs were ready for a more successful season. The Bucs went 29-19 during the regular season finishing in 2nd place and won four straight games in the playoffs to secure the division title. Team members

Lung Association Launches First LUNG FORCE Walk

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths on Long Island –and throughout the U.S. In an effort to end lung cancer, the American Lung Association is launching its first ever LUNG FORCE Walk Long Island at Eisenhower Park on October 7, 2023

LUNG FORCE initiative unites those impacted by lung cancer and their caregivers to stand together against lung

cancer. LUNG FORCE Walks happen all around the county as celebratory and welcoming events that provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness. The New York City Walk, which took place in May, saw more than 1,000 people participate, raising over $275,000.
